Our fence guy started destroying the garden today. Now our fence line is the back of next doors chicken coup. I mentioned to them that the posts on the coup were a little wobbly. She said that’s okay the chickens had stopped laying (they were getting on a bit), and she’d not be too bothered if they all left! I had to chuckle. I said what if Mr fox got there first? Yes that’d work as well!

Will she get new chickens for the spring?

The stall in the farmers' market with the best eggs (free range, organic, etc) have told me that their hens lay for between 18 months to two years; after that, yes, they are "gettingv on a bit". So, each year, they have both some new ones and some from the previous year, and the very last of those hens who started laying two years earlier.

No. She said the novelty has worn off for the kids. Plus she’d rather have the garden back. They have a smallish garden.

Fair enough.

But, nothing - and I mean nothing - beats the taste of fresh, (free range, possibly organic) locally sourced, and produced, eggs.

Once you have started eating, enjoying, appreciating, them, there is no way - ever - that you can revert to shop bought eggs. The difference in taste and quality is just too stark.

The battery health really is just a guess. It had hit 97% really quickly but oddly went up to 98% today.

I'm not complaining. The longer this battery stays good, the less I have to worry about losing my jailbreak during a battery change.

Just finished my long work day. Had a quick catch up with a friend. He’s feeling quite low. His mother’s had a stroke and he can’t go visit etc. She’s in her 90’s so a big worry at the moment.

I was looking through a list of shows I might want to watch, and came across the name "Pandora". It's a show I watched a few episodes of a couple of years ago until I decided that it was too silly even for me.

However that name "Pandora" reminded me of a scene from the film "Avatar".

The film starts off with a distopian world not dissimilar to "Blade Runner", then moves to the crippled hero landing on a far-away planet, being ragged by others, and turning up late into the Safety Lecture.
This lecture is being given by a bloke who has this lovely gravely, drawn-out accent -- Paandoorrraa.
I immediately felt at home like I never have been in any film.
I have been in safety lectures like this, and I have given safety lectures like this. Not quite as extreme, but still along the lines of "if you don't follow the rules, you may die".

If I ever have to give a safety lecture again, I might start it with that clip.

That's what's on my mind tonight.

A wet, dark, dreary, dismal, overcast, day.

The bins have been put out, emptied, and returned to their respective niches, I am debating whether (or not) to put on a wash, but I am preparing some chilli. No debate there.

The dark and frankly depressing weather has become more noticeable in its effects on my state of wellness than in any past years. Perhaps part of it comes from a nostalgia for Arizona, with its generally consistent Sun. More and more I miss being there, even that the last neighborhood I lived in was quite disruptive on my well being. When I lived in Washington state for 9 years, the rain and darkness did not bother me so much, even that I had already experienced the Arizona sun.

But now it's exacerbating the feeling that this season is just a drag, towards the hopeful recovery of the world from the nightmare it has been in for so long. Once it has recovered enough to make my border crossings legal, I am going to attempt a return to Arizona, maybe Bullhead City this time. I quite enjoyed my time there in the mid 90s. Even once I had moved to Kingman, trips to Bullhead were always a highlight of the month.

Perfect weather for chilly. Do enjoy.
Our recycling bin was also collected today.
The rest of the fence and ivy etc has been removed down one side. The rest he’ll rip out tomorrow. Then he’ll start putting it back. I don’t envy him that task. Digging all those post holes.

Yes, it is perfect weather for chilli.

Actualy, the chilli has been in the oven (a slow oven) for three and a half hours now, and there was an hour's prep prior to that; now, it is time to add the sautéed onions and sautéed minced garlic. Tomatoes, coffee, chilli (both sweet and hot chilli), cumin, coriander, tomato puree and stock were added hours ago.

The kidney beans will be added in around an hour's time.

Sounds a lot tastier than our stir fry. No sugar? Mrs AFB used to put sugar in her recipe.

Yes, - well spotted - yes, there is sugar, as this is a (rare enough) recipe that actually calls for sugar, and one, moreover, where the addition of some sugar makes a tangible difference to the taste of the finished dish.

Sugar went in with the tomatoes, (plus the other spices) and another spoon of sugar was dissolved in a mug of black coffee which I added to the stock after two and a half hours.

Yes sugar often accompanies tomato purée in dishes.
Do enjoy when it is finally ready. What will you be serving it with?

And tinned toatoes - I used a tin of Italian San Marzano tomatoes, as well as tomato puree.

Actually, I sketched out the full recipe in the "what is for dinner?" thread.

This evening, I am not sure, perhaps rice, possibly just bowls of chilli.

Tomorrow - as I shall have seconds, and this is the sort of dish that improves its flavour with time - I shall certainly serve rice.

Actually, I had to remind myself to put the sugar bowl (of brown sugar) laid out alongside, or beside, the rest of the ingredients before I started the prep, - these days, I always set out all of the ingredients in advance - as I might have forgotten about it (and did, once, last year, and was kicking myself as a result).

A sensible approach. We used to have it with rice, jacket potato’s or wrapped in tortillas. I miss Mrs AFB’s chilli.

Snowing for the second day in a row. Indeed, there are a good few millfurlongs, hands, or other obscure measurements of snow on the ground. Which is a bit jarring, since the last time this has happened here was several years ago. Still, nothing better than taking an evening stroll while it's snowing. Actually there are a couple of things that are better, but still.

What's not nice is that the temperature is supposed to really dive in the the coming days, and I don't have any gloves big enough to fit this miserable potato of a finger of mine. Might have to wear a wool sock (I only own red ones) on one hand, but I guess as far as fashion accessories go it won't be the most outrageous one out there.

Maybe you can find some on Amazon, and have it shipped ASAP.

Well, it is a filthy evening; I think that rice is called for, as I don't have tortillas (what an excellent idea) and am not about to prepare jacket potatoes.

So, the rice cooker has been summoned into action.

Dinner was absolutely delicious, though I say so myself, and yes, it was served with rice.

Washing up done.
