In amongst all these 'xyz store is down' posts, I am wondering if perhaps the new iMac is going to get a touch screen display?

With Windows 8 coming soon and the whole non-Mac world going touch screen, I wonder if Apple will feel the new iMac must have this feature. Would certainly make harmonising the UI with iPad and IOS more straightforward.

I don't think touch screens on desktop products make much sense personally, but it sure as heck is coming to Windows land.

Not going to happen. At last year's WWDC Apple's Craig Federighi (sp?) - Vice President of OSX Software - was quite specific on what Apple thinks of touch screens.

- It's not comfortable or ergonomic to sit and touch a big screen all day
- No one wants dirty smudges on their monitors
- The trackpad is our way

However, the pen patent and the flip down iMac towards desk patent suggest that they may implement a pen interface with vibration feedback and more. Cult of mac had an interesting post about this last week.

when is this (*#$Y*(&@# ever coming out, i should just got the 2011 at beginning of the year.

With diablo 3 already out, i cant wait much longer, **** apple...

Yes, OMG.. I can't play a new game!!! Grrr!!! My life is over.

given the current circumstances, I want to see apple putting in Core i7 3770 CPUs in all models and a RAM upgrade to 8GB standard also on all iMac models. also their HDD lineup should start with a 1TB option standard. :apple:

I see everyone saying that the optical drive will be dropped to make it slimmer or more ssd/hd space. Is there no chance to get a blu-ray drive with the new gorgeous screen?

External.

Apple has no desire to add Bluray to Macs. I think they see that online video is going to be the King soon enough.

You mean they see that they make far more money charging people too lazy to deal with a disc.

I'd be happy to buy online, but it is a rip off compared to blue ray deals I find.

Yup. The only movie I have purchased on iTunes was a SD version that cost $5.99.

I doubt I'll be buying many books from iBooks as well seeing as how the digital copies of books that I own in physical form are actually more expensive than what I paid on Amazon including shipping.

Apps and Music are the two entities that Apple has priced sanely. Everything else is is avoidable IMO.

Books I'm actually willing to pay a little more for because it is convenient. Storing books takes up quite a bit of space, where dvds don't. Plus you can easily make your own digital copy of a blue ray, not so with a book.

Not really the case for me. I find great value in movies in iTunes, largely from the iCloud advantage. I buy pretty much all my movies now from iTunes (unless it isn't available, i.e: star wars, japanese anime movies), and there are many great deals to be had if you just check the movies section every Tuesday.

For example, right now, you can get great classic blockbusters like Gladiator and Forrest Gump for $9.99 sale price in HD. All the Bourne and Mission Impossible movies also ran for $9.99 in HD during a nice little sale not too long ago, and were even updated with standard Dolby Digital 5.1, closed captioning, and in the case for all the M:I films, all were just updated with iTunes Extras. And for those who had already owned these prior to the updates, thanks to iCloud, you could just redownload to get all the added bonuses like Extras and surround sound, totally free of charge. I personally think this is awesome.

I also only use iTunes gift cards, which I always buy at 20% discount sales from places like Best Buy whenever they run sales, so that knocks out a bit more off the sales price.

The ultra convenience of iCloud, the ability to update your content as content providers give Apple better copies without having to pay again, and no physical storage space offsets any price hikes from iTunes movies for me.

Those prices are the normal prices on blu-rays for those movies. You can go to amazon and get the three bourne movies for $30 on blu-ray (and that isn't on sale) This only applies if you actually happen to want the very few movies they put on sale anyway.

If you compare brand new blu-rays to apple movies then itunes wins out, but I never bought brand new blu-rays to start with.

Right, and that was my point. It is possible for older movies to be had at standard blu-ray prices during iTunes sale prices. But you also get the added benefits that I stated from above, and for me anyway, it makes up for the higher prices, if any.

And yes I agree, iTunes definitely wins out for brand new movies. New blu-rays usually debut at $19.99 - $24.99. And don't even get me started on the prices for newly released Disney animated films on blu-ray

BTW, third party resellers on amazon make it much cheaper most of the time.

The catch with digital media is that you can't sell the stuff when you're done, and get some money back.

And most things are just as expensive while fewer people take a share, since it's now almost directly producer>consumer.

***** them.

My fear now (after such a long wait) is that this is like flying very high and the fall is getting bigger, I mean, imagine if the iMac comes with 4GB RAM standard and the same USB 2 ports, no SSD standard, or the same glossy screen?

That would be so frustrating and sad.

I just hope that if that was the case then apple would have released the iMac way before and not wait for wwdc.

My guess Is that Apple will release the new Imacs after WWDC and only focus on the mbp's at the conference.

I would still like to be able to customize the new Imacs more i.e gpu, hd, ram and ssd.

All though I mostly play bf3 and render stuff I still don't want to pay a fortune to get the high end model, so I wish they would put the same gpu in all of the models but perhaps different cpu in some of them?

Very unlikely. I don't think it's ever happened before.

I too fear that there will not be any iMac's at WWDC.
I assume apple don't want to throw everything at us as this would defocus the main areas they want to wow the media here. Unless an iMac comes with something so new and fresh that everyone wants to write about it, they would rather update it silently after wwdc some time...the iMac isn't a media focused machine anymore...it just does what it does and everyone seen it.

Most likely Apple will show a new Macbook pro, showing everyone how thin it has become and how amazing the laptops are selling and how far they have come bla bla. While at the same time they will tell about the great new features of Mountain Lion and iOS 6 and Apple TV OS and how they all now connects with eachother in one great Eco System....After all WWDC is about software and developers.

Then iMacs and perhaps Mac Pros will be updated a month or two after wwdc with more limited media fuzz.

I hope I'm wrong tho :( but if you follow the history of the latest years of Apple, this seems like a probable outcome of WWDC.

The fact that Tim Cook said this years products are amazing, and he can't wait till it gets out, is just a way to hype through media. Steve Jobs said the same thing last year (and every year before that) - it's apples way of doing marketing...talking overly positive about their own products. But from what I remember, 2011 wasn't anything special, only natural evolved products based on all their current products.

imac 1-2 months after. No way. If not the keynote then tuesday or following week. June for sure

During the D10 interview Cook said "some great stuff" would be released next week...

Walt: What's coming out next week?

That's a great question, but I'm not going to answer it.

Walt: But what's coming out?

Cook: Some great stuff!

Think he just misspoke or could the iMac (or something else I guess?) possibly come out that close to WWDC? Has that ever happened before?
