What was the price of the original iPhone and how did it compare to the popular phones of the day?

The original iPhone was $500-$600 + 2yr contract, then later $400 + 2yr contract. This was in an era when almost all phones were tied to 2yr contracts, and were partially subsidized by contract. So, the price felt high at the time because it was both the contract and a high price. (and most people's sense of getting a new phone being "oh, my contract is up, I can get a new phone!")

For comparison, from the 3G to very recently, Apple usually advertised the price of the iPhone as it's subsidized price, so you'd usually see $200 as the starting price for a base-model new phone. But even then, from one standpoint, the iPhone 2G started at $500 + contract, and the 3G started at $200 + contract.

What is with all these internet videos saying "thee" in place of "the" even when the following word does not begin with a vowel?

It doesn't sound as sophisticated as they might think.

Probably because it is the first event at the Steve Jobs Theater. Using the emphatic "the." I really don't think they are trying to sound sophisticated.

Very excited for this event. Hoping for a hair raising intro video tribute to SJ. There better be!

I'm excited for the keynote, here's hoping to a great phone with no sucky Touch ID issue, and a new ATV. My hope is to get them both, depending on Canadian pricing.

I'm sorry but I chuckle at that "Thumb" every time.

Is it just me or is the iPhone 8 the ugliest iPhone that Apple is going to produce? This camera sticking out for the 3rd time on an iPhone is absurd. Get this thing flush would you!?!?

I think getting the real deal in your hand is going to feel and look like a jewel.

I'm mainly interested in the Apple TV, skipped last version when it didn't have 4K so there will be lots of new things to discover...

Question is: what's been the trend on timing between announcement to shipping day for apple TVs? Are they generally available soon after?

Model 1 was released a few months after it was announced
Models 2, 3 and 3 Rev A were all released the same day as they were announced
Model 4 was released a month after it was announced

So it will probably be released the same day or in October. I'm thinking / hoping it to be released on the same day so it doesn't conflict with the iPhone release.

Does a phone really need to have a glass back for wireless inductive charging?

I believe there are other materials that would work, but glass provides solid support for this while maintaining the premium look and feel as well as allowing for better wireless signal for your phone provider. It's possible that a high quality plastic would provide nearly all the same benefits as well, but it might lose out on that premium look and would likely feel out of place on a new product like this. The quality and strength of the glasses used these days is much different from the iPhone 4 days... I wouldn't be surprised if Apple actually brings out comparisons in the presentation to show off the strength of the material used to get in front of concerns about a repeat of "glassgate".

This will be an expensive year... New iPhone X, new Apple Watch (or two), new Apple TV, a minimum of 3 HomePods and if there's a great black friday deal on iPad Pros, I'll probably grab one of those too.

I just hope Apple can meet demand relatively quickly.

Soon we will know if the 'notch' will look seamless or frowny...

(Ok, yes part of me just wanted to post that one more time before the official announcement).

I still find this new iPhone redesign a bit odd from what I've seen of it, and whilst I'm pleased it's not truly edge-to edge (from a usability point of view) I am still a little bemused at the drive towards having such reduced bezels that the device has to lose the home button (and TouchID presumably) and adds the need for the notch.

Hopefully both Touch ID and the camera notch (frown? whatever we are gong to call it) can be somehow incorporated underneath the screen in future models, and that will be the best of all worlds.

I am going to get 7s Plus if 8 is going to be available "this fall" or "this holiday season"

wow these are some crappy ISPs...
Yes they are. But it's slowly happening to all of them in every state. Comcast, Verizon, Time Warner, and now Cox are all supporters of data caps and are currently rolling them out in multiple states. My state was hit this year from Cox and they're the only cable company in the state. So yeah sucks.

probably it's just me, but i think it'll be 8 _or_ 7s/7splus

A bit late on this. I no longer have interest in 4K content now that ISPs have started monthly data caps. 3 two hour movies will destroy your monthly allotment. Had to turn 4K off on Netflix as well. Lame

The whole 4K thing is still overall a cluster****. I just bought a new 4K tv with HDR and Wide color gamut and I still haven't watched anything that uses those.

Comcast has dropped most of their channels to 720p. They hide it from you because on the X1 you can select the resolution that is sent to your display, but they don't tell you what the source is. The only reason I know this is that I have a TiVo box as well and almost all the channels are actually 720p content.

As you point out, the only way to utilize the 4K AppleTV is going to be by streaming or downloading and a quality non-compressed file is going to be huuuuuuge.

No matter what they put on the inside, that phone looks hideous. Most certainly the top part looks so astoundingly ugly. Unbelievable if apple pulls that kind of design aesthetics out.
Looool every year the whiners stand in line for their next igadget.

What’s left for a November event?
HomePod. iMac. Already announced.

New iPads and MacBooks announced in June.

if apple doesn't play off this Car pool karaoke thing in the beginning i'm going to be wondering who's really in charge of marketing. I could see tim and crew take a trip from the cupertino office to the new office and jam out.

Exciting about the iPhone and apple watch announcements. my CC is going to be crying hahaha
