I want to go ahead and get a charger now for the iPhone 8 Plus I'll preorder on Friday, as I expect most to sell out when people get their new shiny.

Anyone have any experience with the Qi standard chargers? Especially those that are fast-charge capable?

Amazon links welcomed without affiliate content. Thanks!

Don't bother, wireless charging will not be available until 11.0.1 or higher. Also fast charging requires a different brick that you have to purchase from Apple. Sorry to burst your bubble

I have not heard that the product needs to be Apple related. Where did you read this? My understanding is ANY of the wireless products (Mophie etc.) will "fast charge" your device once the software update you refer to comes out.

Meant to say info from Apple, was half asleep. My bad

Fast charge is dependent on the adapter you use at the wall. 29w+ will fast charge I believe.

All Qi mats should work.

Sucks iPad charger won't work anymore

In order to take advantage of the fast charging, am I reading this correctly that you'll need:

- An iPhone 8, 8 Plus, or X device

- The new software update to come out

- A wireless charger (such as the Mophie one promoted by Apple on Tuesday)

- A Lightning-to-USB-C cable

- A USB-C Power Delivery-compatible charger

Am I correct?

Fast charging is not available via wireless, to my knowledge.

It’ll take: a 29w or higher charge “brick” and an iPhone 8/8+/X. Not sure where the software update thing is coming from? The only hardware capable hasn’t been released yet. May be missing something though.

I don't believe the new apple wall bricks have been released yet to utilize fast charging. I am sure, like their charging pad, it will come at a later date

Any of the Apple USB-C chargers (for macbook or macbook pro), coupled with a USB-C to lightning cable, will allow fast-charging. I've been fast-charging my 12.9" iPad Pro for over a year like this.

Wireless fast charge is a different thing. There have been several iterations of the Qi standard, and I believe the latest charges at up to 10W. I don't know if the iPhone 8 or X can charge at that rate wirelessly.

The tech spec pages for the Qi-capable phones don’t specify which version of the standard they’re using, but I’m assuming qi fast charging isn’t included, otherwise Apple would use it as a selling point.

Why do you doubt it? They have done this before; it's not new territory for them to ship point releases in time for people who receive the devices to have full functionality.

For people to get portrait mode almost took 2 months, plus something like wireless charging wouldn't be introduced in say 11.0.1 that's a major thing software wise so it'll probably be 11.1 before we see it so I expect November before wireless charging is enabled
