seems like chaos in the iOS development team with two betas. Something isn't right

This isn't unprecedented for iOS, and is a perfectly valid strategy of developing multiple release branches in parallel.

Just like, say, they are also shipping macOS 10.14.6 while also pushing 10.15 Catalina betas. And, you can bet, while also already having 10.16 Death Valley alphas.

Oops I installed 13.1 on my primary driver and Imessages completely crashes with group texts. I use group texts dozens of times a day

Endless list of new stuff but still we can't:

1. have an automatic clip board for unlimited copy and paste. This is automatic with Android. We must download a separate app. And even then you have to launch the app in order to get what you copied onto a clip board. Very 1990's.

2. get haptic feedback in the keyboard. Also easy on Android.

3. get a modernized notification center. This holding on to iPhone 1 tradition is just not working.

iOS 13 betas are so buggy that Apple needed to start testing 13.1 before 13 is even out

Mail app is royally ****ed up

It might be your phone? I’ve been on every Beto since the first developer beta and haven’t had any issues with Mail.

Anybody able to confirm these two still work ?

kCGColorSpaceDisplayP3_PQ_EOTF

kCGColorSpaceDisplayP3_HLG

If they are still a Go, wide support for them is the most-important thing Apple is likely to announce on Sept 10th !

Off the Radar of most, but should NOT be !

There is always someone that says this, and I can't really address it. Whether you notice it or not, experience it or not, it is factually unequivocally unstable and in meaningful ways that would cause an uproar if seeded to the general public.

It doesn't seem to have the same level of polish as 12.0, which honestly doesn't surprise me. 12.0 by comparison had far fewer new features. Maybe Apple is going for a tick-tock cycle here where every other release focuses more on reliability and performance. (If so, I don't know that that's a good idea.)

But I can't personally say it's so unstable as to "cause an uproar".

Are a developer? No? Then don’t install “beta” software on your device then complain about stability. The entire point of betas IS finding bugs. Don’t want to test? Don’t install betas.

A lot of these people are even smart enough to know it’s them doing something wrong and they think it’s a “bug”.

Another new feature is that a long-press on the Settings icon brings up a larger “battery” glyph. Hats off to this YouTuber for finding it and being the one of the first people to put up a video on on it!

I remember the simpler times when Apple actually focused on completing a release until they moved on to the next version. The mail app is still seriously broken on iOS 13.0 and they already beta test the next version. It’s not confusing at all. Wow...

The thing people in this thread need to understand about software testing and patch releases is that feature development of iOS 13.0 stopped months ago. Internal testing started and more recently, external testing started.

During that time, the developers didn’t sit and wait for bugs. They started on the next part of the backlog under iOS 13.1. It may surprise you but they likely are already coding iOS 13.2. They do this while they fix bugs for iOS 13.0 and iOS 13.1.

On many software projects, changes made to upstream branches (i.e. fixed made to iOS 13.0) merge automatically into downstream branches (ios13.x). However on an operating system this likely only happens periodically due to the complexity and difficulty in merging the two code bases.

It’s possible that iOS 13.1 has bugs in it which have already been fixed in the latest beta of iOS 13.0 and won’t be merged into iOS 13.1 until 13.0 hits GM.

I get that it’s unprecedented for a patch release to hit beta for Apple before the .0 release goes GA but it’s really not that uncommon in software dev.

Finally, the commenter who said ios 13.1 will be taking the release date of ios 13.0.... that doesn’t speak ill of iOS 13.0, rather it means iOS 13.1 got done ahead of schedule. If true it means that the internal checks of the 13.1 features are complete and they feel confident that they can deliver them by the 13.0 release date. Personally I think that’s highly unlikely. But if true it’s not a bad thing.

well said!!!

It is NOT factually unstable.
The irony of telling someone that their experience is wrong because you have a differs experience...

Is announce messages with AirPods via Siri available? I have never seen the option to enable it. I have the AirPods second gen with no menu options.

HEVC with alpha is actually a really big deal if you're in an industry that can use it (or a developer). I'll have to see how it works but hopefully you can get small file sizes compared to the very large files using ProRes 4444.

.

That’s funny I’ve never had any really major issues with any of the releases on my Xs max ,, All the betas I’ve tested over the years this has been the least buggiest ...

Generally speaking, this is true. Mail, though...gawd what a mess that has been. the most recent beta was a lot better, but it's still got way too many issues.

