Things that make you go hmmmmm......

View attachment 855054
Two days ago I came out of the grocery store and saw a much older car with its hood open, trunk open, doors open, windows rolled down and soft music playing. Barely audible. It was before the after work rush and I found it creepy considering the lot was mostly empty. There wasn't a driver to be found. I wanted to put my hand near the radiator or engine to see if it was warm but decided against it.

I've seen a lot of weird and dangerous stuff overseas, and in life generally, but some stuff really manages to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

They pay relocation expenses, since I never intended to stay here beyond the required 2 years I got a military lease on my apartment.

The big reason to go back though is I came here alone, my wife and daughter are still there.

If I’m alone when I come back here five years from now I’ll probably buy a small house so I have a stateside address.

I knew you were married, but I had no idea you had a kid. That must be tough on everyone involved. Skype or whatever people use these days isn't as good as a physical hug.

He invited himself in, and I was still in the laugh-and-keep-saying-yeah phase of my social protocol.

Maybe he was socially dysfunctional or kept repeating himself because he may have been caught doing something he shouldn't have been doing?

Sometimes, you just can't think of everything... but it could help.

This is why design is important!

There are many, many ways that Disney gets you, and at their theme parks, it’s usually with all manner of souvenirs. Sure, you may be on the brink of heat exhaustion in the Florida sun and in desperate need of a soda, any soda, but wouldn’t you rather one of these little bottles of Sprite that look like “thermal detonators” from the Star Wars film franchise? Well, too bad for Disney, because according to the TSA, the novelty bottles aren’t allowed on either carry-on or checked luggage, due to their resemblance to weapons.

Deciding how much of a bathroom remodel to do, now that the leaky toilet is pulled and the soon-to-be-replaced section of subfloor is exposed. :(

In for a penny...

New water proofing, tiles, cabinet with sink and toilet should do nicely. Maybe a new bath or shower?

Star Wars is overrated.

As someone who came close to being named after the protagonist (but managed to make it out with Luke as a middle name instead), I concur. My younger brothers weren't so lucky…

Where's my ban hammer?

Oh my bad, I am not a mod and saw it was Star Wars not Trek. Otherwise me, @Scepticalscribe and @SandboxGeneral and others would have come down on you like a ton of bricks.

Seriously though have gotten away from discussing fandom because the whole "toxic fandom" thing is quite real. I like X you don't, for me that's cool. Same reason I post less in the tech side of the site except for practical advice/info.

On the other hand if you hate cheese I will report you.

A new floor for sure. And we’re now considering repurposing a wooden sideboard/table-ish piece of furniture into a more interesting vanity. Question is, one sink or two? Needing them both at the same time is a very rare event, in our experience. The simplicity of a single sink on a largish vanity is appealing.

The two main decisions to be made are whether or not to 1) steal space from the adjacent bedroom via a bumpout to accommodate a set of shelves and provide a bit more width to the bathroom, and 2) replace the tub/shower combo with a dedicated shower, with a built-in bench for when we become old and enfeebled. Aging in place, I believe it’s called. Anyway, #1 is invasive and time consuming, though not particularly expensive. The latter, #2, is invasive, time consuming, and expensive. And there are obvious functional and aesthetic benefits to doing either or both.

What to do with the toilet is an interesting question. It is intact (the wax ring was the source of the leak), but a late ‘70s vintage. Five gallons per flush sound about right? However, since we’re on a well and septic system, the incentive to replace it with a more water-efficient model is not so great. From an aesthetic standpoint, particularly with the repurposed antique vanity, one could argue either replacing or keeping the original.

What to do? Now that the toilet has been removed, I’m actually starting to enjoy this. God help me.

Ah, yeah. I know what you mean.

That's nice, actually. Is it going to be rural this time? Or near a "major" city again? One of our neighbors, who are an older couple, had two of their kids, officers, stationed in Germany for years. They had a really tough time adjusting back to the US when they were reassigned to a US post. One of them had spent a good 7 years over there doing who knows what. They were really amazed with food prices here. They hadn't really changed, it just goes further than the Euro. Once you get used to life there, it's a culture shock coming back here. I'd have to ask, but I'm pretty sure he got posted overseas again.

My home is in the Bavarian farm lands but work will be in the city yet again. Since my daughter is old enough now to occasionally want a break from real life so I'll get a bigger apartment this time so the family or just her can come hang out.

Germany is a popular place for soldiers to retire to no matter their rank, in my last office over there there were only two of us out of the 14 that weren't retired. While it's nice to have all that experience in the office it makes it hard to break in because they all have 20-30 years of built in network. That problem has been mitigated a bit since they started enforcing rotation rules but it's still a system and we all work it to include myself.

Good luck with the move and I hope you enjoy it & find it fulfilling both from a personal and professional perspective.

It's a promotion and probably my couple years of working installation management. It'll be nice to have something comfortable to transition back to but I more than ready to go back to working for soldiers.

In any case my wife and daughter are ready for me to come home and I'm ready to get back to the slower German pace of life again.

Yeah, I love me some Star Trek. I still watch watch at least 1 episode of Star Trek every day. Usually I put TOS or TNG on when it's time for bed and set the sleep timer. I like Star Wars too, but Star Trek is where it's at for me.

I'm not a rabid crazy person when it comes to fandom. At the end of day, it's all just entertainment really. That doesn't mean I don't take Trek canon seriously though. They better get it right or I'll be annoyed.

Aw, bliss to both posts.

Yes, I take Trek canon pretty seriously, too.

There was a time when my mother and I used to watch STNG together religiously every night.

Happy days and nights and memories.

Actually, I remember the night we watched "Qpid" together, the episode where the bridge crew (and Vash) are sent by Q to Sherwood Forest, with Captain Picard transformed into a reluctant Robin Hood who is supposed to rescue a most duplicitous and possibly treacherous Vash, a wonderfully subversive (and not remotely submissive) Maid Marian. Q, of course, is the even more duplicitous and treacherous Sheriff of Nottingham.

My mother spent the entire episode helpless with laughter - she really enjoyed it, the subverting both of the STNG universe (and that of the world of Robin Hood).

Actually, I recall her saying to me afterwards that she thought that the cast must have hugely enjoyed themselves making that episode, and must have had a lot of fun doing so.

What's been on my mind:

That for years I have been fascinated by macOS and how things were/are done. How instead of having a start menu ( windows ) you need to look through finder to open a files, look for pictures, music... In windows I only used 3 keyboard shortcuts in the Mac I find it more fun to use shortcuts I know more than 20 so far. I always knew I was going to love the Mac. :)

It's called File Explorer in Windows. No one goes around looking for specific files through the Start menu. That's terribly inefficient.

File Explorer has been there since Windows 95. If you know where you put something, I suppose it could be worth the effort. However, with title and full-text search, you could simply hit the Windows key on your keyboard, type away, and have your files come up. Or search for just files using a specific container, a file type, resolution (photos), or simply larger or smaller than X file size. Furthermore, quite a lot of OSX/macOS shortcuts are easily done with a single key and a mouse click or drag in Windows. OSX/macOS complicates things.
