I think it has been said in this thread, and several other times over the last 3-6 years, but I'm going to pile on.

There needs to be an xMac; Mini-tower format, discrete graphics port/card, PCI-e slots, room for multiple drives blade SSDs, hard drive bays for including built-in Time Machine Hard drives (3.5inch platters), Lots of space for RAM, DVD-Burner bay. Forget the idea of Pro, as in professional, too vague, they need a PROducers mac for people that spend 10+hours a day on a mac and produce real content, real reports. The current mac pro is too 'cute' and too obvious an attempt to make the mac an appliance, rather than a tool.

The iMac. If its not broken don't fix it.

The MacBook Air.

Should have been given a Retina display four generations back and despite consumers crying out for this Apple turned a deaf ear. Apple are entirely out of touch with the consumer.

The consumer for years has been crying for the resumption of the 17" MacBook Pro. yet Apple do not listen.

I'm not sure where you get the notion "consumers [are] crying out" for those things. Sure, fan sites have people who want them but they are a small sliver of actual users. The Air is a lower cost small Mac that essential replaced the old white MB. adding a retina screen would bump the price up to where it'd be above the critical $1K price. As for 17 inch Macs, demand has been dead for years. Even in 2010, 17 in laptops were only 6%; in Apple's case sales estimates when the 17 was last sold were of 3.1M Mac laptops sold only 50K(!) were 17 inch models. I tried to find sales numbers that are recent than 2010 but could only find estimates for high end gaming machines, a number of which have 17 inch screens. Those were estimated at 3% of the market in 2017.

It makes no sense for Apple to design and build a 17inch MBP in the face of what appears to be very limited demand; they'd likely never recoup the costs, especially since if much of the demand is from high end users they'll want the latest CPU and GPU combinations which means a very short life cycle for a niche product. Apple doesn't do niche computer products so no 17 inches.

OS X Snow Leopard is in desperate need of attention. Currently iTunes on Snow Leopard will not sync with iOS 10 therefore iTunes 12 is urgently needed along with Safari 9. It's not as though it would be difficult. Many Macs are stuck at Snow Leopard therefore deserve attention. Sure there is the argument to upgrade to a later OS X release but there are plenty of cases where this is not an option and why should the user purchase a new Mac when their current one is working just fine and thats not mentioning Rosetta.

Snow Leopard came out in 09 and was replaced in 11; Rosetta only existed to handle the jump from PPC to Intel. Both were EOL'd long ago so it's unreasonable to expect Apple to keep supporting them. I run SL on a 10 year old Mini as a server, where it still works just fine, but to sync later devices I run the latest version of OS X on a newer machine.

Tim: He guys, what are you staring at me ?
All: Oh Tim...we're so bored. It's the 2nd working day of the year and everything seems so the same. Sure, we got our rise, but we don't know what to spend it on. We already own everything that we can imagine.
Tim: Well, guess you were overpaid already, so the raise was merely for our corporate image. That's what our consultants say. I am busy replacing all golden cranes with platina in my 35 bathrooms. I do that for the environment. The world reserve on gold is limited, you know.
Joni: I'm still so baffled by my groundbreaking iPhone 7 design... So don't count on me today.
Tim: Well, there is nothing at hand today so we do count on you. Therefore, I brought some noodles and rice for lunch.
All: Meh, what's that for ? We have the largest restaurant with professional caterers and 8 diff....
Tim: No, we eat here at my desk. I want to see how you react on Chinese food because that's where you're going to stay for the next few weeks...
Angela: But I have my regular januari fashion events in Berlin, Paris, Tokyo. Joni is going with me.
Tim: Joni isn't going anywhere. I have rescheduled his agenda for a traineeship at Xiaomi. He will stay for 6 weeks in Xhi Gua Yiayang Phong Gnoa Gnoa Ram Pan.
I want him only to return if he can design a bezel-free device like the Xiaomi Mi Mix.
Phil will be joining him to make sure that there will be a battery in the device.
Eddy will join and make sure that it plays Apple Music. Greg will design iOS icons for the Lollypop stuff. Dr. Dré will be there for medical support. Iovine will learn you to properly pronounce "OLED" and "Wireless". Or anything to have those guys off our Campus, anyway...
Greg: But our customers will find out that it runs on Android and Android only.
Tim: Huh ? Customers ? Since when do we listen to those ? Never seen them. Cut another port if necessary to keep them busy.
Phil: I am planning an adapter for Android anyway
Angela: I am restyling the Apple Stores with special Adapter Showcases.
Theme of the Year: AirPod flossy boxy.
Tim: Ooooaamh Angela, mmmhhh....you are thrilling me SO much by saying what's in the pipeline !!
Angela: Fine. And where are you going yourself ?
Tim: I will attend a traineeship at the nearest McDonalds here. "Back to Practice": reinvent what customers look like, what they want, and why companies exist in the first place.
All: Wauw, we would happily join. But that's too far off for us...
Tim: Guess so...next year maybe

