I work in public television and I'll be using mine to preview series and shows that I may purchase for broadcast. The larger screen size makes extended viewing easier on the eyes.

  • News
  • Browsing with Twitter in split view so I don't miss anything
  • Reading technical programming books and PDFs
  • Marking up PDFs with the pencil
  • Taking notes (watching WWDC videos and taking notes as I watch )
  • Sketching app designs and ideas
  • TV shows and movies

I'm coming from an iPad 4.

Thus:

* Bigger

* Faster

* Smoother

* Better screen

* Can run iOS 9 without LAG & STUTTER

* Will allow me to enjoy functions like PIP & Slide Over, which my iOS 8.4 iPad 4 cannot

Please tell me ... how on earth is it the same toy?

Seriously, go back & rethink.

On a second note: Love it, or leave it. The Apple Watch is not for me, but I'm not hanging about in the dedicated forum & saying how it's not for me?

One word will sum up all that you are feeling right now: Jealousy.

/discussion.
You, the point, missed.

Web surfing - iPad pro probably wins there, but both are pretty good. But the Edge browser needs work, it desperately needs gesture support for back etc.

Media consumption - maybe again the iPad sneaks a lead as the apps are quick to switch to and do what you need? SP4 has more window management if you're running the desktop apps, but split screen or PiP might be enough on iPad.

RDC I use my iPad Air for that, and touch for the mouse is ok (I don't use direct touch, I use the mode where you move the mouse by touch but the pointer isn't where your finger is). A larger screen is always welcome for that. But I wish they had mouse support - especially if you're using it propped up on a stand with a physical keyboard.

Generally I just find for most of what you describe and iPad is fast and easy. A SP3 (my only experience so far, don't have a 4) is great as a laptop, but not so great as a tablet. And the iPad is great as a tablet and not so great as a laptop (can't believe they didn't add mouse/trackpad support for the pro). So you have to balance what you use it for and which mode tablet/PC is most important to you, and what compromises you can live with in the less optimised mode.

there doesn't seem anything fundamental that the pro can do that the air 2 can't (except size and pencil and if you want/need a pencil you're probably already sold on it).

Thanks for the input. I think I'll just stick with my SP4 and see what iOS10 and Pro2 bring next year. I'm pretty content with my SP4 but just wish it had better quality apps.

The only reason I bought the Pro was for the Apple Pencil. Like someone else, I hope to make the switch from paper notes to electronic notes. iPad Air 2 was too small and awkward for me to do that with. I am a big notetaker for school and am not a fan of "typing" notes, much rather write them out. I get tired of buying numerous notebooks so I'm hoping this will be great for me.

Unfortunately until the Apple Pencil is available and my keyboard arrives, I probably won't use it much. I bought it for those two accessories alone. Wish they would have been available right away.

It is a great tablet though, just a little on the heavy side.

I may eventually buy it but right now, I have hard enough time using all my devices as it is. I have a 2015 MBP, 2012 13" MBP, Surface Pro 3, 128GB LTE iPad Mini 2. I rarely even touch the iPad. The charge in the iPad lasts just under a month with very little use. If I did buy the iPad Pro, it would be the 32GB version without the pen and Keyboard. I rarely use the pen on my SP3 now, mostly just for taking screen shots.

I will be using it for
  • Designing
  • App Mockup creation (there are cool apps for that)
  • Draw down my ideas etc. when Programming
  • Things around Project Management
  • Additional display via Duet (very portable big second display)
  • Media consumption (Movies, YouTube etc.)
  • Taking notes
  • Using it at for japanese classes with a dictionary in splitscreen
  • Maybe games (if some nice ones come out, that are not pay-to-win)

On the go development. I have a Mac in the cloud and use Parallels Access to access it. Works GREAT!

This is actually a very nice idea. I might do the same.

I am also confused between the Surface Pro 4 and the iPad Pro.

It is a known fact that iOS has better and more apps than Windows but it is also a known fact that Surface Pro 4 is running Windows 10 Pro which means you can install desktop class software and games which has better use than just apps.

Because are great devices in their own way but we may have to decide which one will better suit our needs.

In terms of price and value I think SP4 has an edge because younger more storage.
However iPad Pro has LTE support which can be useful if you want to carry the oversized device out of the house.

No you're right, I have a proper job
What are you 12? that was uncalled for, but if you want to go that route on trying to compare importance of jobs... I could say that being in Law Enforcement or any other service job would trump any other... But, they, don't. Artists are just as important and relevant as anyone else. Try acting like an adult, it might do you some good.

The Surface Pro 4 is more useful because it will be more useful with loads of software, apps and games.

IPad Pro is also good but it really is just a bigger iPad with a better pencil.

If pencil is the main reason then may be iPad Pro. Don't know.

I think there is an intrinsic philosophical difference in how MS and Apple approach the product. MS prefers a more utilitarian route and thus their products are inclined to be more 'jack of all trades'. Apple prefers the more focussed route with a more refined user experience at the cost of being more limited. It's the basis of all the arguments people have had over their preferences for one platform or another. I have to say though that I think MS doing way better on the hardware side by following Apple with the in-house hardware and software approach.

I'm not sure if you are from the UK at all? I totally agree with you, however in the UK the police are looked at as scum and shown no respect at all. Paramedics get beaten up and attacked. Even armed forces come home to people burning poppies at their parades.

This is from an ex police officer.

All jobs are needed and id rather someone have a job and be paying to society than say on their bum doing nothing with their life.

I also wish I could draw more than a stick man!!

Same. I don't know whether to go for the SP4 or iPad pro. Ipad pro would be a tiny bit cheaper as I could sell my air 2 and consolidate devices a bit.

Surface pro isn't a great tablet but is a great laptop. iPad pro is a great tablet but not a great laptop.

didnt have any 'Pro' reasons to buy but im enjoying surfing and Netflix on it, everything is just more immersive, dont think I will bother with the keyboard but have found that the £1 iPad stand selling in Poundland cradles my £700 tablet perfectly

I have a surface pro 3 and I like the ability to use the stylus or type depending upon what I need to do. I find the surface pro 3's keyboard to suit my needs just fine and have never had a problem using it on my lap. There are things that I dislike about windows itself - so that is the main drawback to me.
I just received my ipad pro and I love the screen and the split screen is fantastic for my needs. If the pencil is as good as the hype suggests, then it will be the device I use in places where a keyboard is unwieldy -- I am a lawyer and having documents I can read on one side of the screen with note taking ability on the other - is quite useful and will cut down on me having an ipad for the docs and legal pad for the notes. It also seems better for just reading than the surface pro 3.

I have an older MacBook Pro and don't really consider myself a power user. The MacBook Pro will be retired as a music server and the iPad Pro will become my everyday device.

- Passwords/confidential info management
- PDF viewing/editing; document archive
- Note taking (text and handwriting)
- Word processing and basic document layout

- iTunes movies/video library management (due to size)
- backups of key data to external hard drive
- device firmware updates (like car nav or bluetooth firmware)

  • Reading large scanned/OCRd PDF files, highlighting and annotating via Goodreader
