i love thiner and lighter...i dont want to go back to bulky and heavy iphone 3g or macbook pro 2009..style, and people complain that apple go thin against perform...but if we compare iphone 3gs vs iphone 7...performance/battery wise...or macbook pro from 4-5 years ago vs current gen....i think people are crazy

Love this comment.

Oddly enough, it's kind of like an old Mac in a way - simplistically perfect, entirely true and purposeful with no fat to trim.

I'll admit it, I hate Apple. I hate them down to their Apple Core and it's the same seething hatred you feel for a girlfriend who's cheated on you. So deeply rooted in love that it becomes unbridled, passionate hatred. I feel cheated on, and yeah, I hate them for it. I've been devoted and grateful for decades, this company was 50% responsible for my love of graphic design. It felt like a privilege to work on Macs all day. Today... I want to jump ship but my devotion has gotten me into a bind, I'm all Mac since 1986. I don't want a different OS, I've invested so much into Mac OS, OS X, and now macOS that I just keep sticking it out even though emotionally I'm long gone. I can't fathom learning a new OS from scratch to the extent I know the Mac OSs. It's classic behavior: underdog makes it to the "big time", turns their back on their friends and family that supported them unconditionally for decades. That's how it feels to me anyway.
I'm genuinely curious, since you're one of the pros whom Apple seems to think can just move on to iPads and such, can you transition to doing your work on Apple's newer iOS products or any of its Mac OS products? I'm not asking if you're willing or unwilling, I just want to know if it's feasible.

While the rest of us content consumers can of course survive, if not thrive on iOS devices and skinny laptops, I do worry about those who create the content or participate in building out the ecosystem. What ARE folks like you doing?

Maybe spinning the Mac / macOS / professional products group off as a separate or subsidiary company wouldn't be such a bad idea. They could still work together to ensure everything works in the Apple ecosystem but at least they wouldn't have their engineers stolen to work on watches, iPhones, tvOS, etc. and could focus only on making Macs the best they can be, and not allowing macOS to languish.

Oh me too. I

Oh for sure. I'm just staring at this white sheet of paper on my desk hoping it inspires the next line of macbooks. Toss out the innards- to heck with them.

The way things are going, 2017 will be the last year of Mac. Apple is clearly killing Mac Pro and Mac mini. About the only thing we can expect is an updated iMac in 2017. Nothing else on the Mac side will be updated. Apple killed off almost all of the Mac ecosystem products (RIP AirPort and Thunderbolt Display)

Windows 10 is crap. It's not even close to macOS. I'd hate my life if I had to use that garbage day-to-day.
Sad but your statement could very well come true. Apple will just push mobile devices down our throats further and further. I hate mobile version of sites. I prefer browsing and streaming videos on a notebook. And there is still more productivity when using one including teaching ourselves how to touch type faster. Employers may sometimes ask what desktop we know how to operate? The key isn't being stuck on one platform but diversifying our range with the different tools out there.

Computers are the only things I like from Apple but they are headed from Apple Computer to Apple Inc to really just Apple Mobile.

I don't want Tim Cook's head on a platter.

I want Jony Ive's head on a platter.

Enough of the thin fetish. Every machine Apple makes has been made too thin or too small. We need power, not shrinkage.

And it's not Intel's fault. They make more powerful chips. You can't blame it on Nvidia or AMD either. The current laptops are irreparably compromised because Ive wanted to take away one more millimeter. The Mac "Pro" is a cruel joke, the cheese grater case was wonderful, the trash can is trash. Even the iMac is too thin, every other computer manufacturer knows how to install accessible RAM sockets and drive bays, Apple has forgotten how.

No, this is a rogue industrial designer gone bad, and he needs to be stopped.

It's not enough to have a vision. Your vision needs to not be something utterly stupid.

Jony luster faded long ago. He should also retire those pretentious, laughable. self-serving videos promoting Apple product for which he's responsible. Does he not know that he's become a butt of jokes?

No matter what they reveal, sales will be "Off the charts" and "A runaway success", but they won't quantify.
They are a publicly traded company - they have to quantify whether you want the exact number of airpods or watches or beats or ATV are broken down may not be there. Bottom line is that 2016 had slowing and decreasing sales. If sales go up or down, they will quantify. My bet is the set record sales and profits for all these products nobody says they want.

