After effects runs quite well on my 2011 iMac so I'm not in any hurry for an upgrade

Is that so? What FPS/Realtime are you getting on a 20 layer project using a 2600K CPU and 16GB RAM? Still doesn't cut it for me and for this very reason, I may move to the Mac Pro. But if your one/two layer project is flying in realtime, then by all means, enjoy.

[QUOTEwhy be a guinea pig on new chips/redesign? I prefer to buy after a year or so[/QUOTE]

This is my concern plus im not concerned with any of the additions that may or may not materialize. The current machine does what I need and I need it now!

I'm in the market to upgrade now from a 2006 iMac for video and audio editing with FCP X and Reaper.

I've researched the MacBook Pro, the Mac Pro and the iMac. The 27" iMac i7 seems to be the best option for me but I'm interested to know if it's worth waiting for the new model to get a better price on the old model?

Are Apple likely to drop prices significantly ( i.e. enought to warrant waiting) or will they sell all old stock before releasing a new one? Or am I just being tight?

Prices do drop on release of Apple new iMacs and are sold refurbisbed by them. I had previously bought all my previous iMacs from Apple. The current one I bought yesterday would ic cost me £1550 at apple. I instead purchased from Amazon saved £100 & bought my ram from crucial, Ordered AppleCare from apple website. All in all I saved around £250 compared to buying from Apple.

Some feel the need to have latest, due to future os upgrades etc. I'm happy with my purchase & will have no regrets when new ones are released. Besides you can't/should never wait for technology cos you'll always be waiting, that's what I've learned.

Good luck with what ever you decide to do.

I'm no after effects noob, I sometimes have projects with like 10 pre comps with up to 50 or more layers.. I run ram preview at half res skipping every other frame as I work in 60 fps

Fair enough, but I wish I could run it at full preview with it running in realtime. Do you know what this would require?

I wouldn't really know tbh but my computer can handle it but I would rather have a quicker ram preview than a higher res preview. It also obviously depends on how complicated your comp is and everything. Mograph I don't think would be a problem. Then again a Mac pro flies through the ram preview no matter what :). In contrast I know some people who run after effects on an entry level MacBook pro or evn the new MacBook air. U may not be familiar with previewing in ae but it's loads better to preview your projects by ram previewing rather than just hitting spacebar. Shortcut for ram preview is "0" on the numerical keypad. I would upgrade your ram to 12 gb or higher for heavy ae use tho no matter which machine you use

I have 16GB of RAM and do know that about previewing, but thank you for the input and advice.

- Better SSD/HDD hybrid integration
- Better integration with Time Capsule, file transfer speed is slow on my TC. This probably would improve with the new WiFi spec AC
- A lot of folks would be able to play Crysis at full resolution at 60 fps. The CPU/GPU performance should strive for this
- HDD user accessible bay

Uuhh...
- Nothing else to add because iMac is for the most part a beautifully designed machine

Intel has leaked the Ivy Bridge specs on their website.

I see no 2.5ghz i5 quadcore listed.

Will Apple implement the 2.3ghz as the low end or the 2.7ghz for their entry level iMac?

The Turbo mode on Ivy Bridge is also lower on the 2.7 than the Sandy Bridge 2.5. Current 3.3 - New 3.2

If you look at turbo mode between the 2.7 models, Ivy Bridge went down from 3.7 to 3.2.

Cache is the same.

Well, I reckon...

...it will come with no keyboard and no mouse. When not in use, it will stand like the current iMac does. When you want to use it, it will slide down on its stand and adopt a nearly horizontal position on the desk in front of you, same angle as a standard keyboard. Like the MacBook Air, most of the components will be at the top of the main body, so the bottom edge/bezel of the new iMac will be about 5mm thick on the desk. Screen will be touch sensitive and the keyboard will pop up a-la iOS devices. Screen will be 30". Standard multitouch actions will be supported as well as a new arms-stretched 10-finger pinch to empty the trash! No ODD. Base config will be 8GB which will be spread across four memory slots (4x 2GB - something Apple excels at) expandable to 32GB. Space for twin hard drives AND SSD. 2GB Graphics (Base), 4GB BTO. It will have solar panels built into the screen to cut down on the power required to run it. And it will have four-wheel-drive.

GHz isn't everything. The internal design of the processor will also affect speed. It's quite possible that the 2.3GHz IvyBridge will be as fast or faster than the 2.5GHz IvyBridge.

We'll have to wait for real benchmarks to find out.

