When the iPhone 4G rolls out, are you going to wait till Summer 2011, or sell your 3GS on Ebay/Craigslist to offset the upgrade penalty? Odds are, the new one will be a substantial improvement over the 3GS, a complete upgrade, so patience might pay off, but I guess if you can sell your 3GS for a good price, there's really nothing wrong with constantly upgrading.

Offset route. I sold my 8GB 3G for £280 ~ $460 and used that towards a new 3G S. If i didn't get a nice chunk change i probably would've kept my 3G so yeah...as long as i get decent resale values i'll probably keep updating

EDIT: Truth be told if the Pre was available in the UK i probably would've gone for that instead. *Shrug*

I will only update before the 2 yr upgrade if they introduce the dual core ARM processor which is a stretch right now. I have no use for it but I will update anyways.

For me it is simple, right now I am the only one who moved to AT&T from our Verizon family plan bc my phone was up...lol

Both of my sons are up next June so we cancel Verizon move them to AT&T someone gets my 3GS and I get a new iPhone.:D

My wife and mother move from Verizon the end of next summer, so I assume my wife will trade up from her 8830 Curve on Verizon to an iPhone on AT&T, so it looks like there will always be a iphone to be replaced every year, and guess who get's the new one....ME:eek:

More then likely depending on the upgrade, I may stick with my 3GS, because I heard rumor that the next iPhone is supposed to have a slide out keyboard, and I like the 3GS just the way it is.

Personally I can afford to buy a new iPhone every year, yes i might sell my old one of Ebay, but generally speaking I can afford it

I just made up my iPhone 3G 8 gig auction page and saved it as I'm still working out details but do you think that I could actually get away with selling my 3G for over $300? I made it a bid starting at $299 it's in great condition, everything works and it's running 3.0. What SHOULD I sell it for?

So lets say Apple does release a new iPhone in 2010, there is just going to be another one in 2011... and 2012. So are you going to keep waiting for the next best thing or buy and enjoy? I for one know my contract is 2 years and have NO misconception that i am owed a new iPhone every time one is released. A new iPhone doesn't make my 3GS stop functioning...

They're going to update the unit on an annual cycle. I'll probably upgrade mine every 18-24 months. I got the 2G, skipped the 3G, got the 3GS. I'll see what Apple's cooking in 2011.

Research is our friend:

LTE aka 4G network on Verizon will use..................... SIM CARDS.

Would be a great time for them to start providing iPhones... even though I think that AT&T will still keep having iPhones, too.

Reading being fundamental as always, I present:

Using cognitive higher functions is your friend;

Verizon Wireless made their plans for their LTE network a wee bit clearer in a generally dull conference call Wednesday, with chief executive Lowell McAdam saying that the network would launch commercially in 20-30 markets during "the second half of 2010," with "nationwide buildout complete in late 2013 to early 2014."

20-30 cities by 2nd half of 2010 will not support an iPhone launch. There's almost no way that iPhone is going to launch on a network that only covers a tiny fraction of the US.

Thanks for playing.

2G to 3G was huge with GPS and 3G, but this was necessary because 2G really wouldn't be competitive for long. 3GS with video recording, compass (rarely used), and faster processor, not as huge, but it was minor because there weren't as many 2G owners (from a 2 year contract) as 3G owners (more of them). This isn't 100%, but Apple may be preparing some of the best features for the majority 3G population next year. Next year will be something big because Apple needs to have something to keep competing with Verizon and T-Mobile phones when the majority of the 3G owners (not all of them will try and upgrade necessarily) want a new revolutionary phone like they had with the 3G. I'm hoping for 4-5 MP camera with optical zoom, flash, twice the RAM of the 3GS, and whatever Apple feels is innovative enough. I'm sure I can survive with an iPhone 3G, it's practically one of the best phones still on the market, but Apple is successful in tempting us enough to make our 3Gs look like nothing, but I'll try and wait.

Hopefully someone (Palm maybe?) will have a true "iPhone killer" to give the next gen a real fight. Until then, there's nothing to think about.

what does he win? Lol

I will get a new one every year. Why? Because I want to and I can... Lifes too short. If I live to next year the 4G shall be mine.

Sell it and get the next one. I bought my 16GB 3G for $340 last year, and sold it for $400 at the end of May. Bought a 32GB 3GS for $365 this year... ended up making $35 a year later. Not bad.:)

I'll weigh the advantages against the cost (prob won't be eligible for upgrade) and see if it's worth it... Obviously.

We'll be upgrade eligible on our family plan. If the new iPhone has things I want, I will buy it. Simple as that.

Life is too short to deny yourself luxuries on the basis that next years luxury will be better.

For me I'll have my luxury this year, and next, and the one after that, and the one after that........

Okay, but not all of us can do that. I have to wait till my 2 year contract expires so I can get the phone for $300. $300 extra in my pocket pays a bill or two.

Right... paying $500 a year on phones is a little nutty. Or at least lets say not everyone shares that set of priorities. But, if through normal circumstances you can upgrade for $200/$300, that's a little more reasonable luxury.