I want Apple to have something that is the best. Right now I'm struggling to point to anything Apple does that is the best.

NO: Maps, aerial photography, Siri, Mac Pro, Mac Mini, iMac, Spell/Grammar Check (Grammarly is best), Productivity software (Numbers, Pages), Mail app., Photos app, iTunes, MacOS ram usage, most compatible browser, fastest browser, most secure-able browser (it can't run EFF security extensions), most free cloud storage, user controlled attention focus (on the mac, a (re)starting app constantly takes attention away from what I'm working on to show me app splash screens and the new window it spawns.) Hard drive capacity and RPM speed options are outdated across the platform.

Maybe: iPhone (excluding screen quality) but it does have the most cohesive experience and an ecosytem of 64 bit apps that are specifically designed for the iPhone/iPad hardware, regular updates for hardware that is upto 5 years old, built quality, retail store support. Macbooks are expensive for what you get, but they do have innovation with industry support (touch bar) and are forward looking all open standard ports...no mag-safe, etc.

Yes (Things Apple is best at): Apple Beats Radio, I don't think there is another radio station that is as good., Apple's headphones might be some of the best, and the wireless charging case is cool...getting great reviews.

I got a new HP laptop from work recently. When you open the lid it doesn't turn on. You have to push the button to turn it on. Then you have to wait while the color blobs dance around to get windows back up. It takes about a minute. But it's a minute every single time. The other day it flipped screen orientation sideways randomly. Just the screen, not the mouse. When I reboot I have had to wait for updates to install several times.

I was also really intrigued by the Surface, and profoundly disappointed by the recent MacBook Pro update. But this windows experience has been a reminder of why I switched to Mac, and reassurance that I will be staying with Mac for at least for another generation. I just hope the next round MacBook Pro is less disabled.

I have a new HP laptop at work. I could write a novel about the problems I have with it, but to keep this short lets just say lots of things don't work correctly. As bad as Apple is right now, and I do think it has gone down in hardware, customer service and software, it is nowhere near the free-fall that HP is right now. I have no idea how HP is staying in business as work also got new HP printers and the entire office is having problems with them.

So many good opinions in this thread. Here is what Apple will actually do.
Partner with that guy who can't sing but does car Karaoke.
Put out another boring iMac with the same 'chin' form factor they have used for 10 years.
Watch bands
White colored iPhone
Update CPU internals in iPads, No OLED
Limited volume of premium OLED iPhones.
Super boring Mac Pro spec bumps, with new USB-c ports.

LOL! With Tim Cook in charge, it's simply gonna be iPhone 7S with minor iterations. So.... better camera and faster chip (as always), maybe remove another mechanical item like the side volume buttons (on-screen adjustment only), maybe a new glossy color that will scuff up nicely so everyone can complain, and possibly something frivolous again like stickers in the OS. Oh sure, they'll talk up some new things in iOS that no one will ever use, but in the end, it's gonna be a 7S. It's Tim!

