Again this will appeal to many that just want a phone and potentially move people away from other cheaper Android devices. It will work as Apple intended. Not the best phone but better than your odd brand Android for a similar price and cheaper than the higher-end iPhones/Androids with largely the same functionality.

Boring, but they work well. I downgraded from a 13 mini to the current SE. There really aren't any features on the 13 that I miss except 5g, so the new SE will work nicely for me if it does support 5g.

A major killer for me with the current iPhones with MagSafe is the fact they don't always work with QI chargers. Both mine and my wife's cars have built in QI charging neither would work with the 12 or 13 mini. Works fine with the SE.

I use a 12 mini right now and will be quite curious to see that rumoured SE 2023 phone with a 5.7” screen and iPad-like TouchID in the power button. My only concern is that since the SE line so far has been all about reusing the old designs, this new SE would not fit this concept?

Battery life is already a major concern on the current SE, I was hoping they would do something about that - I would take better autonomy over 5G anytime!

The current design inherited from the iPhone 8 could use a refresh, it looks dated and out of sync with the market, but that's just aesthetics.

5G shouldn’t even be a selling point. It’s the biggest technology flop in the past 10 years. Where’s that super high speed data? Doesn’t exist unless you happen to stand in a land mass that makes up in 0.0000005% of the US.
It shouldn’t, but it is. I mean look at Apple’s iPhone 12 announcement, and it almost as if it was sponsored by Verizon… ?

The carriers are pushing 5G phones to be available as cheap as possible to push people into upgrading their phones. This also benefits the phone maker, ie Apple. For the regular consumer, a larger number of something looks “better” than the smaller number that they have. Megapixel, 4G, 5G, 64bit, etc etc.

There’s also a logical reason in pushing 5G. Some carriers/countries are already planning/phasing out 3G. Pushing customers to 5G by offering cheaper 5G handsets helps that transition. Samsung, Xiaomi, etc have 5G models already at the $200 price point thanks to Dimensity 700. I’m sure the carriers are pushing Apple to have all 5G capable lineup.

Coming from the SE1, I am kind of stuck between the rumored SE3 and the 13 Mini for my next iPhone.

My SE1 is getting older, so I would like to get something new. I really dislike the design of the SE2/Rumored SE3, and it is a little too big than what I want, but I like Touch ID and the cheaper (rumored) price is nice.

I like the design of the 13 Mini, and the size of it will be closer to the SE1, but think I will miss Touch ID.

I think I am leaning towards the iPhone 13 Mini.
Get the 13 Mini. Everyone I know that has one really loves it. A shame Apple is canceling it. Much better display, much better cameras, FaceID which is about to work with or without masks for everyone with FaceID, and it will be much closer in size to your 2016 SE.

It’s unfortunate, but the mini have served its purpose, ie pushing the price of the regular iPhone by $100 without anybody realizing it. Now Apple wants to increase the price of the Pro models, so they need something in between the regular iPhone and the iPhone Pro. Enters the iPhone Max.

Love/hate Apple, but that’s their business strategy. Upselling. The “better products” just feel like a side effect… ?

Agreed. With that being said, this new iPhone SE really has nothing to get excited about except a faster chip.

I've got 5G phones on both AT&T and T-Mobile and am constantly unimpressed by the speeds when I see 4 bars of 5G and run a quick speed test and see LTE speeds (or worse), I realize I've been duped.

I hope that, like the 2016 iPhone but unlike the 2020 iPhone SE, the 2022 iPhone SE has the same main rear camera as the latest flagship iPhone being sold at its date of release.

Tim Cook is a nickel-and-diming cheapskate who tries to cut corners and maximize costs to please his beloved shareholders, but it's bad for users. The 2020 iPhone SE had a rear camera that was two generations old, specifically, the rear camera of the iPhone 8/main rear camera of the iPhone X.

Naming

Apple could call the new iPhone SE the iPhone SE 5G to differentiate it from the 2020 version, but it could also just stick with the standard iPhone SE name.

Display analyst Ross Young has said that the iPhone SE could be called the "iPhone SE Plus" even though it's not getting a larger display, but that seems unlikely because historically, the "Plus" naming has denoted a larger screen size.
Calling the upcoming iPhone SE the "iPhone SE Plus" would be illogical and confusing. And that's precisely why I could see Tim Cook approving such a name. After all, Clueless Cook approved the name "MagSafe" for an iPhone charger that has absolutely nothing to do with keeping an iPhone safe in the event of the power cord being tripped.

it's time to make the screen bigger on the SE. 5.5 inches would be perfect. The phone is simply too small.

Provided this didn't make the actual phone bigger, or introduce a ghastly notch....

I honestly felt like I had upgraded rather than downgraded when I went to an SE from a 13 mini in virtually all aspects except for the screen and the camera. I love the fact my iPhone charges completely reliably on all QI chargers, including my car one. I love the fact my iPhone has TouchID, it was only when I went back to this that I realised how much I missed it. That is clearly a personal choice, but I just don't like faceID (and, of course, it is worse with a mask on). I also prefer the size, it is noticeably thinner in my hand than the mini and I (again personal choice) prefer the rounded corners.

However, I do not spend a huge amount of my time on my phone. I don't do mobile phone gaming, or have a million apps. Its largely still just a communication tool for me, which is probably why the small screen doesn't really bother me.

If I had one complaint about the SE it would be the battery life, although even then I get a full days use out of mine, its only when I tether it to my MacBook that the battery starts to bleed!

The rumoured 5.7" SE3 could just be the Iphone X chassis (5.8" screen) with slightly thicker bezels with no Face ID, but touch id on the power button (replacing SS Frame with Aluminium, OLED to LCD etc). Technically this is still reusing an old design, and further fitting the SE profile by being a smaller iphone design, where as the XR/11 chassis is larger at 6.1.

This would be awesome, I will happily take any screen between 5.4-5.8”. ?

iPhone SE XR Plus Pro Max

lol -- in all seriousness, some of the naming the last few years is just "weird"

The iPhone SE and the word new should never go together, because the iPhone SE 3 still looks like an iPhone 6 and has the same low resolution 4.7" LCD display, with that same wall hugging battery, and same old single camera.

The iPhone SE should be renamed to iPhone RE for Recycled Edition. Talk about putting lipstick on a pig.

I’m hoping 5G is not a battery killer for the iPhone SE, 2022 model. Hopefully, Apple can increase the battery capacity. This is the perfect low-budget iPhone.
This SE 2020 5G Plus will be even more of a dud than the SE 2020 if there's no upgrade to the battery.

Yes, A15 can improve a lot. But there's no way it could compensate for the added drain of 5G if the battery stays at the SE 2020 mAh. No way.

Who would care for 5G and A15 if you can't look at the screen without the battery dying at launch.

*I'll also warn any SE 5G adopters that the SE 2020 has weird feedback distortion coming from its speakers when fast-charging. It will also randomly restart when charging, fast or slow. However, Apple does not acknowledge this issue despite it being present in many, many SE 2020. I'm not expecting Apple to have fixed this for the SE 5G.

So happy I returned my SE 2020. Such a bad buying decision.

M.O.S. from Apple

(more of same)

Frustrating for sure
