I use a 12 mini right now and will be quite curious to see that rumoured SE 2023 phone with a 5.7” screen and iPad-like TouchID in the power button. My only concern is that since the SE line so far has been all about reusing the old designs, this new SE would not fit this concept?
I don't understand who is propagating these fantasies about Apple doing new exciting designs for its' low-end, budget devices?

We are close to three iterations of iPhones SE and precisely all of them have been nothing more than old iPhones with a small set of upgrades priced at $399.

The next design "jump" for SEs will be to the Xr/11 design. But this will only happen after the mid and top flagship iPhones of that year jump to "FaceID 2nd Gen" or whatever upgraded biometric login method Apple comes up with to replace current "standard" FaceID.

SEs will always be at least a generation behind on most components, expect CPU and wireless. Sometimes there'l be a few more upgrades, like maybe the cameras. But never anything major or too similar to current flagships.

That's the concept and there will be no $399 iPhone if Apple goes against this and give SEs more and newer features.

What I wonder is if Apple is planning 3 iPhone SE models, a 4G lowest cost model, 5G low cost model, and possibly a bigger model based on the 3 rumored model numbers.

i'm tempted
my jet black iPhone 7 is getting rather long in the tooth ...
Don't do it. You'll be much better off with an 11 or a 12 or 13 mini

The camera on SE 2020 is terrible by 2022 standards and the battery in it makes it unusable.

Well, if you don't mind charging 2-3 times every day then the SE 2020 or SE 5G could be decent options. But they still lack so much.

I could never, never again.

Aren't those just the storage tiers, 64, 128, and 256? I'm pretty sure there's a model number for each storage size.

I'm also not sure the SE phones will ever go away from TouchID & Home button

It's very popular with certain customer demographics

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!

Also TouchID is king.
SE 2020 might as well be broken considering how much power it uses and how little capacity it's battery has.

SE 5G better have more mAh or else it's DOA.

However, I'm almost certain will also give the basemodel SE 5GB 128GB internal storage which will make tons of people upgrade from the paltry 64GB.

Seems a waste of time
……For you

For the more budget conscious consumer not wanting to spend over a ~$1k, some don’t need/want all the latest technology.

In times when inflation in the economy is affecting everybody, this is probably the best time for a phone like this, because they will be far more affordable for those who are looking to upgrade from an older Gen iPhone. (I.e-original SE, 8 or older, ect…)

With luck the iPhone 13 Mini (starting at 128Gb) will drop to £579 when the iPhone 14 series comes out in September. If it's staying around it does make sense that Apple wouldn't want to make a budget phone with a significantly bigger screen unless they believe it's not in the same market.

This might give a benchmark for an iPhone SE with 5G tech but with the same 'smaller' battery (1821mAh vs 2406mAh).

If Apple are sticking with the comparative battery sizes then could they eke sufficient battery life out of it by under-clocking the A15 CPU that goes into it just like in the iPad mini? Benchmarks suggest that the under clocked iPad mini A15 still trounces an A13 but it's unclear if it's energy efficient enough for Apple to claim their usual 13 hours of video playback and 40 hours of audio playback claimed for the 2020 SE.

I always thought the next iPhone SE would in fact use the Xr case (with FaceID) but of course Apple may have had second thoughts about getting rid of TouchID in current times given the compromises they appear to be making with iOS and the Apple Watch unlock facility.

Boring, but they work well. I downgraded from a 13 mini to the current SE. There really aren't any features on the 13 that I miss except 5g, so the new SE will work nicely for me if it does support 5g.

A major killer for me with the current iPhones with MagSafe is the fact they don't always work with QI chargers. Both mine and my wife's cars have built in QI charging neither would work with the 12 or 13 mini. Works fine with the SE.

I did something very similar.

I went from 13 Pro to 13 Mini and then finally settled on the SE2.

Money 100% did not play a role in my decision making. I simply wanted a small phone with bezels and Touch ID .

Yes, I wanted a phone with bezels. To me, one-handed use is easiest when there are bezels. Too many accidental screen touches when the screen takes up the entire space.

