What's Coming in iOS 8.1: Apple Pay, SMS Relay, Instant Hotspot, Camera Roll, and More

It just doesn't seem to want to play ball with me... I've got a late 2013 iMac and an iPhone 6 Plus, both with latest OS... I've followed all the instructions (not that there is many) and rebooted both devices but it's still not working. Very odd.

For me it was just trial and error until I got the thing working. A few settings are not so obvious (for me it didn't work until I stumbled across the IOS setting in FaceTime preferences that needed to be enabled before cellular calls would work.

The new feature is instant hotspot. So with personal hotspot turned off, you can activate the hotspot from the mac.

Which is also working right now. I did it last night. It requires that you are in a location with no known WiFi networks available. At home I don't see my iPhone listed in the Mac's wifi list. Outside, I do.

Personal Hotspot is turned off on my phone.

Gotcha. I am now seeing the reverse behavior I reported earlier. I have personal hotspot turned off, am untethered and I can create an instant hotspot! Possibly related: I just had my afternoon coffee.

BTW: Both my mac (10.10) and the iphone (8.0.2) were connected to the same wifi at the time.

I wonder if they will fix the sh** performance that iOS8 brought to iPhone 4S and iPad 2. That would be a welcome fix, even if they did away with some of the IOS8 features on those devices.

Does anyone know if developer is gonna put out an app that allows you to view the iCloud drive as say a folder?

I thought maybe good reader might have updated to slow this but not yet. That's one thing I do appreciate Dropbox for.

Goodreader does let you see all the folders in iCloud drive. Documents by readdle also does it, and is easier to access imo

What I really want to know is if Apple is going to allow third party Bluetooth 4 LE adapters to work with Cintinuity features. My MacBook Pro handles Yosemite perfectly but Ito old enough to not come with Bluetooth 4 so half of the new features just don't work.

I would prefer a $40-60 adaptor to a whole new $1,000 MacBook Pro

Were those apps installed originally using the Apple ID that you currently have associated with the App Store? For example, I started fresh with my iPhone 6 and ended up with my iCloud Apple ID in the App Store. However, I use a separate Apple ID for App Store purchases. While my iCloud Apple ID was still there, I installed several apps and then realized and changed over to my other Apple ID in the App Store settings. After that, I would get bugged about entering the password for my iCloud Apple ID for updating those apps installed under it. I had to delete and install them again with the Apple ID I wanted to be using from the start.

Is this a completely random Apple ID you don't even know that it's asking you to enter the password for, or is it possibly one that was used at one time to install that app originally? I would simply delete the apps you think are causing this issue and install them with your Apple ID in the App Store settings. I was able to find out which apps were causing this issue for me when I backed up my phone + apps through iTunes. It gave me a warning that it couldn't back up three or four of them, and it clicked right away that those were the apps I had installed with the wrong Apple ID.
Nope! Always only used one ID for everything. And it all worked 100% before I got my 6+ (previously used a 5 on ios7)

The ID is my sister's who I never ever see, and the only connection I have to her is her I had to create a backup of her phone on my laptop when giving her a 4S, but I don't see how that could interfere. The apps were all transferred from my iPhone 5 and then onto this with a restore from my 5's backup, so it's gotta be a glitch. :(
It doesn't ask me for her password if my account is logged out, either; it only asks me for her password if I'm logged in.
So maybe it's something similar to what I described as my issue, but caused by some stupid, annoying glitch that really does need to be fixed before you and possibly others hate Apple for life. If you ever feel like you need a fresh start and willing to go through the work, I would just start from scratch at this point. I wouldn't trust that any iOS 8 updates will fix this issue. I made that mistake, which was to hold out hope, with some of the glitches I was experiencing with my iPhone 4S.

That isn't right. It's just a way to have a client device activate hotspot mode on the phone, rather than drilling into the phone's settings to activate it.

If you can't create a hotspot now, nothing's going to change for you.

Thought it was too good to he true. Thanks for the info.

I'm sure they will. 7.0 ran like junk on older devices as well, and performance started to improve with 7.1. I'm sure the same will apply for 8.1.

I think you are right. I really should be getting a new iPad... had this one (iPad2 64GB) for 3 years. Provided I get the performance back, I can pass it down to my son, and he can pass his (iPad2 16GB) to his sister, who is still rocking an original iPad.

I think you're right. The one thing the Mac doesn't seem to be able to do yet is activate hotspot remotely if it's turned off on the phone. I guess that will be the new 8.1 feature.

Can anyone confirm that 8.1 will allow you to force the phone to use edge networks. There seems to be mixed reports. With the poor quality of 3G where I am along with the lack of LTE, this could prove useful.

I get fewer dropped calls on edge. I also wish you could force to edge.

The reason I'm seeking this is I might migrate to iCloud for all my needs, rather than google drive and Dropbox. Google gives you lots of space but their sync software sucks, and Dropbox doesn't give you much space for free.

My expectation is iCloud will work well as expected from apple and $1 a month is worth the 20gb, which is more than google and Dropbox combined, so I might as wel use it for everything.

With SMS Relay will I be able to browse through previous SMS messages from folks?

Like...if I receive a text message from someone in the afternoon while I'm away from my Mac, when I return to my Mac will the SMS be there or will only the ones delivered to my iPhone while proximate to my Mac will be shown (like how calls are)?
