3 things for me

  1. More memory capability - With memory so cheap I want at least 64mb
  2. Better Resolution Screen - Retina display
  3. Ability for 2nd internal hard drive - SSD with large disk ability

Rest of it I am happy with could have more USB ports but with internal hard drive that would free up the spare socket. CPU seems ok for me if they were to upgrade that and graphics i think heat would become a problem and it so nice and quiet would be a shame to ruin that.

I'll be keeping a close eye on the new ones.

Sorry, I should have been more specific as to say that there is no way they would make a 24" model due to the fact that the only 16:9 resolution they could put would be 1920x1080. And since they already have a 21" model with that res, they probably won't make 2 different screen sizes with the same res for the iMacs.:p

----------

Sorry, i missed the second part. Well with SSD the main benefits noticed would be in loading times as well as writing times. So let's say you open safari with a standard HDD it probably loads in about 5 to 6 seconds. And SSD takes about 1 to open.

As for creating files and installing something on to the SSD, it drastically cuts down the time. What took me about 11 min to convert a 720p 3:30 min vid on a 5400 rpm HDD now takes a little less than 3 min to do after I upgraded. Mind you that the CPU is the major factor in speed though :p when it comes to converting, but when I reinstalled lion onto my SSD after switching, what normally takes an hour to do, took half the time to install.

Hope that helps again :)

Great, thanks....big help.

Ok...Ok...What if...

Ok...Ok...What if...

What if Apple's decided to get rid of the iMac in the classical sense?

Imagine they've "revolutionized" the MacBookPro to be as strong, if not stronger, than the current iMac?

So you buy yourself a MacbookPro but if you want a dektop, you buy yourself a new Apple screen that comes with a dock like feature built-in to it place your MacbookPro in!

A little far fetched perhaps...but not entirely infeasible. One can dream. :p

A very good point, although if they do go for Retina displays, they would have more flexibility in resolutions as they will be new resolutions any way. If they don't go for Retina with the next revision (I think Retina is coming, but uncertain of when), then you are almost certainly right.

Don't worry, they'll come with at least 64 MB, i promise. :p

I expect no more optical disc drive.

I also expect it to ship after April 2012.

I really hope they do still have the optical drive because I don't want to pay for the Super Drive. I will need the optical drive, and since it's not a laptop, there's no need to get rid of it.

Anyone who wants a rough estimate of a date in which my opinion that Apple will announce/release the new iMac, I have a guess:

Since we are over 50 days past average release increment of the iMac, it could essentially be any day, but Apple isn't necessarily like that. At first I thought they would release it Sunday, April 8th 2012 because that's the release date for the Intel Ivy Bridge desktop processors. But then I thought, when was the last time Apple released new products over the weekends? I am about a year old Apple fan, so I am not 100% sure of the days of the week that Apple usually releases new products, but using the day the new iPad was released, maybe the new iMac will be released on the 11th of April (Wednesday).

All the iMacs on Amazon UK have a fair few quid knocked off the price currently. Which means that either they're wanting to clear out any remaining stock, or they're feeling really happy and want to spread some Macintosh love

The 27" TB display has also had about £150 knocked off the normal price too.

Whatever the case, I'm sure the new ones will be here within the next 6 weeks or so. Hopefully.

Sure there is. To make iMacs thinner, or to put more useful stuff inside. Disk drives aren't really needed anymore, and more and more people will see that once they don't have it or miss it.

What does thinner get you performance wise?
It sure doesn't dissipate heat better.

i want the new iMacs to hover above my desk..... i heard rumors that is being worked on!

uggg seriously another thread like this.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but me personally really needs it because I use the Sims 3 with like 4 expansion packs and since Origin is not Mac compatible I won't be able to install them w/o a disk.

Apple does a lot of things that are not for performance. changing the appearance is a pretty big deal with apple products, and sometimes it is form over function with apple computers.

Refresh overdue...

iMac touch. They have been been building the touch ecosystem for a long time, patenting the technology, and developing iOS to accommodate it.

I have a feeling there is no way yet that apple would do that.

Although with Steve jobs gone who knows what the rest of the crew feel about touchscreens but I still highly doubt they'd do that.

Touchscreen desktops are an ergonomic nightmare. Your arms would get so sore from trying to use your computer like that. Not to mention you would need to keep a bottle of screen cleaner next to you all the time.

I vote no touchscreen on iMacs... ever

The hinge that brings the screen to a slight incline on the desk of the user has already been patented by Apple and with the success of the iPad it kinda only makes sense to adapt the ecosystem throughout their line up. People want to be more interactive with their computers.

Think about photo, video, or sound editing directly to the source. It would cater to their strongest base while providing a gimmick for casual users. All the haters would moan for about a month until they ended up owning one and subsequently call it a revolution.

Agreed.

Maybe all the people requesting this feature are physical therapists wanting to drum up business. :p Seems like a dream come true for people who would treat repetitive motion injuries.

No Touchy Wouchy

Touch screen is just an unbelievably unworkable idea ... It may look cool on sci-fi films for a brief glimpse but lets see
You're really into some work and the screen is getting more and more greasy and sweaty and SLOW and in the end you just have stop and clean it ... Then you end up doing something else that's cropped up as you pass ... Then you get back to what you are doing on the pooter and the flow has gone ... Not a good idea
Also ... Have you ever worked with your hands on something flat in front of you ? ... Like painting at an easel ? ... Your arms soon start aching ... Then hurting ... If you were doing this every day you would develop RSI of the whole arm in a very short time
Like KK said ... It just isn't a very good idea

Something being patented doesn't mean it's a good idea.

Ok, great, it's got a hinge. So I bend it down so it's in a comfortable arm position. And then what? I can't see the darn screen since it's roughly planar with the desk (and still probably 12-18" up), and/or I need to look down (and get a crick in my deck that I pay my chiropractor to get out), and/or I need to stand up to use it.

People want to be more interactive with their computers.

Not as much as you think; not as the default way of using it, and not often enough to make sense introducing it in a consumer-oriented product. There are certain specific scenarios where this makes sense (starship piloting comes to mind), but word processing? Email? Web Surfing? Even games on a non-portable device? No.
