I think I am out of discussing and possibly even reading about current politics forever. This is not a political post, but mostly a psychological self evaluation. I just removed about 400 people from my Twitter (which I barely use), and I’ll possibly do the same w/ Facebook. After a while it becomes self preservation.

I can completely understand this. Everything has become incredibly ugly and it puts a lot of stress on ones heart and mind. It's far healthier to distance yourself from it. I should follow this example myself.

Go for it. I encourage you to take even further if you can. I'm on no social media, none, but I used to be on Twitter/Instagram/Discord and I don't even remember what else. Time has proven I'm not missing anything and that buzzy static that took up more brain space that I wanted to hand over is gone. Ah .... the quiet.

I have bookmarked a couple family members' Twitter accounts used in their professional lives, and can read their updates. If I want to respond, I simply call or email them.

Oh I’ll do it. I have avoided Social Media for months at a time and I am all for digital minimalism. Right now I can’t remove social media (namely Facebook) for personal reasons which are temporary in nature.

On my mind...
What to do tomorrow if it snows as much as they are forecasting. 🤔

Same here. Currently estimates here vary between 20 and 40 centimeters (which is like, what, about seven hundred and twenty-four inches in U.S. customary units..?) of snow sometime between Monday and Wednesday. Now, there's already some snow here and I don't mind snow one bit, on the contrary, but still, one can't help but feel unprepared as it all seems to hit at once. Let's see what actually ends up happening.

Which reminds me, I need to weatherproof my boots.

Have a great Saturday everyone!

It's between 1 and 2 millfurlongs, or 2 to 4 hands.

That is all very well - and to some (even a considerable) extent, an excellent idea, - but, if one works in an analytical capacity, and has studied and taught (and thought about) history and politics, and current affairs, it is not something that may be possible to put into practice, in real life.

Having said that, there are days wehn even I choose to seek refuge in history, or fiction.

I think a social media detox, (or certainy, a situation whereby one limits, or seeks to exercise or exert a degree of control in one's use of social media) is an excellent idea.

These days, with Covid, I never take my phone with me when I am out; granted, as my mother is no longer with us, I am not likely to need to be in a situation where I can send or receive emergency calls, and, as social life is suspended, the chances of receiving unexpected invitations somewhere are also a lot less likely, but, still, it is a liberation to head out without it, untethered.
Yes, we’re going to get some snow!!
I loathe snow.

And ice, and sleet and hailstones.

I had a Twitter account that I only used to contact businesses. I have since deleted said account and now have no social media accounts. I never did FB, Instagram or Discord etc.

I prefer to use RSS feeds to get the news I want when I want it, without having to read a bunch of mindless drivel, which is how I view most of the social media ongoings.

Friends are nice to have. I am not interested in having a bunch of followers that don't seem to exist outside of the social media box of FB and the like.

I am old school and prefer the direct approach with people, whenever possible.

To a large extent, I am old school as well on such matters.

I find Twitter pretty useful: I have an account on Twitter - but don't often Tweet - to keep an eye on some stuff; when working abroad, I have noticed that political people, politicians, journalists, and commenators, (including sometimes diplomats) can be more informal, more informtive and more frank on Twitter than from more official sources.

It can also be very handy for keeping an eye out for interesting articles, or reviews, or comments on concerts, or performances, or when someone you respect recommends a piece to read, or take a look at.

On the other hand, I have no interest whatsoever in FB, and never had.

Absolutely. I never created a FB or Twitter account. Never had an interest in them. Just a platform selling your data for their benefit. Not yours.

Valid and useful point. I suppose if there were a way to automatically block people outside of who I wanted to read, so that I wouldn't have to see any other tweets or posts, that might be amenable to me, depending on the platform.

What's good about MR, is that I don't have to see a bunch of ads, or read a bunch of foul mouth posts from people with a very limited vocabulary and outlook. As a general rule, we don't have to deal with crazy outside of stumbling into the PRSI forum by accident, or from a newbie account created to sow discord. People here respond in helpful ways with a slice of fun on the side. I like that versus trying to wade through a lot of minutia on social media were everything and everyone seems to be deemed offensive and outrageous regardless of what may have been said or done. It is the internet version of Monty Python's Flying Circus without the witty humor.

I usually do take my iPhone with me when going out of the house, especially when driving somewhere, not so much in order to receive calls or check my incoming email but rather to have the phone to use if there is an emergency situation and I need to call someone. Also, in the car, the iPhone does act as my music provider, too, through the stereo system in the car. If I'm just going out on a walk around the lake and shooting photos I usually leave the phone at home since I won't be gone all that long and the phone would be a distraction if I did receive an incoming email or call.

As for FB and Twitter, I have accounts on both but tend to neglect Twitter, and only check FB because I am in a couple of groups on there which are related to subjects of interest to me. Also I do keep in touch with a few distant, not-close friends through FB rather than through emails and texts, but the majority of my contacts are through the latter. I keep my FB account pretty locked-down and private, too, and my friends list fairly small.

I rarely write anything personal about myself on FB and took the precaution of providing a different birthday/birthdate than my actual one. For a while I got away with using Clix Pix as my screen name but they eventually nailed me and insisted that I use a real name so I relented on that, but going with the shortened nickname version of my first name rather than the more formal one.

Wait? Clix Pix isn’t your real name? I can’t believe you deceived us like this! Clearly my first name is Apple! ;)

It is useful for contact tracing - I received this notification a couple of weeks back. Fortunately I didn’t have it.

I never downloaded the app.
I was unsure initially, but decided it was the right thing to do. Our numbers are climbing rapidly here, so I’m hoping it remains quiet :) We’ve been staying home as much as possible, but work starts again tomorrow.

On my mind, therefore, is: will I sleep?
