you have a narrow mind. Apple is in a business to make billions. they are not a small Joe business trying to make a few bucks. They are not playing any game you are imagining.

look at fact: apple is preparing to launch in China soon (with 8 million already pre-ordered). They are also launching in additional 40 countries. Does this have any affects on U.S stock? absolutely.

you might ask, "why doesn't Apple focus on U.S since it is their prime market?" well, they can but they risk losing retail partners/customers in other countries in long term. if you are in an international business, would you want to upset your partners/customers?

you might ask, "why doesn't apple anticipate this? why not build more plants and hire more workers?"
well, if they do this, 3 months down the road when this demand fades, these extra plants and workers sit idle, costing money. they don't add more capacity just for a few months of peak demand. just like Amazon won't add more servers just to handle peak load during a few Christmas days.

In fact, no companies can handle this kind of demand within a month like this, over 20 millions phones over many countries within a month. Apple logistic infrastructure is unparalleled.

I give them until november to be able to have walk-in stock. If not then its a conspiracy. :D

Last year Sony released PS4 in multiple countries in Oct. PS4 stock in the U.S. was very low until Feb.

Sony loves to sell more to customers so that they take the lead over Xbox. but they reached their capacity limit. They sold only 5 millions over 3 months (over Christmas), to them it was a record. that is tiny compared to over 10 million iphones sold in 3 days, over 20 millions including China.

Amen deeddawg.. Its proposterous to think that the lack of inventory is intentional for media hype.

The fact that Apple is launching in 36 countries including China has everything to do with inventory constraints. China alone is a huge undertaking, their population is 1.4 BILLION and this is the first time Apple has been sanctioned to to sell directly in this market (not to mention 35 other countries to satisfy).

Each store has discretion on what to do with the inventory they receive (sell it for in store pickup vs hold it for walk in customers) but there is no conspiracy.

So on the "buzz generates more sales" angle I'm genuinely curious how that's supposed to work in practice.

How much media coverage outside the enthusiast sites is any of the availability generating? Not talking about launch day but now. I've seen nothing.

Who here personally knows anyone who decided to go get an iphone instead of some other phone (or who decided to upgrade now instead of later) soley because it was wasn't easily available. Not talking about scalpers. Everyone I know seems to choose their phone based on how it fits their needs, not based on how tough it is to get.

It seems (to me) to run completely counter the core business tenets of NOT making it difficult for potential customers to give you their money. All I've seen is very superficial claims with no substance. I'm open minded though, I'd love to see some deeper analysis to support the hypothesis.

Yeah.... but, you could've just waited until that was fixed and bought one then.

Not at all saying you shouldn't have bought whatever you like. You're a consumer and you're following the written return policy, so it's no big deal in my estimation.

I don't know why some of the eligibility got all screwed up, though... that is weird. It was so random. Some people have really had trouble. :(

----------

That wouldn't really be fair to people who bought and later realized they wished they'd bought something different. We cannot assume that everyone intentionally bought the wrong thing.

Restock fees have been proven to discourage buyers, and it sure would put a dent in preorders.

I don't think 20 bucks would stop most people. It would need to be a larger restock fee.

Which would discourage buyers.
Sure...restock might discourage...but that will make people think about whether they want to buy it...or consider returning it. The thing is they know what they are buying into.... there are demos at apple store. They should be checking it out before buying..or doing research. This returning thing wouldn't be fair for others who want to buy it...

Anyway...probably 40-60 bucks should do it.

Of course there isn't a conspiracy. That's paranoid thinking.

However, there is a delicate balance they aim for between "enough inventory to get phones in people's hands" and "build up buzz" and "too much stock sitting costs us money and makes us look like we make poor business decisions."

When CEOs say "we wish we could have stock for every single person who wants a phone," they mean it in theory.

However, they do NOT want to have stock sitting. Makes it look like they don't know how to efficiently gauge demand.

People clamoring for product and waiting in long lines? You look successful.

Let's be serious. If they had PLENTY of all stock during launch, would they generate such long lines for weeks?

No. People would stop by when they thought they could get in and out quickly.

People can wait for a game console, but a phone its a bit more of an urgent thing especially if you don't have one. Not to mention its Apple we're talkinga bout

In Florida. There is a huge black market (Miami, Orlando Etc). Selling to tourist from especially South America.

That's why the non Sprint phones which are super locked are still available at times.

Verizon iPhones have very high value. Because while gsm is unlocked. But Verizon CDMA chip can also be used in other countries.

Is anyone confirming stores receive zero stock at all, or is stuff coming in and either not showing up on the web or showing up briefly. I know I saw a bunch of Verizon & AT&T 16GB iphone 6's this afternoon that are all now gone, as well as a number of non-Sprint phones at various Target locations which are also now gone.

