...it will come with no keyboard and no mouse. When not in use, it will stand like the current iMac does. When you want to use it, it will slide down on its stand and adopt a nearly horizontal position on the desk in front of you, same angle as a standard keyboard. Like the MacBook Air, most of the components will be at the top of the main body, so the bottom edge/bezel of the new iMac will be about 5mm thick on the desk. Screen will be touch sensitive and the keyboard will pop up a-la iOS devices. Screen will be 30". Standard multitouch actions will be supported as well as a new arms-stretched 10-finger pinch to empty the trash! No ODD. Base config will be 8GB which will be spread across four memory slots (4x 2GB - something Apple excels at) expandable to 32GB. Space for twin hard drives AND SSD. 2GB Graphics (Base), 4GB BTO. It will have solar panels built into the screen to cut down on the power required to run it. And it will have four-wheel-drive.

You guys are talking way over my knowledge level however I love technology and I am canceling my order of the iMac. If they improve on the screen I think its worth the wait.

There is no rumor mentionning improvements for the display on the iMac.

Plz show me how it will be made thiner, look at the iMac internals, if super drive is taken out maybe, but the iMac is thin as it is. Any thinner and dispite Ivy Bridge being cooler than some Sandy bridges , there would likely be more heat issues.

And please explain to me how each version of the iMac became thinner as time went on.

As I said show me with words what will be removed in current iMac and how will the current iMacs become thinner. Ram slots, where would they go? You do not that its small, if made thinner doubt 4 slots will still exsits What, you think the iMac will be as thin as Samsung tv's? Never. You do no the iMacs carry computer components right? It's not a tv

I wonder what people thought back about TVs in the 60s, 70s, 80s. Surely no flat screens could ever exist.

You also do realize an iPad and an iPhone now do many computing tasks that once only belonged to large beige desktop towers, right?

Try to use a little imagination beyond the span of 5 years.

Edit Ok, if you want my honest opinion, yes they can remove the ODD. They can switch to blade SSDs. They can switch to OLED displays (maybe not right away), etc. I don't think anyone thought Apple could shrink the Mac Mini any more than they did, but they did. They didn't just shave millimeters off. They cut the bloody thing in half. And I'm talking about the 2010 Mac Mini WITH the ODD. Genius engineering can go a long way, and if anyone can pull of thinner computers better, its Apple. The bottom line is, its possible, even if it goes against a lot of user's wishes.

Are you telling me I should upgrade?

Do not abuse me. All what you have said I know. Fact is iMac is a stationary power computer. Yea it will likely get thinner. Not this year though. The iPad & iPhone are know where as powerful as a iMac. Yet you have the cheek to talk about 5 year. Just cos your dream is thinner iMac with touch screen don't mean it's going to happen.

Abuse you? I think not. Just putting things into perspective, as its always has been: the miniaturizing of technology, which is a constant in history. Also, where did I ever say I wanted a touch iMac?

The Macbook Air is not as powerful as the Macbook, but bye bye Macbook. And now we have rumors of the Air inheriting the AX processor? Can you imagine that? If it ever happens, the Air will get even thinner than it is today. What happened to the "power" argument? Air was weaker than a Macbook, weaker than the Pros, yet it outsells all these models. I can see Apple going in two directions for the iMac, with the 27" going into the pro market, but the 21.5" getting smaller and thinner where power is not as important, and obviously that market has proven to be a huge hit for Apple.

I really hope Apple doesn't remove the ODD this year. I'm realizing I'm not ready to see it go. I'm currently only using an Air, and there are times I miss having the drive. Having one in the iMac would just be so much more convenient; burning CDs, watching DVDs, etc.

Don't expect a redesign please. Just look at iPad event today. Apple focus is iOS devices and New thiner Macbook pro.

Oh boy!

