It's interesting Apple File System is ready to "go-live" on iOS. I wonder when we'll start seeing tangible and visible benefits.
You won't _see_ any difference. Certain apps might use less space. Certain operations might be quicker. Certain faults might not lead to problems, where they would have led to problems before. All things that you won't notice.

File system size between 10.2 and 10.3
Don't know if it's the new file system or just a major clean-up performed when I upgraded, but free space went from 4.2GB to 5.3GB on my iPhone 6...

Major thumbs-up...
Did you guys do an OTA update or a full update using a cable?

I'd be keen to know if even people who use OTA will have their filesystem converted.

I´m pretty sure there will be made no difference. Some people never attach their phone. Okay, to charge it.

The big deal with iOS 10.3 is that customers will be able to leave ratings and reviews without leaving the app, Apple will allow in-app prompting for reviews up to 3 times a year, and developers will be allowed to reply to these reviews.

This will be a real boon to developers who get 1-star reviews from dingbat customers who can't figure out how to do something in the app for which the other 99% of customers don't seem to have any problems at all.

That is indeed a major thing. I saw also a lot of developers and iOS users on Twitter last night discussing it. MacStories also mentioned it in this news item.

I also hope now that we can finally be able to sort reviews from newest to oldest or based on rating on the iPhone as well besides on the iPad. I always hated it when an app got updated and there aren't any recent reviews on the updated app but there are reviews from the past and that you want to see the recent reviews instead of seeing one from 2014 and then 2015 and then 2014 again.

Apple File System - When installing iOS 10.3, the iPhone's file system will be updated to use Apple File System (APFS).

Going to have to do some reading on this RE: affect across all devices i.e. one device has it installed another doesn't --- can I still move files seamlessly across platforms, is Apple using a "different" compression system, etc.

If there's even a minor bug in the new file system, you can lose all your data.

Once APFS comes to macOS, I'm sure there will be mission critical users that will choose to stay on HFS+ for years to come. They won't switch until APFS has seen lots of real world use.

Sneaking in a file system change in a point update of iOS is really a horrid action by Apple. People will update to get bug fixes not knowing the danger to their data. The change should have been deferred until a major iOS update and a new iPhone model. Those with mission critical needs could then stay behind on an old iOS on an old iPhone.

From what I've read, APFS isn't specifically "optimized" for SSD's, but rather makes use of the fast random access capability of SSD.

HFS and HFS+ were designed in a single threaded era. They were also designed for drives that are slow at random access. Therefore, the directory structures are all one big blob at the start of the disk. (Well, actually several, but they'll start out all together.) Now, in a multi core, multi threaded era, all threads have to wait their turn as a single thread accesses the file system. APFS splits the directories up so multiple threads can access the file system. The downside is that data is scattered around, but on an SSD this doesn't matter.

Let's just hope they HAVE been doing lots of behind the scenes testing of this on iOS and macOS devices well before this, so by the time it is actually released to the public it'll be perfect.
I do agree it feels like they are sneaking it into a small update when it'd be better if they waited, who knows they could still leave it out of the final release... You'd think they might've thought more about it from the whole "discoveryd" conundrum on Yosemite till 10.10.4 and iOS 8.

Whatever the reason for the extra space it is great news for those with smaller storage capacity phones, sometimes all you need is an extra gig!

'Failed' - that's my experience of HomeKit as well... :(

Any news on battery improvements? I've an iPhone 6s that isn't (currently) included in the recent unexpected shutdown program but exhibits the same behaviour. Just spoke to an Apple support agent who seemed confident 10.3 would fix the 'known issues between iOS 10.1/10.2 and the battery'.

Try 10.2.1. I´ve got an iPhone 6 and I`m happy with the battery life again.

In this example the bedroom light is most likely turn off at the switch.

This morning on my drive to work I noticed several subtle improvements to CarPlay. I felt like my experience using CarPlay was much better this morning after updating to the beta than it ever has been. I really appreciated the shortcuts for launching the most recently used apps. I've often thought this would be a nice feature as they have always done this when maps is active but you are on another app. I'm not sure if this is new but i don't recall being able to view a list of what songs are up next. I have often wanted to be able to do this when listening to an apple playlist and I noticed this ability for the first time this morning.

I've been asking for this since 10 came out (yes I sent feedback). It's like using iOS without a multitasking switcher. You have to press home everytime to switch apps. Can't wait to try it out!

i wonder if anytime update of app icons will allow for the temp, or other time affected information, to be shown on weather apps.

Makes me want to have the option in my car.

Not sure if this is new or if I just now noticed it, but now you can group lights together to act as one light. works great for my fan that has 4 bulbs. Would often just turn on one of the bulbs when asking to turn on the fan lights.

I also now have 252.37Gb capacity on my 256Gb 7. Not a biggie as I still have 142GB available. But hey, space is space. Just hope it leads to better battery utilization.

Kind of, but each app icon has to be part of the app bundle. So they can't really update it at any time. They still have to include the app icon itself in the app release.

Interesting. At least it does seem to be a step towards finally allowing 3rd party apps to have live icons à la Clock and Weather. Let's hope iOS 11 takes this one step further.

I assume the option is new, I just noticed it as well. I have lights grouped by room that I could control by room but this makes multiple bulb fixtures in a room all one "thing". As for fans and groups of lights I find for me its more cost effective and convenient to use a smart switch over a smart bulb so they can be controlled at the wall without an app.

so it depends on how many different icons they allow - so for weather they'd need every temp possible with different combinations of clouds or sun.

Anyone else unable to get the update to iOS 10.3 beta 1 to show up after they've installed the profile? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the profile, doing hard reboots, etc, but every time I do, I don't get the update just the "iOS 10.2.1 Your software is up to date" screen.