CHIPMAKER Intel has inadvertently leaked details of its upcoming Ivy Bridge processors in a sales flipbook uploaded to its website.
Intel's much delayed Ivy Bridge processors are expected to tip up in the second quarter sporting the firm's tri-gate transistor technology. Details of the chips had been relatively scant, until that is the firm decided to upload a sales flipbook, which details what appear to be most of its third generation Core i5 processors.
According to Intel's slides there are only modest frequency bumps, with the quad-core Core i5-2570 and Core i5-2570K topping the range with speeds of 3.4GHz and 3.8GHz in Turbo mode. The addition of the 'K' suffix signifies Intel HD 4000 graphics, while the Core i5-3570 plods along with Intel HD 2500 graphics.
Like Chipzilla's Sandy Bridge Core i5 chips, the Ivy Bridge Core i5 range will be all quad-core chips with 6MB of cache that lack Hyperthreading, with one exception, the Core i5-3470T, which is a dual-core Hyperthreaded processor with 3MB of cache. Previously the 'T' suffix was added to signify a 35W TDP chip, though this was not confirmed on the leaked slide.
Intel's Ivy Bridge line might be late, however AMD's Bulldozer chips have yet to really push Intel's Sandy Bridge range. AMD on the other hand will promote its superior GPU technology in Trinity Fusion processors to try to counter Intel's raw CPU power, though it might have to wait until October to show its hand.

if we go with the idea that an iMac will be available in june 2012 and speculate that the 2013 iMac will use the Haswell CPU is it really worth to buy the 2012 iMac if say 8 months later it is replaced with a much faster and energy efficient CPU?

Oh know, get ready for the hard hat.

Seriously you can't keep waiting for tecnology just buy when you need it, Playing the waiting game leaves many disappointed. I never waited i just bought a iMac 2 days ago. Fact is i know sandy bridge is perfected and has know problem, in my eyes Ivy has some sort of issues hence the delay. Its not like this will be my last mac, so any redesign will see me in the future.

At this time I am holding out because USB 3.0 and bluetooth 4.0 will probably be added to the 2012 iMac which will prolong my use of the iMac also Apple will probably support it longer then current generation models. I'm also hoping for a redesign chassis but no rush for that. I also want the EDU promo.

I'm guessing iDock. A docking station for your iOS devices to be charged and output to a huge multi touch display.

See mac pro.

A decent graphics card these days takes up 2 expansion slots. How is that going to fit in an imac an be cooled properly?

Chop the gpu in half and stick it on each side where the fans are?

I DID say i understood why the iMac uses those components.

A very valid and reasonable explanation as to why you and many others have decided to wait on the new model. I'm also looking forward to Wi-fi AC. I'd wait as well for these things you mention. But I'm really hoping for a redesign. Not that I have anything against the current design, but its always an event to see what new technical feat Apple can do in the aesthetics department.

I understand your reason for waiting but USB 3 didn't mean anything for me, i'll purchase a thunder bolt external, Bluetooth 4.0 means nothing to me(Not having a dig) considering the late 2009 brought the current design, i can't really see a redesign just yet, but you never know, the iPad is going into its 3rd year with same design the iMac is not even 3 years in its current design. Macbook pro & iPhone to me will see redesign this year, Apple needs to have things to do next year uno lol, if they release everything in one year it won't be good for the future, thats my take on things

Im going to wait until i can no longer wait (off this earth) before i purchase my iMac, oh I wont be here lol. Apple has people in a situation, I'm glad I'm not in over their products.

Apple has become like a drug/vanity thing, if you don't have latest model you're not in fashion, You do know after 7-9 months Apple will release a new model and the sheep will give apple their wallet again for minimal increase. Not having a go at you, just saddens me that the majority of people that just browse web/ use Facebook will wait for a new imac that wont speed up their internet use. While professional will buy when they need it as they need to get that money!!

Is there any posibility Apple present a new iMac on 7th March? They will (at least we hope) present iPad3 and Im waiting the new model but I cannot wait two months.
Anyone knows it?

Not likely, as (despite all the DigitTimes FUD) the Ivy Bridge CPUs still are on track for April. They've been in fab since January. The SBE Xeons went to fab in December and now we've got release confirmation. Disregard the rumor mill and stick with what sparse information we do get right from the horse's mouth and I would expect new iMacs in mid-April.

Okay, maybe, just maybe if someone was upgrading every year I could possibly understand this, but even then, if they have hard earned cash to spend and like Apple products then I see no harm in it.

In my case, I have the first generation 27 iMac and I am due for an upgrade, so call me an iSheep.....
