I'm looking forward to a new iPad Air/Pro and the new iPhone. I'm still using a 12 Pro and Air 2, and they definitely need replacing later this year. The iPhone is ok in speed, but the iPad is really damn slow.

I’m pretty sure SMS/MMS will continue to work as it does now, if you communicate with a random phone number.
I expect that it will. At the very least, that's what I would do if I were designing it: Send iMessage if the recipient is on Apple; if not, but the recipient is using RCS then send that; otherwise send SMS/MMS.

But that's not really the point. The point is that SMS & MMS are so old that they are obsolete, thus the need for a newer protocol such as RCS. But SMS is 30+ years old and MMS is 20+ years old; it's time for Apple to stop using decades-old technology.
