5am and walking our schnauzer at the local park, and about 15 minutes in to the walk we come out of the stand of fir trees and I have a clear view of the still dark morning sky. as the dog is doing his morning constitutional I glance up and spot the Big Dipper and then I notice what I assume is a meteor(?) traveling south southwest to the north northeast. it appears to be traveling at a steady speed, the light it emits is a dull white, and to put in to perspective it's size, to the naked eye (yes, my eye is a nudist..lol) the stars would be this size . and the meteor(?) would be about this size __ and I stood there and watched it for about 20 minutes till it was out of sight. after returning to the house I have been watching the morning news, but nothing has been reported about what I saw. curious as to what it might have been?
It could be Starlink.

Have a long wait (2 or 3 hours) this morning during a personal errand; went to the store to buy a couple of nice physical newspapers. Nada, they don’t sell them anymore. Same goes for Starbucks (what’s the point of a cafe without newspapers and/or chess?). I understand the business reasons, but it saddened me.

A café without newspapers?

Sigh.

Even for (possible) health reasons, let alone profit reasons, this is something I deeply regret.

I subscribe from time to time; reason I don’t now is mostly a matter of money. If I could I would subscribe to physical editions of WSJ, NYT, and two local papers.
In our old house we used to get local papers delivered, but they went straight into the recycling. Here its a bit too remote for that and that's fine by me. I can think of better things to fill my recycling bin with!

Years ago I stopped getting the print version of The Washington Post delivered to my home, and instead began reading it online and when they implemented the paywall and required a subscription, I promptly subscribed. I have to have my daily news fix!

That said, I do miss having a physical paper to read, but I don't miss having them pile up and needing to dispose of them!

As a kid, I sorta had a tactile disorder that caused me to hate a lot of textures. It's mostly gone, but one that has stuck with me slightly is a dislike of the feeling of paper (think of nails on a chalkboard but to a lesser extent). It's not detrimental; I didn't have any problems doing schoolwork or sketches in college.

In any case, I actually prefer less tactile nature of e-books to physical books, but I do love the smell of old books. The organic materials in the paper break down and release chemicals that smell acrid and like almond and vanilla.

I'm tempted to light one of these while reading my Kindle:

That'd be a pretty cool anachronistic experience. :)

I subscribe to The Times (London) digital edition but do occasionally buy the print version as I did this morning.

When abroad, I must say that I found online news media (I have subscribed to the Guardian, The Economist and the FT) invaluable, but, for the sheer, physical pleasure of reading a paper, nothing beats an actual newspaper in the hand.

@AngerDanger: I have tactile issues - but with the texture of fabric: I loathe, abominate, detest and cannot wear manmade fibres - all of my clothing must be natural, (cotton, preferbly organic, or wool), but never had such issues with actual paper.

I love the physical feel of newpapers, of books (real books), of note-books (with good quality paper), and physically enjoy the actual act of reading a book, or newspaper or writing in a note-book with good quality paper (the sort of paper you can find in quality products from Germany or Japan).

There is a fungus that gets into books and furniture in the tropics. It doesn't damage them, but it gives them a unique smell. When I open any of the books from my youth in PNG (the few I have left), I am instantly transported back.

Today is the one year anniversary of me (and too many fellow industry workers) being out of a job on account of covid. Granted, I've been on some gigs, but two hands worth of fingers are more than enough to count them. I'd really like to blame someone for all of this, but that's not exactly productive since that will get you nowhere. Then again, I could blame myself for not getting a "proper" job and diversifying my skill set in the first place, so thankfully there are options if the need to place blame suddenly strikes.

Still, things are pretty good. Parents got the first vaccination recently and everyone close to me has stayed healthy. It's snowing outside, which is nice. Beer still works, so that's a definite plus.

Have a great weekend everyone!

A year out of work? I couldn't begin to imagine. If I added all the time together I've not been working since I left school 3 decades or so ago I doubt it would come to more than a few weeks. Must be tough. I feel that Covid has really divided society more than ever. There are those who have been trying to fill their time due to redundancy or furlough. Then there are those like me who have been picking up the slack for furloughed colleagues and working nearly all the hours in a day.

Shame I'm not paid by the hour! I'd be minted.

Hope things change for the better soon. The end is in sight (I hope!).

Hard day in the (home) office today. Now, booze, TV and a lie in and day off before starting again on Monday.

Mefisto; Hope things pick ups and you find something soon.
