I was just thinking to myself.. That would make a nice backup phone

Part of me is somewhat surprised that Motorola or some other company hasn't taken that design and modernized it a little bit into a high end flip phone (dumb phone). I realize smartphones have the lion's share of the market now and will continue to grow, but I think there is still some space for basic phones, and I don't see any "high end" basic phones out there. The offerings out there right now actually seem like a step back from the RAZR.

Does this count?

Yes. Yes it does. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

My first phone was this honking bastard of a thing I bought back in 2001 or thereabout...

Nextel-i500.jpg

The yellow Motorola Nextel i500. It gets life long props for being perfectly usable even immediately after being exposed to the tremendous heat of a car fire, and the resulting spray-down with foam and water.

It was charred, warped, and had water behind the protective cover over the little green monochrome screen, but I could still make phonecalls with it. They really don't make them like they used to.

I don't recall who made it, but I bought my first cell phone in 1992. I've lost count of the number of phones I've had since, including four iPhones. I admit that there are times I wish I wasn't so connected...

Ericsson GA628

Amazingly i powered it up this summer andit still had enough juice to make a call. Its been sitting in a box for, i dunno how lonh, but five years at the very least.

I had a cellphone before this but didn't really use it. This was my first cellphone I depended on .

I give you, the best electronic device created in human history:

The Nokia 6110

I think this was not released in the US , or it was under different name

I got my first phone 2 years ago. It was a really really old samsung slide up phone. It only had numbers so texting took forever and I hated that stupid thing. But the thing I hated most about it was it was made by the company I hate... SAMSUNG. But last Christmas I got an iPhone 4. And now I have another year with it. But it doesn't matter it's just way better then my last phone.

Not sure of the exact model number, but I'm pretty sure this was it - at least it looks like it. One of the first GSM phones for AT&T Wireless (pre-Cingular merger) circa 2002 or 2003. The thing was indestructible.

Kinda wish I still had it, put my SIM card in there and see how well it works because I think it would still work on AT&T's network. I'd be curious how call quality compares to today's smart phones, some of the older Nokias were amazing in that regard.

Mine as well!

First cell phone was a Nokia prepaid phone on what was then known as Cingular. As a matter of fact, here's my complete phone history: Nokia prepaid phone (February 2006), to Moto Razr (September 2006), to a Sony Ericsson w710i (late 2007ish) to the "TV Phone" the Lg Vu (that was also my first touch screen phone, late 2008) HTC Droid Eris (very first smartphone, March of 2010) Had that phone for 30 days. Ended up exchanging for the Moto Droid. Then I got the Droid X, a year later when my Moto Droid randomly died on me (March 2011) Went from that, to the Galaxy Nexus (December 2011) I then got the Galaxy S3 (August 2012) And now I have the gold iPhone 5S (September 2013) Couldn't fit the 5S on that pic though lol

I first got a cellphone in 1999 with Pacific Bell Wireless, which then turned into Cingular and finally AT&T. I owned a Nokia 5190. It seemed like they were the most popular brand back then.

That was mine as well. Remember the removable faceplates?

I got a Sony Ericsson Z520A as my first phone in grade 7, when I started taking city transit for the first time. I still have it and it still works, but it requires a SIM card to work. I thought it was pretty cool - it has a built-in movie maker and ringtone maker, both being extremely basic. The ability to change out faceplates was also pretty cool. It was probably expensive when it was new in 2005.
