There's just no way that Apple is going to give the user THREE hdd to contend with. Two is confusing enough as it is. Honestly, I wish the OS would just handle it all for me and make the two drives look like one and put the important stuff on the SSD and the photos on the mechanical.

I'm surprised that's not already the case. While Apple is working to kill off the file system does anyone know if SSD+HDD management is easier in ML?

Question about SSD

Ok, when you order a iMac from the apple store with a HDD and a SSD which drive is the os loaded on? I would imagine the ssd but am not sure....

How does the optical drive contribute to the chin?

I'm sure it doesn't, other than the fact that it takes up more space. I'm assuming that if it were removed, there would be free space that was not there before. Throw in some engineering and I'd think they could use that space to reduce some of that chin.

Seems like most of the chin on the iMac is from the speakers. The Apple thunderbolt was able to reduce the chin although overall it has less components. I'm hoping for a thunderbolt display like iMac.

EDIT maybe the new iMacs are currently on the production line in Thunderbolt display casing.

I am sure others have said this before but making 1TB ATA (7200 rpm) standard on the entry level iMac is my only requirement! It would be nice to be able to dual it with some SSD but at the price (currently £480 as an option) I can probably live without it and make do with the advantages it offers on my MBA.

As a secondary wish I would also like to be able to upgrade the machine to the i7 processor (although I doubt this will be the case) which would taken the price to £1,160. Otherwise, the cheapest way to get an i7 processor on the iMac means forking out £1,409 minimum (£1,569 if you also want to upgrade the RAM to 8GB; which you would!).

The ram is also in the "chin"

oo that would be great. Getting very anxious, the wait wont be as bad if we get some good hints on parts , dates or supplies.

No im not going to be buying 2011 model.

I still hold to May.

the last time I was looking so carefully was the 2011 MBA refresh and if memory serves me right, components and features (like the back-lit keyboard) started floating around a couple of weeks before the release...

Lets look at other 'indicators'

(1) Bespoke spec shipping dates slip - No (have been checking and certainly in the UK can get most specs with 1 day lags)
(2) Inventory shortages at 3rd party sellers reported around the community - No, the likes of Amazon still hold plenty of stock
(3) Rumours of release date start getting more and more specific - No (certainly not that I have seen in my channel checks)
(4) Staffing levels / holiday plans / etc at apple stores come out - No
(5) Store display fit-out dates (overnight) info starts coming out - No
(6) Inventory numbers start filtering out - No

So why does everyone think the refresh is so imminent? Because intel released a new chip? Last time there was an iMac refresh, it happened weeks (if not months) after the intel chip was released.

I dont expect the iMac refresh for another week or so but you also have to consider that this is the longest wait time between iMacs. Most of the presumed components for an iMac seem readily available. I guess the question is why would Apple wait any longer?

Why wouldn't they? The perceived improvement in real life performance of the ivy bridge processor has been estimated at less than 15% and in some reviews even shows faster battery drain (which is relevant to MBP) so why rush? Is there a killer new feature that will make these machines sell like significantly faster than they are now mid-cycle? Does USB-3 really constitute a killer feature and will Apple even adopt it?

In fact the only reason to refresh is because people are waiting for it so there will be some warehoused buyers. Guess what. The total of said warehoused buyers is getting bigger with every day that goes by.

I am not saying there won't be a refresh but my channel checks tell me it's not imminent. Maybe I am wrong. But I don't think it happens until late May or June.

Sandy Bridge iMacs are a poor example; it was delayed by the thunderbolt chipset, which Apple ended up getting early access to.

Every necessary component is now out; it would be silly of Apple not to put out a refresh given that they're at the longest wait in L-Bar iMac history. MBAs have a much higher sell-through than iMacs, so you wouldn't necessarily see the warning signs in inventories as quickly. Given that there's nothing else to wait for (and the GPU improvements from AMD are incredible), waiting anyway just reduces the "freshness" and useful life of the new generation.

If Apple adopts ivy bridge (chances are they will) they have to use USB 3. Intel enables it. There is no extra work on Apples part to allow it.

Maybe it was Steve Jobs who pushed the refresh cycles. And Maybe Tim Cook wants to slow them down (for some strange reason).

Ya know i was just thinking that perhaps we are a month away or just days/ weeks away. I say this because ivy is out, AMD announced their gpu, NVIDIA is announcing theirs saturday i think, and we are almost a year in. iMac is a popular product vs Mac Pro , so i dont think iMac will go much longer in holding

Also, ivy bridge is not as big as a leap as sandy was for desktops. Ivy is more graphics and battery, notebooks. The imac will tout new gpu, anti glare glass and maybe thinner but those specs dont generate much rumor noise hense all things laptop and "i". I see imac within 3 weeks, silent refresh. No WWDC , only mbp would qualify for event

Nahh

What do I expect ?

Well Apple ... An up to date computer of some kind that isn't a year out of date would be nice : )
Cos no-one in their right mind is going to buy last years model now

Right now Apple is pushing Mother's Day promotions, so I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if they release a new hardware before that. May 15 still may be a possibility.
