Like, you're just walking around in some store, checkin' out da furniture, havin' a grand ol' time.

And BAM! All of a sudden two kids are running around playing tag, don't see you, run straight into you, knock the iPhone out of your hands, and the iPhone falls straight onto the ground and gets shattered?

Then the kids are just staring at you completely scared.

What would you do?

(Completely fake story, never happened to me but could happen.)

Use the force and choke them.

i might not HAVE kids, but i was a kid, and my parents would have whooped me if a acted that way in public, or we would just leave.. it would be UNACCEPTABLE. it is not hard to control kids, but the new school train of thought were smacking a kid on the butt and scaring them is not good just makes in impossible.

They might be long gone, but i would follow them to their car with the liscence number. If you file a report cops HAVE to follow through.

... only if there are witnesses. You'll probably get in trouble for wasting police time

I would, well, knowing a situation like this it would end up being the parents that would have to pay for it. I would not pay another $200+ for a phone and have to go through the hassle with Apple and AT&T about subsidized and unsubsidized prices. I would have grabbed the kids by the arms, taken them to their parents, show the phone and explain the story to their parent, and then tell the parent that they must pay to have it replaced, and I would also expect a little bit extra too for the inconvenience of not having a working phone for a day or two.
THANK YOU!! i'm not the only "grinch" around here!

absolutely not. it is entirely legal and not unlawful to report Damage of Private property if you have the broken property in hand.. ANd witnesses are a GOOD thing, but not needed to file a report, and you WILL NOT get in trouble for wasting police time because it is a legitimate claim.

I would NOT let it slide, i'm sorry.. i would make them pull the stores survaillience tapes to prove my case. I work hard for my stuff, money is not somethjing that just appears for me.. if some little brat with parents who dont care that their kids are acting inappropriately breaks something that i worked hard to pay for, i WILL be making a stink.

If it DIDNT break, and there was just ding or unnoticable scratch, i wou;d just ream out the parents and scare the kids

Jesus, there are other countries you know?

I think that the kids parents would apologise profusely and pay for the damage. Lets not all just assume that they wont.

I like your thinking. WOuld dragging your knuckles help with this scenario too?

It varies depending on the parents. Forcibly grasping a pen works a treat though. Its kind of a subconscious knife threat. :D Just walk around holding a pen real tight with a strained look on your face.

talk is cheap

talk can be cheap, but i HAVE done it before. I had a kid come FLYING into my shopping cart with his freaking WHEELIES and knocked over EVERYTHING that i JUST paid for. A bunch of glass jars broke and bruised a ton of fruit and veggies. The mom refused to hang around and the grocery store wasnt just going to REPLACE my groceries. i got the lisence plate, called the cops. Meanwhile, store security wouldnt let her leave.. They held her there and made her buy new stuff for me.

Well, if it was that 13 yr old kid from the, "Am I young for a 3G owner?" thread, it'd be simple: Just swap 'phones and SIM cards and that's that.:)

I love 'phones with SIM cards. So glad to be shot of Sprint!

Haha! Nice.

I think if this happened to me, I would just be like, "Aww... man." See if they apologize or offer to pay for the damages, otherwise I would just move on and see if Apple can somehow replace my phone for free.

shouldn't shop in scummy areas.

Well...two young kids on one bike came tearing down the drive in front of their house out onto the road and I hit them with my car. They and the bike went over the hood and into a ditch.. I ran and fetched their parents (who were totally unfazed, while I was nearly freaking out that they were seriously hurt ) and we were all relieved that there were only cuts and bruises.
I got my car repaired and gave the parents the bill (about the cost of an iPhone) and they paid without a fuss.

pain in the butt kids are EVERYWHERE>. and so are lazy moms.. the laziest are the rich yuppie ones.. THOSE are the kids with the wheelies knocking into people.

I was in Home Depot in a bad neighborhood and had a long 2x4 in my homedeopt "big" cart. the freaking kid walked up to it and STEPPED right on the end making the side see saw up and GRIND against my legs. I stayed calm and just said "Hey! Dont do that!" The mother grabbed the kid by the shirt and put the smack down on him - i felt a little bad.. but its the yuppie annoying moms and kids that you have to watch out for.

What if you dont have a pen to hand. Would a knife do?

If you have a knife and no pen don't let them see the knife until you have finished talking. Then drop the knife between you and them. Look at it then look back up and stare at the parents. They should move away pretty sharpish.

To be honest, I would be surprised if anybody did not react in the way that I explained that I would, I would have done the same thing if it were a crappy $30 phone, the inconvenience is the biggest part of it.

Think of this as another example, say that you had your 17" MacBook Pro (which can be priced with Apple for upwards of $3,500) with you at your local Starbucks and had it on the table while using their wifi and drinking a coffee. The same two kids are running around and knock it right off the table onto the floor breaking it completely. What would you do then? Just sit there and do nothing, continuing to let the kids run around the store, and replace it with your own money? I know I wouldn't, I would be furious at the kids and their parents for letting them run around like that. I would expect the kids and their family to replace it, and I would be expecting something more on top of it just for being without a computer, and losing all of my files that were on it.

AMEN!! i used the car analogy to try to get thing through to people.. but they dont seem to understand.. maybe money grows on trees for most apple owners
