What was the price of the original iPhone and how did it compare to the popular phones of the day?

The 8GB version was $600, with no subsidy (*).

That's what led to Steve Ballmer laughing at the iPhone as too high priced for the US. And he was right. Within a short period of time, Apple was forced to reduce the price by a huge 1/3, down to $400.

As to how it compared, it was missing a lot of functionality. But it was easy for the neophyte to use. It was the first major phone to implement the change to finger friendly UIs, a change which had been widely predicted by insiders in 2006, to be coming in 2007.

(*) At least, none that helped the buyer. However, Apple had a deal with AT&T where Apple basically got each subscriber's monthly subsidy stipend in addition to the full $600 upfront price. This would've amount to a lot of money, but since the phone was already paid for, you could sell it without penalty. So, many people (~20+%) unlocked their phones to work on other networks and/or sold them that way. This meant Apple did NOT see the monthly payment from AT&T. So when Apple's first year's contract with AT&T was up, Apple gave in and went with the normal subsidy model where they got paid full price up front and the customer got a far lower upfront price.

What is with all these internet videos saying "thee" in place of "the" even when the following word does not begin with a vowel?

It doesn't sound as sophisticated as they might think.

I know of nobody that makes a distinction in how they pronounce "the" in front of a word. I don't even remember it being a topic in English class at any time in school. "A" and "an" were taught, but not "the". In fact, until I just looked it up I thought it was a regional idiosyncrasy like how we say "creek" where I live while my Northern cousins consistently say "crick" or Bostonians use "ah" instead of "er" at the end of a word (think chowder vs. chowdah).

I would bet the person speaking says it the same way in front of every word and is not doing it to be sophisticated.

Also hoping for an iPhone SE 2, especially if it has iPhone 7 internals. I doubt it, because there's no rumor buzz, but that would make my day.

I agree but I think that will come later, if it does (which I hope it does). I think 3 new iPhones (7S, 7S Plus, iPhoneNotchyNotch) on one day will be enough without adding the confusion of another one that still looks like an older one but is being updated to the specs of a far less old one (that is itself being replaced by a newer one that looks the same as the last one but isn't the highest specc'ed device being announced). See what I mean? :D

I'm just wondering how fast Apple will implement Bluetooth 5 in the iPhone and Apple Watch. This year? Next year? Any qualified guesses?

The best thing about the iPhone '8' is the return to a stainless steel frame (iPhone 3).

IMO, the aluminium in recent years always made the iPhone feel less premium.

A bit late on this. I no longer have interest in 4K content now that ISPs have started monthly data caps. 3 two hour movies will destroy your monthly allotment. Had to turn 4K off on Netflix as well. Lame
Where do you live if you don't mind me asking? I thought ISP data caps were a thing of the past.

Really looking forward to the iPhone 7S. It will replace my SE.
The iPhone SE came out after the iPhone 6s, so I'm curious why did you go with the smaller screen and now you will jump to the big screen two years later?

I have Comcast and technically they have always had caps, but told subscribers that they were not being enforced. About a year ago, they notified us that they would begin enforcing the caps. We have a 1TB limit and I live in Utah.

"Radically"? Isn't that a bit of hyperbole. I mean all the rumors indicate it will be the next evolution, not revolution.

The upcoming redesigned iPhone, which could be called the iPhone 8, the iPhone Pro, the iPhone Edition, or something else entirely, is expected to feature a 5.8-inch OLED display that's taller and slightly wider than the display of the iPhone 7 Plus, with rounded corners. It has super slim bezels around all sides, but there are no thicker bezels at the top or the bottom aside from a top "notch" that houses the front-facing camera and its accompanying sensors.

A small mistake here. The display will be slightly wider than the regular 7, not wider than the 7 Plus. It's narrower than the 7 Plus.

Apple Watch
Apple TV 4K
Apple Phone

Maybe it's iPhone 7s, iPhone 7s Plus, and the beginning of a new product, the Apple Phone. Guess we will find out soon!!! :)

Original iPhone was $500 and $600. Samsung phones I believe were topping out in the $100-$200 range. Now, they're all similar.

Is it just me or is the iPhone 8 the ugliest iPhone that Apple is going to produce? This camera sticking out for the 3rd time on an iPhone is absurd. Get this thing flush would you!?!?

No matter what they put on the inside, that phone looks hideous. Most certainly the top part looks so astoundingly ugly. Unbelievable if apple pulls that kind of design aesthetics out.

You are going to buy it no matter what so stop whining. :p

You will have the option of making that invisible almost certainly. I think what we are seeing is a hardware mock-up, without the visual enhancements. In other words; very misleading.

People have constructed something from parts and this is the result, and NOT what we will get visually.

Of course I could be wrong. It just seems unlikely they would settle for that. Then again, it's a matter of taste, so who knows. :D

Disagree. Can't wait for this iPhone to launch. I personally have been awaiting a new design and the rumored technology has my interest very piqued for Tuesday.

So you like the notch look? Not criticizing, it's a matter of taste. My sense here is that it's not popular. Personally I don't care. It's interesting.

It Doesn't bother me personally, more so, I understand its functionality which is to maximize the display. I know it's not favored by some, but I can look past it in light of all the other changes that are expected.
