Looks like 2024 will be the year where we finally get large OLED displays from Apple. Larger than an iPhone, that is. Considering iPhone gained OLED in late 2017, and OLED TVs and tablets have been around for even longer, it’s quite surprising it took them this long. I know they have high expectations in terms of panel quality, but still.

Or it could always launch with a standard A17.
Maybe it doesn’t have the full 8 GB of RAM, a GPU core disabled and a slightly lower clockspeed.
I don’t think there will be an A17. The A17 Pro is an outlier because it’s being manufactured on a node process (N3B) that’s not optimal for TSMC when it comes to yields and will only be used for the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. The N3E node process will be used for the A18, A18 Pro which I suspect will be in most new products launched by Apple in 2024. I’m not sure what the M4 will be based on? The current iPad has an A14 so I can see the next version getting the A16. That would be a noteworthy upgrade for that device. Going from an A15 to a A16 wouldn’t be so I think the A18 is more likely for the next Apple TV and iPad mini.

OLED displays are thinner, so Apple may be planning to cut down on the thickness of the iPad Pro. A design update is expected to accompany the OLED transition, and the new iPads will come in 11.1-inch and 13-inch sizes, up from the current 11-inch and 12.9-inch sizes. The size increase may come from a change in bezel width, so physical size could remain roughly the same.

Please, I hope this doesn’t mean we’re getting a notch on the iPad Pro lineup.

This is also quite possible, and was my original thought as well, but I also thought the same about the M3, and yet they put out that thing as quickly as they could.
Even in a product like the iMac, which could easily go several more years without an update and has already skipped a generation, received a chip based on the N3B node.

Also, the iPad mini isn’t really a high-volume product at least from what I’ve gathered, so I don’t think it’s totally out of the realm of possibilities.
But who knows.

Dynamic island anyone?

Sure, I'd take that over a notch.

But why didn't Apple didn't do Dynamic island on their laptops?
The iPad doesn’t need either, what the iPad needs is an actually useful menu bar at the top of the screen.
Kind of like the Mac menu bar but maybe more simple, with quick shortcuts to an apps settings and some other quick functions alongside what’s up there now.

It would suck if Apple changed the way bands attach to the Apple Watch. Especially for the people who have accumulated a sweet collection of them like myself. Plus, they are not cheap, and selling them the year before at $100 a pop for many styles and then abandoning the system the next year would be significantly crappy.

Agree. I was going to upgrade my SSS7 next year and now I don’t know whether to go ahead and upgrade to the 9 so all of my bands will fit (I also have a good collection) or wait for the 10 (X) and give my 7 to my daughter with all my bands and start over. I guess I could wait and decide after it comes out next year.

I get that people who paid a lot for bands would be a little angry or maybe a lot, but how else can Apple bring us a redesigned watch with improvements? This redesign could possibly mean more room for a larger battery for better battery life? Change is necessary at some point and maybe this will be a valuable reminder to never go overboard with Apple-related accessories because it’s inevitable that they’ll become obsolete someday. Maybe three or four bands at most. I guess this new magnetic clasp system will be around for several years to come, maybe eventually coming to the Ultra series by 2025?

I also have a Series 7 and plan to upgrade to the X/10. I won’t give my S7 midnight aluminum to anyone, I’ll just keep it myself as a backup. Battery health is still good, at 98%. I might get a more premium Apple Watch this time (titanium?).

There's lots of footage already floating around showing that it does
Not true. There might be footage showing multiple visionOS windows, but not Mac screens. Only a single 4K virtual Mac display is supported:

So for those hoping that you could have a whole array of virtual monitors in your mixed-reality workspace, sadly that won’t be possible.

...which makes perfect sense. After all, everything is happening wirelessly. A wired connection would be necessary to push multiple virtual displays. I wouldn't be surprised if there are resolution limitations as well. This is basically screen sharing.

So how do the other AR glasses like xreal achieve this?

Unlike the notch which is a fixed size, an expanding rectangle would conflict with the menu bar items.

Yes, that true. But doesn't the expanding rectangle conflict with an iPhone's time/wifi status menu bars as well?

Dynamic Island notifications are also meant to be quick glances that you could easily dismiss.

The iPhone’s time, WiFi, etc are not clickable. Meanwhile imagine trying to click on a menubar item only to have it disappear or move just because the DI expanded. A fixed size notch is better than an expanding DI on laptops.

No news of a potential update of the old Air or some kind of budget-oriented replacement?

I'd really like to replace my Intel Mac mini with an Apple Silicon model, but I'll wait until M3 models are available. It just doesn't make sense to get a model with an M2 chip that's already a year and a half old at this point, especially as M3 has already been around for a quarter.
Agreed! When Apple announced the M3 Max MBP in October, it effectively obsoleted the remaining M2 products in the lineup.

I’m not familiar with the xreal glasses but I took a quick look at their site. Specs say they have DisplayPort, so I think that’s your answer. Wired connection.

But can they really display 3 4K screens?? If so, why are you waiting for Vision Pro? Xreal costs 1/7th a Vision Pro.

Because of the spacial video and integration with OS though the xreal has pretty good reviews and I was tempted

Instead of wanting more, I want less. Specifically, I wish the would stretch out the MacOS and iOS updates. Annual releases are NOT a good thing. An 18 or even 24 month release cycle would be better, and spend the extra time and resources for bug fixes of current releases and reduction of bugs prior to new releases.
But that would mean less profits and Apple has to keep its shareholders happy…. in the end it’s all about making profits by convincing people what they need 😊

But Apple doesn’t charge for MacOS or iOS updates. So how does that reduce profits? It doesn’t require Apple to change their obsolescence timeline (although that is another concern). Instead of annual updates, if the update rate was every 24 months but the hardware was compatible with ~4 updates instead of ~8 updates, there would not be an impact to Apple profits. But would improve the user experience while reducing software bugs.

I’ll be tempted by the size increase on the 16 Pro Max. The 6.9” is the only thing I miss about my old Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra. It’s subtle but it does make a difference to me.

Yawn... Same old same old... Updated iPhone, iPad, Mac's, etc... Newer processor, AI in al OSes, really, what is actually NEW since the MacBook Air and Jobs pulling it out of an interoffice memo?

Studio M1 Pro currently does everything I need, so why the M3? Faster, are there more games? more software? lower prices?

I say everything they talk about is outright boring and so what... I won't use iOS 18 or iPad OS 18, or even the new Mac OS once they integrate AI; enough already I can think for myself.

Remember Alan Kays knowledge navigator demo from 1987? Wouldn't it be nice if you could talk in natural language to Siri and it could then fetch all the documents/web links you need for a VTC you are attending in a couple of hours?