Anyone have any real minute by minute stats or is this just a "never there when I check" sort of thing?

Hey Tim Cook, product supply specialist, except for the Sprint versions, which nobody wants, both iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 Plus supplies in the US are almost completely gone (except for those hot-bed locations for Apple product fans: Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas).

SoCal: virtually no stock.
NoCal: virtually no stock.
Greater NE, USA: virtually no stock.
greater Chicago area: virtually no stock.
Seattle: Virtually no sock.
Texas: Virtually no stock.
Denver: virtually no stock.
Arizona: virtually no stock.

(I know Tim is from Alabama, so maybe playing supply-favorites with his hometown region...J/J)

Pre-ordered iPhone 6 Plus from my carrier in New Zealand on September 19, one week before NZ release. Still waiting for stock to arrive in the country. So it's not just the US.

I got my iPhone 5 2 years ago as of 10/11/12. I never remember being this tight of a supply constraint on the iPhone 5. I guess I'm lucky I was able to preorder my 6 Plus when I did. I got mine on launch day.

Worth noting that I keep looking at the maps in my area and there is only four Apple Store in the entire Southern California region that have iPhone 6's and they are all 4.7"! There are some 6 Pluses, however most are at Targets and are 16GB AT&T models.

I've been watching apple store inventories several times a day in the NY metro area for the last week. There have been NO Iphone 6's at all. Neither the standard nor plus are available at all including at the flagship 5th ave store.

That's a bit nuts.

Just another reason why folks should pre-order or just buy online. That way you at least get the phone directly from Apple and not betting it all by waiting for stores to maybe get some stock sometime.

Overly simplistic. Many people want/need to buy full price because of data plans, eligibility, etc. If there was a full price option for a Verizon pre-order, I would have done so. Because there wasn't, I'm left waiting for stock to normalize.

Definitive answer

Here is why stock is low in a nutshell.

HIGH HIGH DEMAND!

HARDER TO SOURCE THAN THEY THOUGHT.

Now that they are behind the 8-ball... Here's why they can't catch up quickly.

Next week they launch in China and 36 other countries. Arguably bigger release than US.

But lets say they have millions in backorder...that now gets split amongst several distributors equally.

You have the apple store and radio shack and target and Best Buy as major retailers. Then you have the carriers that its split between. Theres At&t and Verizon and Sprint & Tmobile. Then theres currently 25 (roughly) countries its available to. And China has to have stock READY TO GO when its launch starts.

If i could show a flow chart.... they produce one million phones and by the time it gets split between the 22 countries and the 6 major stores and the 4 major carriers.... Your local store might get 1. THAT is the problem.

Most of the backorders i'm seeing are in november....Coincidence that the November time frame is roughly a month after the china release? I think not.

Again... Those 22 countries... plus holding stock for china.... plus split between about 10 retailers means for every 1000 phones created only about 30 get to the stock channel you happen to be waiting on. For me its at&t.

I used the Apple Store app to check inventory at Apple Stores near my home. Every store within reasonable distance had nothing available to order for pickup for Verizon or AT&T.

I know people are frustrated, but the only thing to do is be patient and wait a month or two for the global launch to shake out.

If anyone near Pittsburgh, PA is looking for a Space Gray Verizon iPhone 6 with 16 GB, there are multiple stores in the area that have them available for pick up today.

I said it a few days ago, those online directories are not accurate. I currently own a 6+ that proves that.

It's all about timing and showing up at the store on time. I couldn't give you the reason as to why, but it just works.

Also, I don't think that they are necessarily playing games, but they do have a very aggressive rollout schedule. Put that together with such strong demand, underestimating the popularity of the 6+, and struggles with adequate supply = very small inventory levels everywhere.

I wish I had the luxury of being able to go to the local store (which is not far from my work) when it opens, but between work and parenting, getting there by opening time is something I am almost never able to do.

Almost two weeks have passed since the iPhone 6 Released in the states and the inventory in the apple stores just poor.
Europe inventory is updated every day and you can order almost any device, and any color without any problems.

The situation here in Florida is poor and annoying. How a huge company like Apple does not shipped iPhone to the stores !?T-mobile space gray is impossible to achieve!!
The only option here is to buy the Sprint iphone :/
pick-up in the apple web is always error in the payment :/

Just a disgrace! Instead of providing iPhones to Europe send to the States Too!! (T-mobile - Free contract!!)

Perhaps, of some international trade treaty since it's not made in America. :p. You would think we came first.

I agree that we have a supply/demand problem, but the supply so ridiculously low, even when you don't take demand into account.

Are there any Gold iPhone 6 Plus for AT&T 16GB anywhere? I've been looking every day for my mother and haven't seen anything in the past two weeks! This is checking at the usual times posted/iStockNow etc. Crazy!
