I knew on the launch day of the 3G that I have a new yearly tradition. Every year I will buy the new iPhone and pawn my old one off on my wife ... because that's what people in love do.

I just made up my iPhone 3G 8 gig auction page and saved it as I'm still working out details but do you think that I could actually get away with selling my 3G for over $300? I made it a bid starting at $299 it's in great condition, everything works and it's running 3.0. What SHOULD I sell it for?

I'd advice you to start at 0.99c...it usually works out to a real price in the end. You should be able to get $300 for it easy. I'd also suggest you unlock it as this boosts resale value significantly. Use words like 'pristine' 'no scratches or dents' etc

Also don't be afraid to negotiate offers outside the auction. You can also simultaneously place a craigslist ad for further reach.

When the iPhone 4G rolls out, are you going to wait till Summer 2011, or sell your 3GS on Ebay/Craigslist to offset the upgrade penalty? Odds are, the new one will be a substantial improvement over the 3GS, a complete upgrade, so patience might pay off, but I guess if you can sell your 3GS for a good price, there's really nothing wrong with constantly upgrading.

ATT is going to give me the 1 year fully subsidized price like they did this year. Then I'm going to make a mint selling mine on Craigs List.

Have fun waiting every other year to upgrade.

Next year's phone will be a minor upgrade compared to this year.

.99c? Won't that end up with me making like $10?

What will you 3GS owners do in one year?

They will most likelly cry and complain that AT&T and Apple are screwing them over and that they deserve a subsidized price and some more nagging and complaining.
Happens every year now :D

For me, it depends on what happens next year. The 3GS seemed to me to be a very logical upgrade. I'm not sure what could be added to it next year (but surely there will be something).

Also, the 3GS does support AT&T's next network upgrade (up to 7.2 Mbps, which is double what their DSL gets) which won't begin rolling out until later this year/next.

I told myself last year when I bought the 3G that I wouldn't buy another one, and then I sold my 3G on eBay (for a measly $260, but I was only trying to break even on the extra $200 for the 3GS) to get the 3GS (which I did today). Maybe next year I'll do the same thing, then again, I'm not sure what else they could add to it, and it seems to me that the 3GS is a hardware platform I can live with for the next 18 months.

So, to answer the original question: Next year I'll either (a) sell my 3GS, upgrade early and sign a new 2 year agreement or (b) wait 6 months, then upgrade and sign a new 2 year agreement, then sell my 3GS.

Continue to use my 3GS

I'll probably wait until the devices for the LTE networks start coming out in 2011 (+/-) to upgrade from the 3GS.

Unless something catastrophic happens to AT&T between now and then, I expect my 3GS over the next two years will do everything that it did when I picked it up on Friday. :D

More, actually, considering the app store and the 7.2 Mpbs 3G rollout.

Ridiculous question, it's been asked a thousand times on here.

It's only 3g owners that are thinking about what 3g s owners will do next year, 3g s owners are too happy with the phone to care about what's going to happen next year. Life is too short to deny yourself luxuries on the basis that next years luxury will be better.

For me I'll have my luxury this year, and next, and the one after that, and the one after that........

Me too! Plus, AT&T forced me to pay no-committment pricing though I've no clue why.. so next year I'll get that price break. I want iChat.

If the only thing substantially different about the phone is the fact that's it's 4G, then I won't even consider it because I don't even have 3G in my area yet and probably won't until the end of the year. I would maybe consider if they did the subsidized price for customers who bought a 3GS when it first came out.

When you sell your one-year old iPhone on ebay, the new one is basically free + adding on one year to the contract. It's almost a no brainer for me :)

I'm saving money with buying the iPhone's. Before I would go through at least 2 phones a year, sometimes more. either buying them outright or doing early upgrades and such. Now it seems that I am down to just 1 upgrade a year which is OKay in my book. I had a BB 8800, Palm something or other, Cingular 8525, and another phone or two in the year leading up to my iPhone purchase.

My plan allows me an upgrade every 12 months - I'll do what I did this time and the previous release - sell my old phone for $325 and get the new one for ~$2.37 out of pocket. They waive the upgrade fee or whatever as well.

After the out of pocket cost for the first iPhone my subsequent 3G/3GS upgrades have cost me a net total of about $5.00 and I've gotten them they day they were released...

I got the 3GS this year by walking into an ATT store on launch day so I'll probably sell my 3GS and upgrade to the new one next year. Actually is showing on my ATT account online that I'll be eligible on 6/20/2010 lol.:D

Next June I'll be upgrade eligible again (over 99 a month), I'll buy the new iphone for 200 and sell the 3gs for 300 just like I did this time. Profit!

I will only update before the 2 yr upgrade if they introduce the dual core ARM processor which is a stretch right now. I have no use for it but I will update anyways.

Like the dual-core ARM A9 processor that's rumoured to power the next-generation (4G) iPhone? :D

I am an existing 3G customer who's holding off until I at least become fully upgrade-eligible. Depending upon when it is, I may skip the 3G S altogether.