WHAT ... who can ever forget Phil Schiller strutting across the stage and uttering defiantly

"Can't innovate, my ass"
This has been misread. He actually said "Can't innovate my ass". When the next event comes, they will bring up Mac Pro on the screen, Phil will say "Sorry, tried but my ass just won't be innovated", take his pants off to show us the miserable sight, then announce Mac Pro is no longer with us.

I think it could even help them with creative acco... I mean margins and profits and all. Not to mention it helping Mac users. I don't understand where the idea came from that desktops and laptops are dead and "Super. Compuper." iPad is the future. Definitely not from the sales of iPads vs Macs.

Unfortunately, the assessment "Apple is expensive" isn't really true. Maybe you are looking at bargain PC computers to compare but if you compare workstation- or professional-class computer lines (mobile and desktop) from the big PC makers, Apple products look like bargains. My HP computer, as configured costs $6500. If you compare top-end boutique laptops from Clevo, MSI, Boxx etc that cost in the region of $4000-$7000 depending on options, well... Android flagship phones cost the same as an iPhone too.
True, to a degree. My S7 dropped in price about 40% between its release and me buying it. This does not happen with iPhones. As for PC computers, I would love to get something like the 12" rMB only with real keyboard. That either doesn't exist or costs the same as the rMB. AND comes with Windows. I know Win10 has improved, I've been blown away by its startup time, I am not a fan of Sierra, but I am still not quite ready to switch to it. I might keep macOS for stuff like Adobe and music software and get one of the Windows ultrabooks then turn it into Linux machine. But my dream, same as half of the forum's, would be a Macbook Air (with Air's keyboard) with retina screen. Which is not going to happen.

before Apple kill the macs update...at least can OFFER the last gen I/O...and offer an ultimate upgrade for mac mini/mac pro with better cpu/gpu and usb-c/TB3 ! at least we can use them for the next 5-6-7 years

I'm getting a new desktop, pad, and a new phone in 2017. To replace my Mac Mini, 3rd gen iPad and my iPhone 6.

Need a new desktop with 4k+ monitor, it's 2017.
Need a new phone, because, well, because. Had mine for a while.
Need a new pad. The case is worn out, it's only 16GB...time for a new one.

Whether or not they're Apple depends on what they do. So tired of waiting. They really need to fire the cook. Can't imagine he'll do much.
My prediction is we'll just have a bunch of fun new watch bands, some stylized earphones, more expensive product to cover for selling fewer.

Try going into an Apple store, nobody buying anything - just lots of people trying to get broken stuff fixed. I see tons of young people carrying around "pink" bags at the mall, nobody carrying Apple bags.

Wish they'd go back to insanely great design and simple software. Can we draft Reed Jobs? He's got to be old enough now. Or get The Woz involved? WTF Apple. Please prove me wrong in 2017.

The problem is, where do they go, Windows, it's still by far inferior to MacOs.
Or Android, I bought a Samsung Tab 2 months ago, it was actually of my girl but even she agreed an iPad is a much better experience than Android, after I brought it back and exchanged it.

Edit: I wrote iPod, should have been an iPad
you started out by saying "there are too many trolls". What defines a troll in your mind? Someone who expresses criticism of Apple? How do you differentiate legitimate criticism from criticism with the intent to stir up contention?

Dissatisfied Apple customers have options. Given the current trajectory of Apple re: notebooks/desktops, my current stock of Apple notebooks/desktops will be my last. Where will I go? Certainly not Windows 10. Should the time arrive when I need to depart from macOS, I'll be moving over to Linux. Linux has come a long way from the days of spending days getting it to work. There are many easy-to-use, easy-to-install, plug-n-play distros that will serve my purposes just fine.

I've been doing plenty of research and experimenting in preparation for that day and have found Elementary OS to be a great distro for my wife... very clean, simple, polished... and very macOS-like. She'll feel right at home with it.

For myself, I have narrowed it down to a few like MX-16 and Linux Mint MATE. I've found great native apps to fill virtually all of my computing needs, media creation, etc. There are a few gaps, but I have been able to get those Windows apps running nicely with WINE.