I was at Best Buy last night and I got to try out a S7 Edge with a Gear VR headset... that was pretty damn awesome and it cost $99.

Apple would have to pull out a miracle at this point to make me get another iPhone.

Robert Scoble predicted the upcoming iPhone will be unlike any phone created. He said that he based his prediction on insider information. His prediction was augmented reality being incorporated into a phone that will have a clear frame.

I think his prediction is possible and would be revolutionary. The predictions you're making about the next iPhone on here are a letdown if that's all there is.

I'd love to say that my expectations are low, but the reality is that they are non-existent. Hopefully Apple can surprise me with something that I actually want to buy this year.

Like others, Apple is going to have to do something pretty innovative to restore my faith in the company. I was contemplating upgrading from my mid 2012 Macbook Air late last year, but I was very, very underwhelmed by the latest iteration of the Macbook Pro so I held off and actually did a fresh install of macOS on my machine, and it's been running really well since (touch wood).

For me, iPhone has been stagnating for quite a few years. I see each iteration with very small, incremental improvements - for me, these aren't enough to warrant upgrading. I did think a redesign in terms of design was needed, so I'm interested to see how it plays out, though I won't upgrade regardless, as an onlooker it'd be nice to see Apple do something different.

I've seen someone say that people who are the most critical of rMBP 2016 are ones that can't afford it. That's the point. rMBP 2016 has not been designed as a pro machine. It's been designed as "I can afford this". Removing the battery time indicator is a good example of this. It doesn't matter how long the battery lasts. It's thinner and comes in two colours. Expect Apple to go further in that direction.

I think the "can't" afford argument is a little overly reductive. Personally, I can afford most things I might want (a new VR system necessitating a new pc build, for example) but to my chagrin I decide it's not yet worth it to me. I can afford a new MBP and would love an upgrade from my 2012 version. But, the trade offs aren't worth it yet. (To be clear, I want to buy a product without needing it, but I do weigh costs/benefits because I want it for certain purposes, not just to have it.) To make it even more complicated, I can get work to pay for it, but it'll be my computer for 3-4 years after said purchase. This is the first time I haven't been tempted to pull the trigger and immediately get a new MBP when it's about time for a new comp. I came close to the razor stealth, but their customer service annoyed me.

I realize that my response is a digression, but it has got me thinking. There are many who have criticized those negative voices as not legitimate because they don't own a particular line they are criticizing. Others get upset that some critique the CEO or whole company. I've seen a few proponents often including "I'm a stockholder," as if it makes their POV more important. When those of us who are critical are constructing our view, we may be basing it on a different kind of investment in the company as a consumer buying into an ecosystem that persists across lines and over time (to an extent). While our personal investment may not be much (I've funneled probably around 30k Apples way between work and home purchases in the last several years). I use my iPad Air 2, iPhone 6s, and MBP everyday. I find overlap in apps and cloud services convenient and worthwhile. Owning the current model or another product that is part of the ecosystem is not a precursor to a legit gripe about said model/product or the overall creative direction of the company.

Having two closely sized iPad Pro models does seem redundant. But without the 9.7 model, the cost of entry into non-mini iPads may be too high (assuming Apple does kills the iPad Air2).

Just as they've kept the MacBook Air around as a low cost option, I can see them doing the same with the 9.7 iPad Pro...at least for another year.

Presumably they would keep the Air as the standard iPad and the 10.5" Pro would be priced the same as the current Pro.

With a 1.5x difference in size, the 10.5" and 12.9" are still quite different, but the main reason to use 10.5" is so the same resolution can be used for both. Also, competitors offer 10.5" tablets so the iPad is at a disadvantage there from a marketing standpoint.

I fear you are correct. Apple now produce luxury items for rich dbs who buy based on style and status. Even their new ads have the vibe of overpriced luxury clothing or jewelry, or an English smartphone maker. They're aimed not at Apple's traditional computer users who value design and performance but at computer illiterate dbs who always buy whatever is most expensive because they've got discerning taste and must always have the "finest things in life."

