Why is there so much crying about the camera bump? I'd much rather have something functional, and if it means I can take low/dim light pictures then I'll take the bump any day of the week as that's my biggest complaint with it. Who cares what it looks like? In any event I'll be trading in my XS for it as I just lease my phones so get a new one every year.

Unlike the notch - no-one will get passed that camera bump.

Doesn't bother me at all honestly but I'd prefer they make the background the color of the surrounding glass instead of black. No matter as I'll have a case on it regardless.

As I hate having protective covers on my phone (iPhone 7), camera bump is the annoyance since day 1. Would much rather have a couple of mm thicker phone, that can be stable on any flat surface when lying down. Since these are premium products, they should by now be able to sort this design anomaly out, one way or another.

^Absolutely though covers are a necessity (for me) because of the physical design and I would prefer not to have them. Some thinness has already been sacrificed in the X/Xs vs the 6/7/8. Why all the silly glass and extra bulk now? Apple needs to get the physical design together. Until then I'm leasing and moving to the new model each year. 2020 looks promising....

Does no one use a case? A case will somewhat “conceal” the camera bump.

I like my Apple leather cases. The camera bump is a non-issue for me. The missing USB-C port is more of a concern.

Everyone uses the case argument for crap design and camera bumps nowadays - if indeed that's how all modern phones are intended to be used then they should scrap the thick, heavy, impractical glass backs on these phones in place of thinner, lighter metal as they used to, or even plastic.

I think most non-fanboys have felt exactly that way since camera bumps first appeared, every article has half the comments saying "make it thicker to lose the notch and the battery bigger, win/win!". The obsession with thinness is a weird thing, the iPhone 3G felt far better in hand than the current crop of phones and was 11mm thick.

Awful camera layout and still a horrible notch. I know design is subjective....still....come on! Who thought this looked good?

I’m super stoked for iPhone season again. Right now I’m still in love with my 8 Plus and don’t intend to replace it yet, but never say never :D

Yeah if the complaint is about the uneven back then I can see your point. Personally it doesn't bother me at all, but I can see it being annoying, especially when it wobbles around like that. I'd rather it was thinner with the bump, but just my personal opinion. Perfect world it would be thinner without a bump.

I'd prefer the glass back as it scratches much less, I carry mine naked. Actually you have a much better point with plastic and that's really what these backs should be if we are talking 100% about functionality, but aesthetically I really enjoy the glass. I'm also of the opposite mind where I think that it's weird to NOT think about thinness, I'm shoving a freakin 6.5" screen into my pocket, you better bet I want it as thin as possible. But really the next step into making a huge phone smaller is a foldable screen, thicker but at least half the size.

Very true. Its akin to buying expensive leather seating in one's car and then covering it with plastic :)

And then bragging that "my car has premium leather seats"

Was looking to move back to an iPhone, but I guess I'll be using my Galaxy S10 5G for another year. Or I could sell it now while I can still get a decent price for it, and buy an XS Max to get back into iOS now and see me through to the 2020 iPhone, hopefully with a full redesign.
Nothing wrong with the S10 5G, so happy to hang onto it. The wide angle camera takes good pics, so this year's iPhone will at least have that going for it, if they do a good job with it.

I suspect this is entirely why Ives has gone down the road of leaving Apple... Borrrrrrring! They've totally forgotten why Apple got successful the first time, and the second time, and the third time... by making something NEW and yes - even colourful! Time for an actual GOOD flip phone OR an iPod sized phone OR SOMETHING other than the same freakin thing you've been making for 12 years! OMG I'm bored of Apple!

The bit that really sucks is that the OS is great so I'm stuck with the same old ****, albeit good ****. But I'm still totally not excited at all about Apples "new" phones. In all seriousness I'm more looking forward to the next time I stub my toe really hard - true.

I think you meant 2020's. Next Apple redesign with any level of excitement scheduled for 2034 at a guess

I always put an OtterBox on my new iPhone. The way it's made, the camera bump is actually close to flush with the case. I expect the same with the larger Camera Bumps also.

This is a mole hill being made into a mountain.

Man, this year's iPhones just seem so akward. Should have jumped on last year's models.
I think these are going to look very dated in a year.

yea, i wasn't sure if i should get the xs and at this point i'm super happy that i did. i don't foresee the 2019 model making me want to switch.

So this is why Jony was "fired"? As his last big Apple product, this will be a large part of his legacy. Yikes.

Those cameras are unapologetically hideous
Ugly as frick is close to what came to mind.

The 2019 iPhone is shaping up to be a bit of a turd.

why couldn't they just go this route?..

Why is there so much crying about the camera bump?
I can explain that.

1. Tech blog rags like this one desperately need something, anything, to post about it in order to generate clicks and thus revenue.
2. The minor change to the camera housing is the only thing remotely visibly different about 2019 iPhones that a picture can demonstrate.
3. A lot of people subscribe to these blogs for their tech "news" but unfortunately "news" is whatever the irresponsible bloggers can come up with to generate a click that day.
4. Combine the bloggers need to have something to post, and the followers easily-manipulated psyche, and you have a predictable horde of people whining about something that no one anywhere actually cares about.

See how that works?

Why? What it looks like on the back of the phone barely matters in comparison to how it performs/how it effects internal design.

That just looks weird.

They just stretched out the iPhone XS pill shaped bump. Looks like those cheap android phones that tried to copy the iPhone X but failed.

I actually prefer this new design.

if the "bump" color is the same as the phone it's one thing. if they make it black, like most renderings show - it's ugly af.
