I was halfway planning the week before I realized about the existence of Wednesday. Now I am faced with the choice between either re-doing the plan or starting a movement for the abolition of Wednesday’s. I am tempted by the latter.

I have just the shirt for you.

After Mon and Tue.jpg

One of my brothers was stalked by one of my cats for awhile when the bro was staying at my place while finishing up at school in NYC. The cat would leap out at him from under a credenza or from atop the piano without warning, and not in a playful way. I mean to the point where my brother would wrap an Army blanket around himself when not fully dressed, to protect his shoulders and legs.

I was spending a lot of overtime at work during that era and slowed down enough one weekend to notice that the bro had quit complaining and the cat had quit acting that way. So of course I asked about it. Bro shrugged. "Beats me," he said. "Good kitty," he added, scratching the cat under its chin...

Years later he confessed that he had finally started feeding the cat tablespoons-full of lean ground beef and putting far more celery and bread crumbs into the meatloaf and meatballs for the meals he had kindly offered to start preparing for us while I was so busy at work...

Hi all

so glad today is over.

rant on/

This job and I do not mix, I knew that almost immediately upon starting there. I understand some of the criticisms from today’s 3 month evaluation, but as I hope my-soon-to-be-coworkers-again said ’you made a mistake leaving my prior job’. Yes, I did.

And today the big boss had the balls to ask me to voluntarily come in on Wednesdays after dragging me through the mud during this evaluation. I was told if I was at the office, I would be terminated because I am not learning their methods fast enough, amongst other things. Some legit, others just an excuse to be jerks.

I declined.

Now I have gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining) from the stress of this job.

Almost every other job (save one) there were always attorneys, staff, HR and the founder of the company, who praise my work ethic, personality etc.

Well, I am grateful I have money coming in and that mom and I are okay, but lesson learned. My health is not worth it.

/rant off

Anyway, I hope you are all well.

Well, I've decided to keep my age old username the way it is, no changes will be made.

BTW, I call my cat's "sir" and they call me "hey dummy." :p

Hm.

Actually, "Hey dummy" sounds almost affectionate and comradely; I would have thought something on the lines of "thank you, servant," or worse, a casually dismissive, "well done, my slave," more likely.

No it's not.
Just remember: whatever this is, it's temporary. Also, whatever this obstacle is, it will make you stronger if you approach it as a learning opportunity.
Pretty soon this will be just a bad memory.

You're way too positive. The above happens if the cat is in an exceptionally good mood. Most likely, they will just ignore us whatever we do as we're not worthy of even a tiny slice of their attention and dignity.

No.

Your health is not worth it.

Will you be able to return to your old position, your previous job, and, if so, when will you be able to start?

Any chance of some sort of a break between jobs?

The very best of luck with it.

Previous job wants me back. :) Unfortunately, there is no timeline as to when both firms I report to will reopen. I contact the previous job every two months or so, just to remind them I am here.

As far a break in between, unsure, as this current job is keeping me on ‘a little while longer’ (Whatever that means.)

I will investigate unemployment next week, just to be ready.

@yaxomoxay Thank you. I am grateful this is temporary.

I miss having a cat overlord in our house. ;)

Thanks again for listening and the advice everyone.

This clearly is not a good work situation for you, and after today's three-month evaluation, it sounds as though the discomfort is mutual -- this is simply not a good fit. Have you already submitted your resignation? Planning to do so soon? It sounds to me as though this is probably the best approach at this point. While in some ways it could be tempting to simply wait to be fired or given a graceful "laid off" kind of termination so that you would be eligible for unemployment benefits, that is risky, especially now during this time of COVID-19 when unemployment offices are more than swamped with applications and are far behind in getting benefits out to people on a timely basis.

As SS has suggested, have you checked with your former employers and seen whether or not it would be possible to return to a position there?

Definitely keep checking with the previous employers and also be mindful as to the pros and cons of resigning voluntarily from a job versus being laid off versus being frankly fired, as there are implications in all three scenarios.

@Clix Pix gives & tenders some sage advice.

Are both firms "closed" closed, or covid-closed, or allowing employees to work from home?

In your shoes, I would contact the previous employers a little more frequently than every two months, (perhaps every month?) and remind them that you are available.

While I agree that this position is a very poor fit, and working in a job you dislike where you are not respected is an especial version of hell, do - as @Clix Pix counsels - try to think through which option (being fired, laid off, or resigning) would work best for you, and try to avoid whichever of them is the least agreeable.

The very best of luck with it.

What if in 2020, the age of the Sun was 5 billion years older than it really is? Say we’d be 1 or 2 years away from it going red giant and engulfing the orbit of Earth.

I wonder what our collective priorities as humanity would be in that situation.

In a misanthrophic moment, I would argue that our priorities in such a situation may well include bribing, bullying or murdering our way onto the last shuttle to depart for Pluto.

For sure it would be more fun to be like we are now, looking through very high powered telescopes at distant events like star collapses already billions of years in the past.

But I suppose we'd not be much different to how we are currently? Arguing about whose fault it is when there's no good way out of a crisis, never mind that that one would be the last one we'd end up facing together.

Bribe, bully or murder our way onto the last shuttle to depart for Pluto.

I seem to have misplaced my rose colored glasses in considering this question, so I figure the scene would be something like that, yes. But it might take too long to get there.

(If only that pesky Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists didn't have the minute hand on its Doomsday Clock so darn close to midnight already. The sun turning into a red giant is a big problem but we won't get a chance to resolve that one if we're not going to deal with the ones that doomsday clock is all about).

Sorry to hear that. You are right no job is worth risking your health.
All good here. Off work for a week. Been busy putting up some shelves and taking a load of rubbish to the tip now they are open again.

Of course the beautiful sunshine we did have is all gone. Replaced by wind and rain. No doubt when I’m back in the office next week, it will be brilliant sunshine again!

See, I need to have a more creative username. I mean Lasagne Box Nerd screams Garfield the Cat.

Job: I’d prefer to resign, but would rather do it closer to knowing when these firms reopen (they are Covid closed). The Director of HR said he would be in touch when he has a better idea of when they’ll reopen, so I am not worried.

As far as this job, just soldier on for now, just make sure their toxicity doesn’t bother me anymore.

And that is that,

Though if our sun was two years away from going red giant, I’d quit the job so fast and just try to enjoy as much of those two years as possible.

Thanks to @Clix Pix and @Scepticalscribe and everyone again. 🤗 You are all the best.

I'm impressed. I like that Spelling Bee puzzle in the NYT every day that provides seven letters (one of them a "required" letter) to try to make words out of, but I'm not reliably good at the challenge and would never have guessed one could turn "SandboxGeneral" into any of those phrases!

What's on my mind right now is why the hell is Apple not making any meaningful improvements to Mail? Seriously people, where is scheduled mail? Where is proper out of office handling? Where is a proper integration with Notes and Reminders? Why are the email folders still setup like it's 1999?

Who is the jerk responsible for Mail and how can I send him or her an angry letter? 😂 😂 😂

I’m actually moving in less than a month to start a job I never thought I would actually be doing. It’s starting to scare the crud out of me.
