Wow long post but from a quick skim , when do you think people should go outside then?

I’ve been living like normal already, enjoying my friends, girlfriends, bars, restaurants, etc

I can’t remember the first thing I did though lol

Right. It's always hard to remember the future, I get that.

While waiting for time travel and other issues to resolve themselves, perhaps you should do a little research on your current avatar (the statue of Liberty) and maybe even find a different one.

Here's a clue, to get started: the statue was a gift to the USA from France, which you probably know, but its original name was "Liberty Enlightening the World".

"Liberty" was a controversial idea in the 19th century. To many people it suggested violence and revolution. Laboulaye and Bartholdi agreed that their monument should not be seen as leading an uprising, but rather as lighting the way, peacefully and lawfully. A key element was the name they gave to the Statue: Liberty Enlightening the World. Bartholdi's public monuments hailed back to classical images of a powerful, honorable national authority over any ideology. His statue of "Liberty Enlightening the World" would be above conservatism and liberalism and above radical revolutions and political turmoil. She would be an international symbol of liberty, justice, and democracy. In 1871, the Statue was transformed from idea into reality - it was to be funded, built, and presented to the United States.
This fits right into the USA's political conflicts now over whether liberty itself or liberty with justice for all is more important in our dealings with the Covid-19 pandemic. This is a public health crisis that currently washes over us without respect to anything but whether we've been infected (or immunized) yet or whether we still present a possible fresh host for the blasted thing.

To the extent no one knows for sure about our own or another's virus status, and since the virus is highly contagious with potential for spikes in infections that can overwhelm (again, or for the first time) local hospital facilities and emergency responders, then it would seem to behoove us all to follow guidelines on social distancing and mask-wearing... yes, even as various regions and municipalities reopen their economies, since more of us will daily become exposed to each other and so potentially to the coronavirus.

So why on earth would you choose to ignore guidelines that even your own local authorities have likely recommended?

What are the guidelines? I read the transcript of the mayors speech and it’s pretty straight forward

And what about knowing the future? What?

If you have read a transcript of a mayor's speech then you must be up to date on guidelines for how best to approach the reopening of your local economy. If not, just post a link to the transcript of his remarks and members here can probably help you figure out what he meant by whatever he said.

As for remembering the future, that was almost certainly a joke. :)

The short version of everything that's said to the op goes in one ear and out the other. Will never listen to anyone. There's an equal mix of story telling and wishful thinking in all his threads.

I know I don't help matters but I've always been fond of a bit of comedy. 😂

As for relaxing rules, going (or not) out etc, I can cope with all that just fine either way. It's the dread of knowing it will almost certainly be well into next year before we can confidently take international flights. And who knows what kind of restrictions will be placed on travelers.

Yep... plus it remains to be seen how damaging all this will have been upon sports and entertainment.

For a broke upstate region but near enough to NYC to have attracted a lot of writers and artists, we have a whole lot of art, theatre and music oriented groups whose festivals or regular fall stage or concert schedules are now being cancelled.

Those notices plus uncertainties about the county and state fairs are kinda putting a dampener on usual summer plans even as the Southern Tier region of NYS gets the green light to re-open.. with precautions.

Also, NYC residents who provide summer revenues to local businesses in townships up here seem not to be coming up the way they usually do, not least because they were urged to delay opening their seasonal residences. They were also told to notify county health officials of their arrival, and informed they would be asked to self quarantine for a couple weeks afterwards. It all puts a dismal sort of flavor onto what is usually a time of welcoming back old friends and freshening up seasonal residences just in time for big blasts on the Fourth of July.

Color us a kind of faded red white and blue for the holiday this year I guess. I usually make a folk art flag for the occasion, can't decide yet on the design for this unusual year. Flag gonna fly though, whatever it ends up looking like. And there will probably still be socially distanced parades in the little towns, and picnics where maybe we need three or four blankets to sit on instead of just a couple. Wonder if by next year this time it will be more like "the old normal".

Oxford University have a treatment that could be as close as we can get as revealed today.

Technically it was revealed a few weeks ago and is a modified version of another vaccine they were working on. They plan on going to phase 2 human testing in a short while. It's demonstrated significant results in animals close to our genetic makeup administered the vaccine and repeatedly exposed to COVID19, whereas subjects not vaccinated caught it. Supposed to go to people who match certain criteria and are front line workers most at risk.

I think a lot of states have eased restrictions or completely done away with them.

