Macbook pro down - now what?

So my 15" macbook pro purchased 3 years ago died with a drink of water. Luckliy, purchased at Best Buy with the accidental plan, I have a hefty gift card. With most focus into photo and video updating, i am gonna do an iMac. HOWEVER - reading through this thread, seeing that the buyers guide says do NOT buy, and seeing all the potential thoughts of the new iMac - and also Mountain Lion. How long do you think I will be waiting? 1 person said fall, but I have a feeling that soon, there will be a press announcement of new imacs, with a sneak peek into the developments of mountion lion and the guarntee of the free upgrade to anyone who buys the new imac with just lion on it.

Any thoughts?

Touchscreen desktops are an ergonomic nightmare. Your arms would get so sore from trying to use your computer like that. Not to mention you would need to keep a bottle of screen cleaner next to you all the time.

I vote no touchscreen on iMacs... ever

Touch screen is just an unbelievably unworkable idea ... It may look cool on sci-fi films for a brief glimpse but lets see
You're really into some work and the screen is getting more and more greasy and sweaty and SLOW and in the end you just have stop and clean it ... Then you end up doing something else that's cropped up as you pass ... Then you get back to what you are doing on the pooter and the flow has gone ... Not a good idea
Also ... Have you ever worked with your hands on something flat in front of you ? ... Like painting at an easel ? ... Your arms soon start aching ... Then hurting ... If you were doing this every day you would develop RSI of the whole arm in a very short time
Like KK said ... It just isn't a very good idea
Sorry to tell you but almost all 911/Public safety/Utility/Airline dispatch centers are moving toward touchscreen.
Makes button/line/channel selections easier & they have the keyboard though for typing.

The people there also do not appear to have anchor arms. :p

Those mockups I saw earlier. I liked em. However make it black and white models. BUT skip aluminum completely to the front. And make the glass go out to the edges over the entire front. White mode with black Apple logo and vice versa. Also move the RAM slots to the right side of the Apple logo. And make 2 HDD/SSD slots to the left side. Probably 2.5" drive slots since thickness could be a problem.

Then the rest is probably given eh? Ivy Bridge, ATI 7000 series or newer nVidia will probably be available aswell. Bluetooth 4.0, USB 3 (Not needed but it's time).

Has anyone mentioned a ceramic enclosure with the same sandblasted finish of the 2011 models? I thought ceramic conducts and dissipates heat even better and the rough sandblasted finish would increase surface area.

Touchscreen computers are an eventuality. Sorry to blow that "unworkable" idea down, but anything easier to use will make it. The problem the naysayers have is getting their heads around the computer SITTING LOWER AND CLOSER so it is like an Intuos or Wacom tablet/screen. The keyboard won't vanish, though, nor the mouse, but they will be special devices for special input.

That said, we won't see them this year or next. The computer market just can't figure out how to make it work in a way they BELIEVE people will buy or use. It's like the iPad--they couldn't believe anyone would want it, but they threw it out there and instant success.

People said the iPhone and subsequent iPad would be COMPLETE FLOPS because you need a bottle of glass cleaner. Um... wtf? Grease balls. Your 1% of pit stainers and junk food overeaters need not buy. Both items were instant successes and the touch screen iMacs will be as well.

There will come, soon, a reliance on voice to direct computers. That won't be this year or next, either. Give it a few years or half-a-decade and these things will work via voice control. DON'T PANIC! Keyboards and mice won't disappear. If I had voice control to the Mac, I'd probably drop half my keyboard use due to letter dictation.

30" iMac this year? No way. Retina (or hi-res) screens are a maybe; they'll probably show up next time, and come in smaller sizes. I'd rather have a 24" retina-type screen than a 30" biggie (which I presently use).

I'm trying to imagine a 27" iMac screen, sitting a roughly 10 degree angle, probably starting about 3-6" off the desk (and, what, 4" thick?). And I don't have the foggiest idea of how I'd use it. If I'm close enough to reach it comfortably, then I'm too close for my eyes to take in the whole screen at once.

