What's Coming in iOS 8.1: Apple Pay, SMS Relay, Instant Hotspot, Camera Roll, and More

Any word from Verizon, AT&T, etc. on the hotspot feature? Is the service going to cost extra or work with our current plans? We all know they won't give you anything for free so I'm expecting the hotspot feature to be blocked.

Off Topic: Do you know how Verizon quality is in Philadelphia. I'm visit home later this year. :D

i wish apple would just SLOW DOWN.
releasing features that arnt ready for primetime yet.
broken health app.
OS updates that disable features.
bugs galore.
TOO many hands in too many different areas.

wish it was they focused on making their devices perfect than every year overhaul.
god forbid we go ONE year without anything new. would rather have a stable phone for an extra year than a 700$ device that only does 3/4 of what was promised.

iCloud drive??? yeah.

I don't think Apple's board agrees with this philosophy though.

for me. Have a 2012 Retina MBP with Yosemite, and 8.0.2 on my iPhone 6 and iPad Air. Am I missing something?

Same here. You're not alone. I've got a late 2013 iMac and an iPhone 6 Plus and it won't play ball... Phone calls work but not handoff.

Can anyone with an iPad Air confirm that 8.1 will disable burst mode? Apple's website states that it will be an Air2-only feature but my Air has it on 8.0.2

I'm actually surprised they haven't pushed 8.1 GM to developers yet. It's kind of odd they're making them wait until the public has it.

Can you explain how you find it useful? Just wondering if maybe there's some trick I'm missing to using it.

I think it's pretty lame. I would want a a side bar with my play lists with the current song playing in the center / right. I don't know anything except what it is now.

I'm also confused, I just tried instant hotspot from yosemite to my phone to be sure and it already works?

Only thing it won't let me do is instant hotspot when "personal hotspot" is turned to "off" on my phone. In the betas, the mac/ipad could force the phone to turn the personal hotspot on.

Any chance it is working only while your phone is tethered to your Mac? I thought I had instant hotspot as well, but it only appears when my phone is plugged into my Mac (charging).

They probably should have just waited to release Yosemite on Monday.

But then people would have one less thing to complain about, until Apple had to deal with both a release on iOS and a (major) release on the Mac on the very same day. Double the fun, or double the issues that invariably accompany release days?

Yeah, it's a shame they weren't so stupid to go that route. :D

I'm on 8.0.2 and I already have instant hotspot and continuity is working at least with safari.

I agree. There's been a lot of things either buggy or just outright missing from iOS for a long time. I'd really like to see a release that concentrated on bug fixes and cleaning up functionality.

For instance, it took forever just to get a reminders app. Then when we got it, the functionality between the app in iOS, OS X, and iCloud was slightly different. And even now, if I'm not mistaken, I can't sort by category, date, etc. in the iOS version. This to me is a huge oversight.

I'd like to see some more cohesion between apps/frameworks/functionality. For example, when I upgraded to the 6+ I lost my traffic conditions in the Today screen. So, I just asked Siri what my drive time home was and it couldn't because I needed to have Maps running with a route entered. Now, if traffic conditions, after it collects it's data, can provide this automatically then why can't I just ask and get that? It knows where I live since my address is in Contacts and it should know where I'm currently at.

I could go on and I'm sure everyone has a few things like this that are pet peeves. My point is, if they made the OS more cohesive it'd be a lot easier to use. And I can't imagine the type of things I'm suggesting would take much effort to implement.

I just want all the bugs fixed, that's all.
I don't know if I am just an unlucky victim, but I keep running into rough patches with iOS8. I can't even update my apps because it asks me for someone else's Apple ID password even though I am logged in with my account, and if I log out and try to update then it just spins forever.
This is one of many software issues I've hit since getting my 6+

First thing I did when I got this phone was clean a lot of photos and texts out. I would spend an hour going through things and deleting, then when I hit delete and they disappear, I leave and do something else on my phone, go back and everything I deleted was back again. Had to do things 2 or 3 times before they actually went away, which is a pain to do when it's something like organizing and such which is attention stressed and time consuming
Were those apps installed originally using the Apple ID that you currently have associated with the App Store? For example, I started fresh with my iPhone 6 and ended up with my iCloud Apple ID in the App Store. However, I use a separate Apple ID for App Store purchases. While my iCloud Apple ID was still there, I installed several apps and then realized and changed over to my other Apple ID in the App Store settings. After that, I would get bugged about entering the password for my iCloud Apple ID for updating those apps installed under it. I had to delete and install them again with the Apple ID I wanted to be using from the start.

Is this a completely random Apple ID you don't even know that it's asking you to enter the password for, or is it possibly one that was used at one time to install that app originally? I would simply delete the apps you think are causing this issue and install them with your Apple ID in the App Store settings. I was able to find out which apps were causing this issue for me when I backed up my phone + apps through iTunes. It gave me a warning that it couldn't back up three or four of them, and it clicked right away that those were the apps I had installed with the wrong Apple ID.

I can see all of my music library quickly and at a glance by scrolling through a matrix of album art rather than cycling through a list that shows everything in a singular column. I'm presented with 18 albums filling the screen. If I'm looking for something, I use the search function. If I'm just browsing for something to play, this works really well.

Yes, instant hotspot has been available since iOS 8.0 and the author is mistaken. It works fine for current users. Even my mom (who isn't techincal at all) made it work when she visited my place and downloaded some photos on her iPad without even connecting to my wifi.

Nope! Always only used one ID for everything. And it all worked 100% before I got my 6+ (previously used a 5 on ios7)

The ID is my sister's who I never ever see, and the only connection I have to her is her I had to create a backup of her phone on my laptop when giving her a 4S, but I don't see how that could interfere. The apps were all transferred from my iPhone 5 and then onto this with a restore from my 5's backup, so it's gotta be a glitch. :(
It doesn't ask me for her password if my account is logged out, either; it only asks me for her password if I'm logged in.
