I want a corsa because I'm so hardcore :p they seem to be quite cheap but insurance is just mind blowing. The cars I'm looking at are around 2grand and then the insurance is about 7 grand. Could get myself a small apartment or something for that much like.

I have a honda ridgeline and I'm happy with the truck. At this point in my finances, it makes little sense to drop 25 - 30k on a car or truck. I'm content to keep it for several more years. That being the point, I cannot imagine what I'll have in 4 more years.

New driver?

Try Adrian Flux -- http://www.adrianflux.co.uk/young-drivers/
or 4YoungDrivers -- http://www.4youngdrivers.co.uk/

I have used 4YoungDrivers to find a premium (it's a bit like GoCompare etc.) and I have heard good things about Adrian Flux. Just be careful with 4YoungDrivers, some of the policies it turns up have a large excess!

Is My Motor Dead???

I have an Automatic 2000 Saab 9-5 2.3t

2 days ago, my car shut off while it was in park. I discovered that the oil was low so I put in 2 quarts. It still shakes a lot and shuts off almost instantly if I do not rev the engine a little or press lightly on the gas. I haven't driven the car again. I am very worried that this may be a 'get a new car' type of issue. I noticed yesterday that there was a pretty fresh oil spot under where I had been parked. I bought the car about a month ago and have yet to get a tune up.

As a just-turned 17 year old, who has had his license for about 4 months and already been in an accident, I'm not looking for a new car anytime soon.

I currently drive a 02 base-model Honda Civic, that my parents bought for themselves in 2002, but since then they've gotten different/newer cars, and I inherited this. I'm not complaining at all, it's a car whose complete accidental records I have, and there aren't any problems with it.

The accident actually wasn't my fault at all. I was stopped at a stoplight, and the person in front of me (Driving a SUV) decides to put their car in reverse and step on the gas.... At the end of it, I need a new hood and a new front bumper.

On Topic: My next car, if I get my wishes, be a Scion tC.

I have a thing for Honda Fits. Meh.

That was what *I* wanted to buy, a few months back when I was in the market for a new car. Small on the outside, big on the inside; smaller than the '98 Rav4 I was trading in, but just as roomy.:) A mini-minivan. For me, the must have feature was the Magic Seat. A black Fit Sport was in my future.:)
But my wife wanted a Civic, a white Civic.:( So we compromised and got a white Civic.:p

I like the Volvo C30, but really I'd would have a nice road bike instead :D

Honda Jazz is streets ahead of Smart ForTwo in any sort of driving. There really is no contest here.

I agree. I have a Fit and have no problem with freeway jockying, passing or cruising at 70+mph for long distances.

I have never felt "left behind" or without plenty of power on tap.

I've taken multiple road trips with 3 passengers and a loaded hatch.
I was still able to maintain my normal driving speed, style and got 35-40mpg while doing it.

I <3 My Fit!

This is what my wife and I are looking at as a second car right now. A couple of years old, but low milage and great shape. I drive an Explorer as main vehicle, but gas is starting to kill the thrill, so to speak. I still need the Explorer to carry the dogs and tow the trailer, so it's not going anywhere.

Well realistically, I'll be getting my NY driver's license in August. How would I be treated by insurance companies there as a 26 year old 'new' driver?

I'd love to get something like a Dodge Charger (when I've established credit in the US too - starting all over is seeming a little daunting!), they do have a nice look to them, but here in the UK, my Hyundai Coupe (Tiburon) is costing £150/month on insurance...

I think my shortlist would be:
-Dodge Charger (not 2011 model as it doesn't look quite as aggressive)
-Audi A4 Avant (I've always liked these over here, but the temptation of a V8 might be too much)
-Honda Accord (Just because it's sensible, and a friend in NY has one and is pretty comfortable)
-maybe a coupe
-Escalade for 'Balla' status j/k (despite the dashboard looking like a wheelie bin...)

Although, my fiancée's grandma might let us use her 2002 Ford Focus whilst I'm still using my UK Driving License out there, but it needs to be registered, insured and inspected before we can do that, and I don't know if someone without an NY driver's license...

^They are all quite different cars.

I drove the Charger for about 2 weeks last year, rental car, and my first impression was that it was a tad lazy and fat given it's engine size.

It is really quite a big car compared to our UK cars, we drove from New Orleans to Pensacola with 5 adults all with large bags and it was pretty comfortable for all involved (I was the driver so it didn't matter to me:D). Over the course of the two weeks I grew to really like it, the boot is pretty generous however my lasting thought was that it does not need an engine that big.

I haven't driven the others however in my time I have driven a lot of estate cars and really enjoy having the boot (very good for dogs). One point to note that the estate cars I have driven tend to be a tad crampt in the back if you have a full set of passengers.

I really enjoy the driving style of Volvo and would definitely buy one in the future, I love the C30 previously mentioned.

Just to give a point of reference my car history is Vauxhall Nova (stolen), Ford Focus estate, Renault 5 (crushed due to the brakes being the worst the MOT mechanics have ever seen), Reanult Laguna, Renault Clio, Volvo V50, Hyundai i30 (pretty poor car overall), Suzuki Swift.

Of course it really depends on the distance you will be driving, how many passengers, dogs, equipment you need etc and nothing beats how you feel in the car always worth taking it on as long a test drive as they will allow you.

Ah, my first car was a Vauxhall Nova too :)

Most of my cars have been pretty small, the biggest being a Mondeo which was given to me...

I get that they are all different types of cars, but thanks loads for a British perspective on it. How was it filling it up though? I guess that's quite a nice experience compared to our £1.35/litre...

Ah, my first car was a Vauxhall Nova too :)

My Nova was a 1.2 E-reg (1985) Merit, it cost me £1500 to insure the bloody thing (I bought the car for £450). It had a manual choke and was pretty damn slow. It was a sound system banger.

In terms of the Charger it had a pretty large tank as I only remember filling it up twice (a friend did the last fill up as we travelled on to New York from Pensacola and they were travelling home from New Orleans, although the volcano had other ideas). It was cheap but coming from an English mindset I couldn't help thinking that it could be cheaper as it didn't need that engine. A Focus Estate with a 2.0 injection has more immediate punch and even the Volvo V50 2.0 diesel was more sprightly on the accelator pedal.

Mine was a 1.2 G reg Sting, automatic Choke, 5 Speed Manual, £220 to buy, £1300 to insure! It was really damn slow...

That sounds like a really fun road trip there though.

I currently drive a 2001 Golf TDI that I purchased new. It has 222K miles on it. So far it isn't showing any signs of wearing out. I'm also currently getting 46mpg commuting to work ~80 miles per day.

When it comes time for a new car, I'm either going to get a brand new Golf TDI or a GTI. I'm not sure which, but something tells me I'm leaning towards the TDI, as I don't want to get under 40mpg again. The GTI is sure a fun car though!

By the way, here's a new choice for economy car buyers:

2012 Hyundai Accent

2012_hyundai_accent_f34_ns_41511_717.jpg

The new 2012 Accent is VASTLY improved over the 2011 model, especially the new 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine rated at 138 bhp and new six-speed automatic. Hyundai rates the 2012 Accent at 30 mpg city, 40 mpg highway (EPA 2008 test). Given it's about US$3,000 less than the Elantra, this is now a very strong possibility of being my next new car. :)
