Apple is planning on releasing a nearly identical upgraded iPhone this year

Cool story. Where did you get that from? The rumor blogs that so far know absolute nothing about iPhone 7?

Need I remind you the same "sources" of information knew absolutely nothing about iOS 10 this year?

No surprise here.
Three years of the iPhone 6. The smaller iPhone on offer is simply an update of a 4 or 5 year old model.
Stale, stagnant, and high priced computer line up, with no clear indication of Apple even continuing or updating half the models.
iPad sales down for years now, and Apple's solution is to offer even more expensive models under the guise of being "Pro".
Then there's Cooks whole stupid storage tiers on newer iOS devices, Apple's all too obvious effort to shake down customers.
This company, and Tim Cook in particular, need a good kick in the arse.
Two hundred billion plus in the bank and this is the best they can do?

Hardware and software are a tough comparison considering one's physical while the other is not. I'm willing to bet that the rumors are fairly accurate considering the amount of leaks we've seen thus far. If you account for most iPhone releases (with the exception of the iPhone 5), these leaks have been fairly indicative of the final product.

...
Regardless, Apple have enough cash and experience to pull off some mindblowing updates to their products. Just hold the cynicism until the end of the year.

It's nice to imagine that what you describe could become reality. The problem is leadership.

I've been an Apple guy forever... started by writing Hypercard extensions on a Mac Plus. Back then, Apple and third party developers all shared an excitement about the beauty of Apple software. Everything had to be great, everything had to adhere to the higher than high standards, everything had to bring out some wondrous innovation.

That was the Steve Jobs dictate, and his insane insistence on meeting his standards.

That was then.

Tim Cook is a great manager. He's a great tactician when it comes to large scale production, supply chain management, fulfillment, etc.

He sucks at innovation, he sucks at inspiring his troops to produce greatness, he sucks at leading what was a great innovation organization to innovate.

It's time for new leadership at Apple. It's time for Apple to move back into the slot where every time they released a product the only possible response was "Wow! I have to have one."

It's so time for that to happen.

Later edit: Wow. Rights to "Carpool Karaoke". That should really move the needle. NOT!

No Mac updates doesn't mean lower Mac sales it means lower sales in general. If Apple dont care about Macs it will have a ripple effect and people will sit on the fence or look at other options...and it will get worse year over year. Even I, myself, will hold of any iPhone or iPad purchase until I see that Macs and the Pro market still is being cared for or if I should switch to PC and android.

Of course their numbers lie, because even if I would buy 1 new Mac every 2 or 3 years, I would buy at least 2 new phones and maybe 2 new tablets for my family (yearly)...and Im pretty sure thats the case for a lot of people. So no wonder the iPhone gets the biggest revenue. But it doesnt mean Apple should put all their eggs in that basket, as it seems they are doing these days.

Funny how it seems that Apple don't seem to understand this when everyone else does.

Maybe I'm not typical - but maybe I am. While still using a Thinkpad, I entered AppleWorld with an iPad, then a Mac and iPod Touch, followed by more Mac's for my kids, an Airport Extreme - you get the picture. Then El Capitan came along with it's SIP/rootless lock down, neutered disk utility and Mac's turned into glued and soldered 'disposable' machines. Now instead of looking forward to buying new products, I'm thinking of ways to keep what I have alive as long as possible. I don't want or need the thinnest computer in the world. I want products that work and can upgrade/repair myself. It takes about 3 seconds to replace the battery on my Thinkpad; 20 min to replace display, and less time than that to upgrade RAM or SSD. I can do most of that on a 2012 MBP - but this is 2016.

Apple needs to fire on all cylinders. Buy the best companies out there so now you are the best+erase competition. Upgrade every product to the latest technology and highest quality, push specs. Increase QC and chop heads for every buggy OS release. They have tons of money for God's sake. But Tim Cook is not the man, he's too soft. It's like a green activist driving an F1 car in the world championship.

Yeah, Cook needs to address the world economic situation or he's just plain trash. He especially needs to get onto fixing the reduced economic growth rates in China. I mean, this is one of Apple's most important markets, so what is he thinking by doing nothing about it?

I just bought a BLU R1 HD from Amazon for $60. It is a perfectly fine smartphone running a fairly stock version of Android 6.0 without much filler except for Amazon apps (which are generally useful if you are a Prime member). Of course my 6s is much better phone. But wow a 90% lower price is something that pops out. It is going to be hard to keep selling huge number of iPhones at prices north of $600.

Maybe if that idiot Tim Cook spent more time on the product line up and making it better instead of being a social justice warrior, things would have been in the positive. But that's just my opinion.

I agree the hardware is in need of a revamp, more specifically MacBook Pro's. But to call him an idiot is disrespectful and back handed. I know your entitled to your opinion, but there is no need for name calling. Some are believers, others are not.

The CEO doesn't work on the product line. :|
But he sets the importance, funds the R&D, and sets the environment where the best people want to work. Everyone inside Apple knows that Macs are doomed, since they are so neglected. Nobody is rushing to be a Mac engineer or Mac product innovator. Apple's DNA is to throw everything out with the bathwater, unless someone stands up and says "No, we need this for long term". Cook's long term is the next quarter and he is failing at that.

Oh boy! Tech sites are going to have a field day with this. Maybe Tim should take the Cabinet job offer from Hillary in November. At the rate Apple is going...hmm.

And you know this, how?

Sorry, Tim is busy hosting fundraisers for Paul Ryan. Lol. It's clear he wants to get into politics.

So many people trash Apple, but come back here constantly to learn more.

Apple has hundreds of billions of dollars in the bank. Literally hundreds of billions. That they sell a few million more or a few million less of something every 3 months is relatively inconsequential. They are at the top of the business world because they do what they do so well.

You weren't going to add more RAM anyways. You weren't going to upgrade this year anyways? I was going to buy another iMac, but I can wait.

Watch the stock soar.