It's the influence of Jony Ive - the most overrated industrial designer in the world. He's the one at Apple who flaunts his wealth and knows little about computers. Steve Jobs was a good judge of ability and he knew to keep Ive in the design lab despite repeated requests by Ive to get a say in UX design. And Ive's designs were better then because the design lab is where Jobs spent the most time. Without Jobs's guidance Ive would have crapped out in the 90s when Apple went bust.

True, but how necessary is a speed bump for most Mac users? For email, web browsing, writing, etc. current machines are more than sufficient.

That's why there used to be both pro and consumer models. But even then, the consumer models used the latest silicon because it's more efficient and competitive.

Anyways, current Mac hardware has more problems than old silicon. It lacks versatility and practicality as a result of Apple's obsession with minimalist thin designs.

Based on the accolades and awards Jony Ive has received, he probably is worth every penny of his compensation that apple pays him. But to each their own view.

I said Mac Pro though. Although I can totally imagine Kanye West using a maxed out Mac Pro for email.
Fair enough. My mistake; I was referring to MBP. The Mac Pro certainly needs speed bumps for the audience it target.

Might they do something with the ppi of the 4.7" model? Or what ppi could the rumoured 5" model have?

That's a good question. It would make sense to use the same resolution as the Plus, so 1920x1080 at 5" puts it at 441 ppi, the same as most of iPhone's competitors. That size LCD panel is practically a commodity product now and if Apple used an edge to edge 5" display the case would be about the same size.

That seems sensible, but what is likely? I expect a standard "S" refresh. We have the rumors which suggest only a new "Pro" glass-backed OLED design, but already there are reports of constrained OLED panels so prices will be too high for Apple's precious margins. Thus the rumored "Pro" model will be postponed until 2018.

The iPhone sales slump will worsen and Apple's executive team will keep doing what they're doing because that's how they roll.

What iphone sales slump? The January seasonal slump where every year apple reduces production?

I don't think you understand how corporations work. The user should purchase a new Mac because stockholders want to see money coming in. In fact, I am quite sure Apple will never make a mistake such as making a computer that works fine for so many years. Our iMac 2011 still works. Big mistake. Huge. It should break every three years and one day* (to make sure Applecare doesn't cover it anymore) and require replacement, or get forced system updates impossible to revert that would slow it to a crawl. /s

* I owned a Sony walkman that broke precisely one day after warranty expired. THIS is how you do it!

Reminds me of this secret video recording of a apple conference call where Timmie admits apples strategy

Tim: He you guys, terrific news !!
All: Oh, new products ?
Tim: No, ask Joni. But I am soo excited:
Today, I announce our 1st factory running on Solar Energy of 2017 !
All: Then why's that ?
Tim: All for the environment ! We must bring down our carbon footprint. We have the best....
All: OMG, but why would we need a factory ? We produce everything in China ! Those guys hardly know what the environment is - making them so dirt cheap.
Tim: Hey, that might be right - I found no word for it in Chinese. And I needed to come up with some news, so I got to do it here...
All: Then why would you ?
Tim: Because my spindoctor says so. It's to stay relevant...and also because of the Don-factor.
All: What ? Is it Don's factory ?
Tim: No, it's about getting on speaking terms with our President.
All: Oh, but you were on Hillary's side. Anyway, what does it actually produce ?
Tim: Gee, why even bother? Just sun-backed air! Why? Because everything we make, just sells. But with zero footprint ! We're the first to support the US Clean Air Act...blah....output exactly fits our pipeline...plumpedy... Don's support ...dramatically enhances our product portfolio.... blah pedibla
All: Mehh. Stop the tape. Boring stuff. We have better things to do, like ehh...anyway, we have. However: Don may always bother us if it's really relevant !
Tim: Oh, typically Don, always. Wish I could...