1. Some would say Copy and Paste itself is very 1990's. If you're relying on Copy and Paste so much that you need a dedicated copy and paste manager, odds are you're doing something wrong. There is definitely a better way.

2. And it is pretty terrible on Android. Also terrible on all of the 3rd party iOS keyboards that have tried to implement it. It was never meant to be used this way.

3. No idea what that means. Notification Center is just fine as it is.

I bet 95% of users simply to use iOS just to launch app, tweet, instagram, facebook, watch videos and thats it. But Apple is making Pizza for 1.3 billion people here, so, there will be features that most users don’t need.

Apple today released a surprise iOS 13.1 beta, which is unprecedented as the company has never before released a point update for an unreleased software update.

iOS 13.1 was not a mistake, though, and it appears to be an update that Apple will debut shortly after the release of iOS 13, necessitating developer testing now. iOS 13.1 includes new features and brings back some features that were removed from the iOS 13 update over the beta testing period.

- Shortcuts Automations - Automations, a Shortcuts feature removed in iOS 13, has returned in iOS 13.1. With Automations, you can create personal and home automations from the Shortcuts app to have certain actions performed when specific conditions occur.

- Share ETA - Share ETA has returned to the Maps app, allowing users to share their estimated time of arrival with a friend or family member once directions to a specific place have been entered.

- Dynamic Wallpapers - Apple has made some tweaks to the available dynamic wallpapers, shifting the overall look and color of some of them. The Dynamic wallpapers previously limited to the iPhone X and later are also now available on older devices.

- AirPods Volume Indicator - When adjusting the volume of your iPhone with AirPods connected, you'll see an AirPods icon on the volume bar. This also works for Powerbeats Pro, displaying a Powerbeats icon. There's an icon for HomePod too.

- New HomeKit Icons - HomeKit devices in the Home app have updated, more detailed icons in iOS 13 beta 1. These same icons were added to the most recent macOS Catalina beta.

- Mouse Support Improvements - According to developer Steve Troughton-Smith, it's now possible to map the right click function of a mouse to the 3D Touch/long press action on an iOS device. Mouse support in iOS 13 and iPadOS is available as an accessibility option.

- TestFlight Indicator - Apps that you have installed via Apple's TestFlight app (aka apps in beta) are now denoted with a bright yellow dot next to them that's easier to see than before.

- HEVC Improvements - According to Jeremy Horwitz, iOS 13.1 adds HEVC video encoding with alpha channels for easier green screen-style compositing.

- Fonts - iOS 13 has a feature for downloading and installing fonts from the App Store. In iOS 13 beta 1, when opening up General > Fonts, there's new text that directs users to the App Store. There are no fonts apps yet, but presumably in the future this option will link to specific apps for fonts.

- Reading Goals - In the Settings app under Books, there's a new toggle to make the iOS 13 reading goals feature include time spent reading PDFs.

- Nike - In the Apple Watch app on the iPhone, Nike+ Run Club is now just "Nike Run Club," suggesting Nike and Apple are dropping the "+" branding.

Apple Watch App - In the Apple Watch app on iPhone, Display & Text Size has been renamed to Display & Brightness.

Apple Maps Collections - When deleting a collection from Apple Maps, Apple will now confirm that you want to delete it before removing it.

Know of a feature that's new in iOS 13 beta 1 that we left out? Make sure to let us know in the comments and we'll update this article.

Steve Moser contributed to this report.

Article Link: What's New in iOS 13.1 Beta 1: Share ETA and Shortcuts Automations Return, Plus More

I think this article is inaccurate. Dynamic wallpapers have been around since iOS 7. Remember the blue ball appearing and disappearing in the background? Those were the Dynamic Backgrounds.

iPhone X added new colors.

Unless this is a Mandella Effect thing and I'm in another dimension.

The current Dynamic Wallpaper feature is so primitive. Apple needs to make it more exiting, perhaps provide us some way to create our own.

Any word on whether “Communication Limits” are back under “Settings > Screen Time > Communication Limits”?

The Release Notes show that this new Beta still has some Known Issues present in the previous beta of iOS 13.
We could definitely expect Apple to release iOS 13 in a rush (some bugs included), and then 13.1 to fix the rest of the issues.
My main concern was iCloud sync issues, which seem to have been solved.
All the new features should compensate for the minor bugs.
