I don't think I'd like to go back to the PC. It's either the current model or until it gets a refresh, whether Penryn or Montevina. The MBP is one of the rare few models available where I live that offers a Matte screen; most PC models are glossy but for practical reasons I'd go for Matte. Dell and Acer offer the best bang for the buck when it comes to computer components but neither offers Matte. The Apple premium looks large initially but after taking into consideration little things like this the premium isn't that large after all.

But if you're waiting for a MBP update, it means you want to use the Mac OS. Why would you go back if you didn't have to?

There is the issue - your assumption is flawed. I want a MBP because I can run OSX for personal reasons and dual boot to XP/Vista for work. Until that was possible, I would never have bought an MBP because I need a laptop that runs windows. Can't work without it (I work in a lawfirm that uses a bunch of windows only legal support and research systems - the stuff the firm bought just isn't available on Mac). So there is the rub - I'm waiting on a MBP because I want to use both OSs and have to use Windows. But since I'm running out of time (just switched firms and need a new laptop for a big project kicking off in march) I'm hesitating on pulling the trigger on a MBP purchase because the gear is getting a little old.

But not a lot old - granted. I was at a store last night playing with the MBP 15.4" 2.2 Ghz. It was a nice piece of kit and I was pretty damn close to buying it. The keyboard left me a bit cold though. The keys have a gritty feel to their surfaces that reminds me of popsicle sticks. Didn't like that.

I'm not waiting for a MBP updated because I have a problem with windows. I have been using windows for my entire life, and I haven't ever had half the of the problems that most mac users here claim to have had with the operating system. I don't prefer OSX over Windows, nor do I prefer the other way around. I'm more nuetral on the issue.

Don't assume that everybody believes that OSX is the messiah of operating systems. I don't. I'm waiting because I like the design on apple products. Because I like having the flexibility to use any operating system (including OSX). Etc.

I am calling you a blind fanboy because all you have told me is that PCs are trash and that anyone who even considers a PC must be an absolute idiot. I have yet to see you provide a sufficient reason to support your statement other than "it's PAINFUL."

Guess what? I've been using Windows all my life too. My day job is basically excel and excel on the mac is terrible. (Uh oh.. I criticized something on a mac.. there goes my fanboy status.. damn!)

I said that I didn't think buying a PC was an alternative to a MBP. The topic of the thread was "what if apple doesnt release a new MBP by end of Feb?" And someone said they'd buy a pc. I said I didn't think it was any kind of alternative since using Windows is painful.

I like OSX. Some like Windows. You're neutral. Congrats! You're awesome. Feel better about yourself now?

Echinda - I'm in the same boat -- powerful mbp + parallels or fusion is going to allow me to just use my pc as a music server. I'm psyched about that. If you could buy a mac that runs both osx and windows or a sony/dell/hp that only runs windows, what do you think the proper choice is? For me, it's no choice. You get a MBP. You get one because you can do all the crap you WANT to do on a mac and then if you need to, switch to windows for the work stuff.

i use both windows and leopard, but i agree with aiterum that you can be neutral.. one OS has an advantage againts the other..

to make my point.. right now, what's the OS used by our DEFENSE system?? the one in the helicopters, the aircraft carriers and what's running on that laptop carried by our troops in IRAQ? or the police officer down the block??

i love apple products... but i totally get turned off by MAC users who honestly believe they're a cut above the rest..
at the end of the day, we're all consumers! unless you're steve or michael etc:(

Seriously, you can put together the sexiest pc laptop you can imagine with all the specs you want... it still runs XP or Vista.
Or a Linux distro. I don't want to deal with all the driver issues, but I'd rather that than buy an expensive laptop with an old processor architecture. Those seem to be my choices now. I hope this update changes that fact soon!

I largely agree. I'm just a little put off by paying the same price for hardware today as I would have paid, what? 9 months ago?, when other manufacturers have let their prices fall as the gear aged. Apple doesn't do that. Great for their margins, sucks for the consumer.

To top it off, I'm in Canada and they nickel and dime us on the exchange rate. Exchange rate today is US$1 = C$1.01204. The 2.2 Ghz 15.4" MBP is US$2000 at Apple Store US which translates to C$2025, but they charge C$2200, essentially burning me for an extra C$175 (US$173). Not quite enough to stop me from buying but pretty close.

Combined with the lack of any discount on the price though, it just makes me that much more unhappy about buying aging gear. I still might do it, but it is going to put a damper on that little bit of bliss known as "unboxing".

NO MBP by end of Feb

What will I do ? Just sold my previous MBP and have a BN Macbook and 4 gig of ram sitting here in the box just waiting to be opened and used.

Honestly ? At the potential cost of the new MBP's and what I would use it for ?

Nothing? Nada, Zip,

Just like the potential iPhone with 3g, buy it? NOPE, why ? AT&T and there voice and data networks ? So far below par. Over priced, CS is less than knowledgeable, and if you call after 5pm your screwed with TUDE

I know how you feel.. but I guess under $200 it's okay.. EVEN THOUGH, with $200 I could buy a external HD or more ram.. =\