And don’t even get me started on Face ID. It’s been the most annoying experience in my 10 year history with iPhones, especially when wearing a mask. Even if the next update makes Face ID work with masks (just in time for most states to abandon mask mandates lol), I find that it’s far less reliable than Touch ID. That’s my experience.

Can’t wait for the new 5G SE to come out.

Nonsense rumors.

Most obvious thing is that this “5G new iPhone SE” will use the iPhone XR/11 chassis and not iPhone 6-8. Common sense.

It shouldn’t, but it is. I mean look at Apple’s iPhone 12 announcement, and it almost as if it was sponsored by Verizon… 😂

The carriers are pushing 5G phones to be available as cheap as possible to push people into upgrading their phones. This also benefits the phone maker, ie Apple. For the regular consumer, a larger number of something looks “better” than the smaller number that they have. Megapixel, 4G, 5G, 64bit, etc etc.

There’s also a logical reason in pushing 5G. Some carriers/countries are already planning/phasing out 3G. Pushing customers to 5G by offering cheaper 5G handsets helps that transition. Samsung, Xiaomi, etc have 5G models already at the $200 price point thanks to Dimensity 700. I’m sure the carriers are pushing Apple to have all 5G capable lineup.
Isn’t there a standard speed for 5G? The carriers should be sued for even promoting it as “nationwide.”

Verizon’s 5G UW should be available everywhere… Not just in the downtown section of cities. If 5G UW isn’t feasible because of interference, a strong 5G single on a different band should be available as a secondary measure, but still provide much faster speeds than what 4G did. I’m not understanding why standard 5G is slower than 4G speeds… It’s pathetic and embarrassing.

US carriers like Verizon bet on the ultra wideband 5G, but we now know the limitations of that. When they wanted to deploy sub6, they ended up having to piggyback existing 4G network, giving worst result.

I can't comment on other countries' implementation since I have not travelled abroad in the last 3 years, and 5G is still in its infancy in my country. But other countries bet on sub6 so I'm guessing the infrastructure would be built better to support it. Just guessing though.

You kinda gave it away with the long winded headline. Like saying, “What to expect in the upcoming season finale of GOT when Cerci and Jamie die and John Snow kills Dani after her dragons torch kings landing and the hound and the mountain fight to the death and lots of other people die and Bran becomes king.”

Coming from the SE1, I am kind of stuck between the rumored SE3 and the 13 Mini for my next iPhone.

My SE1 is getting older, so I would like to get something new. I really dislike the design of the SE2/Rumored SE3, and it is a little too big than what I want, but I like Touch ID and the cheaper (rumored) price is nice.

I like the design of the 13 Mini, and the size of it will be closer to the SE1, but think I will miss Touch ID.

I think I am leaning towards the iPhone 13 Mini.
I went from 6S to 12 mini, similar to 13 mini. The size is better than the huge 6, but yeah SE1 was the best. Lack of home button and Touch ID is a constant annoyance that I never go used to, and I don't like having to deal with 3.5mm adaptors.

It's almost as if you blatantly ignored my post.

I did not and obviously iPhone 8 is the closest to SE20-22 of the lot. The point I was trying to make is that this design is old and based on the same old iPhone 6 frame.

The next design "jump" for SEs will be to the Xr/11 design. But this will only happen after the mid and top flagship iPhones of that year jump to "FaceID 2nd Gen" or whatever upgraded biometric login method Apple comes up with to replace current "standard" FaceID.
Basically, I agree 100% with your post, but I'd like to add something regarding Face ID 2nd gen.

It already happened, I guess, if the next next SE will be modeled after Xr/11, even with the same Face ID module, it's already a second class citizen because Face ID with Mask works only with iPhone 12 and newer.

However, it can also be the case that together with the newer CPU, the Face ID component from the 11 will scan the eyes region for Face ID with Mask.

I hope they won't do this (FaceID), but a move to the side (TouchID on the powerbutton) for a larger screen, that would be fine for me.

Having multiple devices, I still like the physical home-button (could be smaller) and the absense of a flood-illuminator / lidar on my eyes.

I totally agree (I also have the SE1 at the moment).