I can't wait... I am trying to learn html, css, java etc coding on a 15' win7 laptop and it is driving me mad!! still trying to decide on the 21.5 or 27

personally I hope for the following
1. New design - lose some of the chin.
2. SDD + HDD - 64gb sdd for apps and os 1tb hdd for the rest
3. Redesigned keyboard
4. Redesigned, ergonomic mouse
4. April release!!!

I'm inclined to disagree. It looks like designs don't stick around much longer than two generations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IMac#Timeline_of_iMac_models

If you consider the Aluminum iMac the first and the Aluminum Unibody the second, of this design, we might be in for some type of redesign.

Or, if you consider the two Aluminum designs as completely separate, that still would suggest a new design every couple of years, if Apple keeps the trend, starting with the upgrade from the Aluminum iMac to the Aluminum Unibody after only 2 years.

Plus, I don't know that IB and USB 3.0 are big enough selling points. I guess I'm just excited for the possibility that Apple might come out with yet another stunningly beautiful thing we haven't seen yet, something to go along with the other changes we've seen in the Mac lineup (and the future Mac lineup with the upcoming MacBook Pro) and something to make Mac growth even more strong and record-breaking.

Decided that it's time to upgrade my mac. Currently on a 2008 MacBook Pro core 2 duo and it's getting too slow and is making weird noises.

Wanted to get a i5 27" iMac (would be a huge step from my MBP) But now im reading from here that a new model is around the corner but also that no major update is expected.

Does anyone have any hard facts about the upcoming models? or is this all just speculation? How foolish would it be to go and get an iMac TODAY?

It's all speculation. Not even any leaks of possible upgrades or specs.
Usually, if there is a major redesign or feature, there are leaks that precede the release.

My speculation is we'll get a CPU bump in speed and/or i7 as the standard base CPU. May be USB3 added.
I don't see anything major coming down the pipe this year.

*I'm on the fence myself about getting the current iMac as well since I currently have a PC with an AMD X2 CPU that has no problems with recording/mixing usage with Pro Tools. This is already a 3 year old PC but it keeps up with my current demands & shows no signs of sluggish performance.

Since I don't really need it right now, I'm playing the waiting game just to see if we get any leaks in the next month or so.

How foolish would it be to go and get an iMac TODAY?
Depends on your needs?
What will the computer be used for? Web browsing, word processing, games, etc.

For most, the current platform/CPU offerings will be adequate and good for the next 5 years easily.
It's when you are using CPU intense SW/tasks, and upgrade annually, which taxes the CPU more that you might have to upgrade in 2-3 years.

Usually, if the SW is working fine & you skip the upgrades/patches, the PC will run smoothly.

As time goes on, it seems the trend is:
Release OS update, hog more CPU/Chipset/Memory resources
Release OS patch, hog more CPU/Chipset/Memory resources
Release SW update, hog more CPU/Chipset/Memory resources
Release SW patch, hog more CPU/Chipset/Memory resources

I can see doing some of those if NECESSARY to fix bugs/performance that affect your SW & you notice them but for the most part, the majority can usually do with out upgrades/patches.

Most people do upgrades/patches because the vendor tells them they need it or they want to have the latest release but in reality, if it ain't broke, DON'T upgrade/patch.

Raving mad. It's now been the longest time on the same iMac (at the SAME price since it came out) in 4 years. Seeing as each model is the same price for its whole life, it makes no sense to buy a Mac any time other than when it first comes out, unless you really need it now.

I'm actually in the same boat as you. 2008 MBP C2D 2.4 GHz, 4GB RAM. Looking forward to upgrading to a quad core iMac with SSD and 16GB of RAM, as I'm sick of the beach balling.

ok, im quite sure now that i'll wait for the new model.

??? 310 days
05/2011 280 days
07/2010 280 days
10/2009 231 days
03/2009 309 days
04/2008 265 days

Exactly why its a good idea to wait. The iMac is one of Apple's best selling computers. They won't drag this wait out anymore than they need to once Ivy Bridge drops.