There's room for the Transformer-type ~10-13" tablet/laptops. I don't see something iMac-sized in touchscreen, particularly if it's also meant to be used with a keyboard. Something like a Microsoft Surface is a different animal entirely - it's designed with a different purpose in mind, and it serves that purpose and no other.

Touchscreen computers if they do come will be flat on the desk ... Basically a big iPad and doable now but not commercial ... I would expect voice controlled machines to come along before we see them
iPhones are nothing more than a very popular fashion accessory ... Most people just use it as a phone/music player/camera ... Just like any other phone ... Too small and fiddly to do anything else of any importance ... And plenty of other phones do all the same things anyway ... But they are pretty and very fashionable :)
iPads are just a laptop with a touchscreen built in so its all in one ... There's nothing particularly clever there either ... But once again they are very pretty and fashionable
I love Macs ... Have only used Macs for over a decade ... But lets be realistic about all this shall we :))

Except it's not easier, which is why it is very unlikely it won't make it. If you can prove how to successfully wield a 27" iMac on your desk without arm fatigue through prolounged use, let's hear it. Don't forget you aren't moving your arm across a 9.7" screen. You're moving it across a massive 27" screen, a display roughly three times the size.

I can't tell if that's all sarcasm or not

Roughly 3 times the diagonal distance.. so roughly 9 times the surface area.

Thank you for the math correction  But it proves the point that touch screen on iMacs don't make things easier. The user is going to spend more energy doing tasks than it would have to simply flick your wrist with a mouse or to move your fingers a few inches across a trackpad.

Touch makes sense for a device you hold in your hand, like the iPad. But it makes much less sense for something statuary, like a desktop. A gesture-based system seems more comfortable and practical (think Minority Report).

I would love to have a touch screen iMac in the traditional position. It would be wonderful with real work products like Adobe's Create Suites. Sure, it won't replace the other input devices but it would be a nice addition.

The component options have been discussed a lot, but I do like the one previous poster's suggestion of a Pro version of the iMac. That would be great as long as it does not mean the demise the Mac Pro.

Screen Resolution. Retina would be great for both work creation and content consumption.

Throwing my hat in there for the group that is eagerly awaiting the refresh of the iMac. I'm on an early 2011 27" 2.8 GHz i5 with 16GB right now, and it's damn fast. Drooling over a new one with an Ivy Bridge and SSD...

May have been answered... All I want to know is if this is supposed to be a major refresh or a minor refresh? What are the chances it is completely redesigned versus looking the same?

Edit: Oh holy **** haven't been here in years and just looked at my sig, made me laugh!

No idea. Everybody seems pretty split 50/50 on if it's a major refresh or or minor. Every one does seem to think that whatever it is, it will be here by May. Personally, i'm guessing mid to late April.

My early 2008 MBP is taking a dump. I am maxed out on RAM and I just need more power. Im definitely getting an iMac, but I am ready to buy now. Just waiting for the new ones next month to see if the internals change at all? I want it to be easier to swap in a 3rd party SSD. Right now, you have to take the whole damn thing apart and possibly use double sided tape. I'd like to see if they make it Plug and play... Plus, if I don't like the upgrade, I can just get the mid 2011 model at a discount :)

I'am hoping they don't drop like the optical drive like those rumours floating around about the macbook losing the od to get more slimmer. To get a new mac and than have to buy a external optical drive would deface the macs all in one purpose.

I'm not sure how much slimmer they could go without being plagued by huge heating problems, they could remove some of these issues if they moved the power brick from inside the iMac to the outside.

Slimmer?

I don't get this trend of slimmer and slimmer casings. If heat is going to be a problem in slim casings, I'd rather have an half inch extra. We are sitting in front of the iMac, it will not hurt my eyes if it didn't get slimmer...

An iMac laying flat is really a terrible idea.
Concerning ergonomics laptops are bad enough for our necks, the position is not that good.
A flat iMac would be even worse, looking down for hours with a bent neck... This is just ridiculous.

Im agree. You dont carry the iMac in a bag and dont see its side 24h per day. I prefer it will be cooler and work better if it is 0,5 cms thicker