That's my exit strategy, but not my preferred option. I prefer that Apple get their act together and get back to doing those things that drew me to their notebooks and desktops in the first place.

very hard with that car...i better advise Apple to go for an all in one Television, with build in apple tv
The whole iCar project stems from an absurd overshoot of self-actualisation and overestimation.
Tesla accomplishes far more in CPU tech than Apple will ever accomplished in Car tech.

Most people in life would give anything to be as "out of touch" and "disconnected" as him. In the meantime he is still widely regarded.
Exactly, which clarifies the ever-continuing status quo of decline - without anybody interfering.

Well that's not my interpretation. A widely regarded industry guru is not the idiotic psychological profile you tried to paint. Really didn't know any other word to describe it other than "idiotic".

Apple's been phoning it in for too long, and I think it's finally really catching on in the mainstream public, to the point they might actually have to start delivering something good and with regularity. The way overdue MBP turned out to be an utter disaster of a release, and there is NO excuse given how long it took for them to release it.

They've now exited the display business, and are now abandoning the freaking routers/Time Capsules? And rumors of the iPad mini dying on the vine? My wife is overdue for a new mini, she uses her mini 2 for hours upon hours each day, but I refuse to buy a mini 4 at this point - even that's old and IIRC was a joke of an update when it was released. Surely they realize iPhones can't carry the company forever.

The current iPhone design is well worn out - as is the 2012 chamfered edge iPad design, macs don't get updated anymore, displays and routers are toast, and they just keep further fragmenting the iPhone line-up which is only going to breed resentment. The watch is whatever, I was glad to see the gold variants fail - it was good to see Apple's hubris be a little too much.

I really don't see where Apple is going to be in 5 years at their current trajectory. Or at least, where their product line up will be. iPhone's best days are already behind it - they simply don't create the insane want they used to since they are a mature product - can't be a one trick pony forever, so it's time to put MORE attention on all these products that they are abandoning, if anything.

What 2017 should look like:

The iPhone 8, called iPhone, is completely redesigned with and edge to edge display, integrated touch ID sensor, maybe glass backed. It is not curved and it is gorgeous. It comes in two sizes that aren't too large. The iPhone 7 continues to be sold as an entry level model.

The MacBook Pro looses it's touch bar and gains ports, a larger battery, and a glowing apple logo. It is also beautiful.

The iMac is essentially the same design but with an edge to edge display and a smaller chin.

The Mac Pro is entirely redesigned to become a plug and play customizable rack cube system. It is sold in components; hard drive, memory, video card, etc. Think Hal 900 gorgeous. It becomes the gold standard for users in the creative industries. This design is manufactured essentially unchanged for the next 10 years, an icon in design history displayed in modern art museums. While it contributes nothing to Apple's bottom line, it adds value to the Apple brand and sets the tone for the rest of Apple's product line.

A new Cinema Display is made to compliment the Mac Pro and Mini. Again, it contributes nothing to Apple's bottom line but satiates users.

Apple quietly works on an a fully autonomous subscription based car service, which remains unreleased for many years.

The Apple TV gains a higher end high spec model, with state of the art gaming, a slightly more intuitive remote, an apple designed game controller, comes with iMessages, FaceTime, Safari and features a broader app ecosystem.

A low end Apple Watch is released for teens and hipsters. It is less expensive, has a round face, uses the same bands, and is much less feature rich. It's primary function is to display notifications and track fitness.

A new pared down streamlined Apple Music app is released with a simpler logic based UI.

Does anyone else get the feeling that Apple only wants its customers to be users and not creators?

I have this feeling that Apple doesn't want people to be able to creatr/think for themselves so that people who could have potentially created something new (and maybe in direct competition with Apple) will not have had the opportunity to do so. Thus Apple being able to stay in control of the general population even more so.

I am with you here. In about a week, Dell will update their XPS line, Lenovo already announced a new X1 Carbon (sadly only 16GB RAM) and Asus probably will announce new laptops as well at CES.

Then, I'll pull the trigger and end 25y of buying Macs to switch to Elementary OS - as a software developer, I am not welded to the Apple ecosystem like graphics designers. I just switched my mother to Ubuntu + Cinnamon and she's happy so far.
