Yeah, we can discuss the situation in Japan. But only people with a lack of connection to the real world are thinking, "Gee, I wonder if iPad shipments from Asia are going to be delayed because of this." Do you honestly not realize how idiotic and careless that sounds?

It's a global economy. Do you really think that people are not making financial & business decisions at this very moment because of what is happening? Do you think that there is not a massive war room in Cupertino right now trying to figure out how this is going to impact their business?

You can call it idiotic & careless & I am sure that it is coming off that way, but I am just looking at the business impacts of the tragedy. That doesn't mean that I don't care about what is happening on the ground over there.

I want to see where this goes:D

Clearly nowhere good. I may as well have started a thread about abortion or government funded healthcare. There are too many strong opinions on both sides of this one & I never intended to elicit the kind of responses that this thread has generated.

If the mods want to delete this thread, that is fine by me. I think I got the answer I was looking for.

there's a wee bit of difference between the potential effects on the global economy..and the shipping status of a damn toy.

Glad to see we americans have our priorities in order.
This thread seems like something The Onion would post

Look, consider the fact we are all on our fancy computers with internet access and posting on a message board about technology products while millions of people in the world live terrible existences with all sorts of violence, illness and starvation.

Just because this story is big news right now doesn't mean you can't do anything else. Your guilt is your own. We could all be doing better things for the world than macrumors.

Pretty sure no one is saying we shouldn't be going about our day as usual. It's just a bit ridiculous that a natural disaster happens and the first thing some people think of is "gee, I hope this doesn't hold up my ipad shipping."

The OP didn't say it was his first thought. You're no different than the OP for taking the time to read and post on this thread.

Oh come on folks. Your all nice people. You just happened to be addicted to
new Apple toys.

Do really think junkies care about CNN? :D

Of all People, i'm sure the Japanese would understand.

Then again.....maybe not :(

I was up at 4AM this morning waiting to place my order until I saw the "ships in 3-5 business days" statement & decided to try & pick one up over the weekend & if I have no luck, I will order online.

But as I was up & had the laptop open, I saw all the devastation coming out of the earthquake & tsunami in Japan. While initial reports are that there was no damage done to China, it made me wonder how or if the supply lines & distribution channels were affected by this. I believe that if the shipments take a direct route from China to the US, the impact is nill, there still could be a ripple effect if any resources are diverted to Japan or were somehow impacted.

Does anyone think that the events from this morning will have any impact on the logistics of fulfilling orders?

*** And for the record, I am not trying to diminish the devastation. The lives that have been impacted or lost are thousands of times more important ahan a new iPad. That said, this is an Apple forum, so take it for what it's worth. ***

I don't know.. but I know everything is assembled in China.. Maybe some of the parts are from Japan.. but who knows.

lad have ****in word with yourself , "owners of the iPad will help". Pathetic.

Mods need to pull there finger and delete this classless thread.

So, you really think that someone is sitting there saying "Wow, I would give some money to help the people of Japan, but today is iPad 2 day, so screw'em, I'm going to buy that instead."

I'm sure people buying iPad's today are going to give thought to giving money to the cause. Some will, some won't.

This is all a matter of personal perspective, and everyone is entitled to their opinion.

No I just hate the way he said "iPad owners will help", why even mention the iPad in that comment about helping? Meh

The impact this earthquake will have is in revealing who's shallow enough to have the shipping status of their luxury item be the first thing that comes to mind when they hear about it.

Congratulations.

most of the parts are manufactured in Korea. Doubt supply chain will be affected unless they were heavily relying on Sharp panels.

Discussing the impact or non-impact of the situation in Japan on the shipping/distribution of a product in a forum dedicated to said product is not inherently sad, in poor taste or inappropriate…I think sanctimonious holier than thou attitude some people are shoveling over it is though…

think the only thing worse would be "hmm, I wonder if the guy who made my iPhone is one of the ones that offed himself at Shenzen and if so, maybe that's why it's not working right... hmm..."

I love the fact OP still fights tooth and nail when members have clearly explain the boundaries of social etiquette. Get a clue OP you are 7 shades of shallow and ignorance. I am glad I don't know you.

EDIT: LOL @ your global economy comment. Really? Do you really believe your own horse*****? Do you work in the corporate world? 'Cause you must be just a lovely person to be around.

The fact you are still asking about a personal luxury toy when a disaster is unfolding is pretty revolting. 60,000 to 70,000 people may be homeless because of this earthquake. You may have thought your question was innocent, but it shows a real lack of tact right now. Sure life goes on here, but worrying if the iPad will be delayed because of this earthquake is pretty short-sighted.

I feel bad for those people but there's things in this world going on right now and things that have gone on recently that are just as bad and worse than what happened last night.

Some people need to get over themselves. While mourning a personal and global tragedy is very important, it's also important to show class and restraint when addressing someone you may perceive as marginalizing the tragedies at hand. The world is not going to simply halt and watch Japan suffer. It is simply human nature to wonder about things and it's a question that deserves an answer. Nowhere in the OP was it suggested that his question was of more significance than the tragedy or that it wasn't a tragedy to begin with.

Tragedies effect lives in many different ways. While the possible delay of an iPad shipment is certainly irrelevant compared to the events at hand, in no way does that mean, that if the quake does indeed affect that, that it can't be discussed civilly while mindful of the tragedy.

I agree to an extent, but I think some are blowing the OPs question out of proportion.

I agree with this. When I first read the OPs first post I interpreted it as being about the effects of the tragedy on the global economy but being that this is macrumors it was made about the iPad specifically.

Also the OP did not even order the iPad...so I don't get how people are taking this as someone possibly being concerned about their iPad being delayed.
