But the theory is the iMacs are waiting for a new GPU isn't it? Would they do a benchmark test without that new gpu or does that not make any difference to the testing?
GPU has no affect on geekbench so that could have been added later ( assuming apple already has the iMac in production)

I only use the web for this site and apple's. I just wish I could use an iMac to view it on rather than my iPhone or iPad. Hope it's with ML in a month. If not I'm gonna hunt down a refurb.

Sounds like there are a lot of us in the same boat then, been waiting for too long now not to wait until ML, if I knew back in December what I know now I would have got the 2011 but can't change the past, just bring out the damn update please!

With a new iPhone to purchase in October I would hope the bring the iMac out soon. Otherwise you can't get near my local apple store. Plus I'd rather not have to purchase both at the same time.

Actually, if back in December I knew that the new iMac is coming in July, I would still wait. But let's see if it actually comes out.

lol yea i posted that on the last page.

Actually if there is an imac refresh soon I dont think we will see standard SSD, if you look at the new mbp models, none have standard ssd and the prices for ssd BTO are still pretty much as expensive as they were before.
Maybe we will see some BTO options to 10k RPM drives, that would be enough. Though I only think that a GPU upgrade is the number one priority, RAM and CPU advances arent a big improvement to actually drive an update, just gpu, AMD or Nvidia, I dont care!

Agree. GPU, USB 3, and please, please, anti glare screen.

What if, in the room provided by removing the hard drive from the iMac, Apple put in mutiple Blade SSDs and RAIDed them via hardware in a way that was transparent to the user making it seem as though said iMac came with 1TB or 1.5TB, when instead it was just two mSATA Blades just RAIDed together. I feel like this, coupled with them probably removing the optical drive (much to my dismay), would make the machine, in its current form factor, less of a heat-sucking mess as there'd be much more room for cooling that gamer-laptop-PC GPU and that desktop CPU. Just a thought, I eagerly await it getting shot down. (And I seriously mean that.)

^ no shoot-down from me, I would love that!

And anyway, by this point most of the fuddy-duddy ODD lovers have done the "sensible" thing and bought ancient technology at current prices, so there's no reason Apple shouldn't do this!

Of course it has to be soon. Imagine if it were "later next year". 800+ days between iMac releases. Really?

The corroboration is good news, just the same though.

So, a lot of us have been waiting for the new iMac since april....here it is june. Are we now going to buckle under and start all over again slobbering about august or october or whatever month the new iMac might come out?

I've been waiting since last august. Most are expecting new imacs around the release of mountain lion (july) or sometime in 2013 as per this poll.

As a very long time mac user...i just feel beyond frustrated by all the cloak and dagger stuff regarding iMac's "impending" refresh. I have heard TONS about iPhone, iPad, iOS, and even a smidget about mac pro (as insulting as that was).....but not one single word about iMac has been uttered by Apple. Its a bunch of crap.

Apple could make me squeal like a school girl they announced;

- 27 inch iMac, same previous res.
- 7970m or the 680m GPU
- remove the chin from the front and make it match a Thunderbolt display (and yes, in height too!!)
- and add in the flash memory! (like I use my Mac to store files on it anyway lol)

Perfect beast right there!

I agree completley, exept.. YOU FORGOT THE IVY BRIDGE

how much performance difference are there gonna be between the new top of the line iMac (with the speculated specs) and the new top end retina MBP? retina MBP scored 12k on geekbench, thats pretty damn high and hard to beat right?

ok - perhaps reading too much between the lines here, but I've been thinking about it a little.

Tim Cook gets a mail from someone (can't remember exact details so I'll paraphrase) saying "what about your professional community, you don't update the iMac and the Pro 'upgrade' was disappointing." Tim comes back quickly with a reply along the lines of "au contraire, we love, love, love our professional chums and we have something awesome coming for you late next year."

This sparks a number of reactions and a hurried message from another Apple spokesperson to say that Tim was only referring to the MacPro when he talked about 2013.

So, this says to me, Tim knows there's something awesome coming in the next 12-18 months and while he was not specific about the model, he was more specific about the audience. Whatever is coming between now and then will not be as good, because Tim didn't think to say something more positive about the rest of this year.

I can imagine spokesperson saying to Tim, "everyone thinks that nothing's happening to iMac and MacPro until 2013 because you said so. What about that speed bump to the iMac" and Tim replying, "Yeah, you can't count that as an upgrade really. It's more like what we did for the Pro."

So, my considered opinion. Bump this year, redesign and range revamp in 2013 - perhaps even an amalgamation of the Pro and IMac lines somehow.

That's how I read into it as well.

Ok I remember some months ago there were news about the iMac having an upgrade sometime between June-July because some sort of intel-chip, so what happened to that? Isn't the CPU on the laptops different from the Desktops?

As best as we can reason, the Intel CPUs are readily available, but we're stuck waiting for top end Nvidia GPU, which will start shipping in other computers in late June or early July.
