If you were talking about the industry trend toward more tablets and laptops then yes . . . I see Apple turning the Mac Pro into a real niche machine if not just axing it all together after one more or two more revisions.

I would hate that.

Yes I was, as desktops become more niche overall. More people buying laptops, and tablets. I bought an ipad and that negated the need for a laptop so I am going for the power and longevity I need in buyng an iMac. I just wish the new one's woukd hurry up ;)

I'm starting to think there will be a new keyboard which could in turn point to a overall redesign.

Amazon (UK) has neither the wired or wireless keyboards in stock (some resellers do) and they havent had them for sometime. That perhaps suggests the discontinuation of those particular models.

Then we will see the new Apple keyboard copiers 1 month later too lol. Geez Apple sets the standards for everything these days :apple:

So 4-core Ivy Bridge i5/i7, 8GB of RAM, 7xxxM GPU, choice of huge HD or not so huge SSD.

That's basically it, right?

with bluetooth 4.0 and OS X mountain Lion

i hope not, i just want the iMac to be refreshed without Mountain Lion. if we wait for that update, it will take months, heck then we will be looking for a june/july release. the hardware update atm is just fine for most of us here, a simple $30 upgrade wont bother much.

I very much agree. And for that matter, I'm very happy with just plain old Snow Leopard on my iMac. I don't wanna loose my precious spaces!!!

But since I have the 2011 model, I guess I'm not due for an upgrade for a long time... ;)

Hope at least 10.7.4 has been released at that time...
Don't see myself using 10.8 from the start and I have some doubts about 10.7.3.

Agreed on both counts. I too am waiting for a maxed out iMac, and I also see the trend toward towers becoming niche, and more expensive to own.

I don't doubt that the Mac Pro will continue, and I will wait for an updated to it before sinking $ into an iMac, but I have a feeling that I will be 1) unimpressed with the update and 2) unimpressed with what I get for the price.

From an article i was reading

We just received an invite from Intel regarding a "major" product launch event which will take place on the 6th of March in a "central London" location; the product is most probably the "tick" alter ego of Sandy Bridge, i.e, Ivy Bridge.

The email mentions that it will be "one of the company's key product launches of the year, featuring demos and keynotes by Intel executives and other leading industry figures".

Ivy Bridge is the codename for the 22nm die shrink iteration of the Sandy Bridge microarchitecture - which stands at 32nm - and the first to use tri-gate transistors which were showcased back in May 2011 on an Ivy Bridge prototype.

I'd want everything on the SSD as why have your os on and then have to edit video on a HD or even access large iTunes library? I negates the need for an SSD

Care to link that article then? Because everything points at April release, including Intel's internal roadmaps.

I really respect your opinion an views on this forum, don't mean to be a pest, but could you give me your views on when we are likely to see new iMacs.

The site seems legit. It might be something else than Ivy Bridge, though (maybe something regarding Medfield?).

EDIT: March 6th means CeBIT so we are probably talking about Sandy Bridge-EP here. Reports about March release have been floating for months.

I think April-May is a safe bet, June at the latest. By then, we will have Ivy Bridge and AMD 7xxxM graphics.

Sure it'd help, but programs benefit the most. Also, when you have 100 GB of programs, fitting them on an SSD is likely cost-effective, but say you have 5 TB of video - putting all those on SSDs is far more expensive.

And you don't need an iTunes library on SSDs. The bit rate is so slow, maybe 1.5 Mbit/sec at most if you have lossless. Even typical HD video can easily work off normal hard drives. It's only when you start playing around with crazy stuff like 10-bit uncompressed or 4k ProRes 422 that you need speeds above a normal HDD.

Cheers for the reply. I was hopeing around that time frame, hope it's not June though. I need a computer but can't bring myself into buying this current genaration, don't get me wrong it's a great machine but being so long into its cycle is the main reason.

Once again thanks for your take on things.

The iMac 2012

Can anyone give me any information on the release date of the new iMac? And what is expected with the new version?

Thanks

Craig Mac

I'd buy the new iMac in a heartbeat if it had a matte screen (or at least as an option) but sadly that doesn't look like happening ... :(