In my state the “stay at home” order is over thank goodness. Finally.

What’s the first thing you’re doing now that we’re free again? Haha
Going to rush to the beach and down a cold one

You didn't answer my question. I asked what the doomsayers have got wrong?

I didn't say we should all stay at home for weeks, months or years. I said a second wave might not come for weeks, months or in the winter. Which is why we shouldn't automatically assume it won't come after just a week or two.
He/she doesn't answer questions, theres no truth to this thread, it's a fantasy thread, but quite entertaining none the less, if it wasn't so serious it would be sad, but it's laughable really, because it can not be real.

I'm on a warning from the mods, so I'm trying to be careful, if anyone looks at the figures and considers the situation in the OP's home country, there is no way a level headed citizen could make such reckless comments and feel confident.

A quite well known saying is " ignorance is bliss", seems quite appropriate here.

If it doesn’t make sense to me why would I listen to it?

Because "it" is not all about you.

Others also live - or, try to - on this world, and on, and in, our respective countries and continents.

Rest of the world, shakes head.

The rest of the world might be surprised to hear that most Americans are completely oblivious to the rest of the world, by choice.

Even if they came out with a vaccine there’s a 99.99% chance I’m not getting it.

I’ve been talking to my fellow Americans and many of us are EXTREMELY skeptical.

I’m not completely part of the anti-vaxx movement here in USA, I feel like many of their views are a bit extreme IMO

But I’m DEFINITELY skeptical and have concerns

First of all we don't need a national uptick for us to show states that are opening up too early. We could look at your state numbers and plan and talk about it as rational people, but your state is a secret. Just for fun, lets look at what we know from Italy, you aren't cool enough to be from Italy, but lets just say you are. Between Feb 20 and March 31, Italy recorded 12,428 deaths to Covid, HOWEVER according to its 5 year average 25,354 more died during that time. That is over twice the number. The March numbers for the US are even worse, we have over 6000 extra deaths in the month of March, and right at 2000 Covid deaths. The US has over 1 Million as of yet unrecovered Covid patients, that is the number you get when you subtract the dead and the number of recovered people from the total cases. That is a lot of contagious people with a disease more contagious then probably anything you have ever been exposed to. A disease that in the United States is showing a fatality rate of about 6%, compared to influenza which has a fatality rate of about 0.1%. Bars notoriously have bad ventilation, hanging out in one with a bunch of people is just asking to catch this and then hope you are not the 1/16 who catches it and pays the ultimate price.
That is quite possibly the most poignant post in this thread thus far, I live in Australia, our rate is just over 1% (fatality) and we are still in lockdown, slowly coming out of it, but it's far from business as usual and won't be for quite a while no doubt.

Wow so sorry to hear that.

In my state it’s basically business as usual and many of us have been enjoying going out again

Hopefully Australia opens soon!

There’s a lot more to the world than just America as far as I am concerned and if they want to go on as normal then I have no issues with it whatsoever as long as they aren’t travelling to my country. Hopefully the nations taking this seriously will be operating again in good time at a minimal threat to life. Perhaps in 6 months time we’ll have the luxury of getting back to normal (as much as we can) and watching these countries that forced normality too early, recording record death tolls instead. I’ll drink to that

Well I think Trump closed our borders and stopped immigration so we should be fine.

He stopped the Chinese way early which was an excellent move

Immigration is not an issue with this virus as it doesn’t take into account visa status, it can spread via those visiting or those returning from other parts of the world. Not sure how stopping the Chinese would help in any way seeing as there are only 13 countries currently with no recorded cases and at least 2 of those are dictatorships who don’t communicate data anyway.

I’m not familiar with the immigration laws in our country but I heard that basically are borders are closed to immigrants.

So then potentially sick people cant come

also, the Chinese started it so it was good stopping them first

Just curious, why so secretive as to what state you're in? It could give everyone in the thread a little more context as to your situation and why you make the decisions you do instead of just "your take" on what's being said and done where you are. Really not understanding why your location is top secret other than everyone would know exactly what was being done in your state and might be able to refute some of what you are saying and doing.

Most of America is open

My governor gets final word.

And, pray remind us again, just who exactly is your governor?

Who is this enlightened soul? Which state - or where - does he (or she) hold this office?

The rest of the world might be surprised to hear that most Americans are completely oblivious to the rest of the world, by choice.

This is not something to be especially proud of, you know.

Well I think Trump closed our borders and stopped immigration so we should be fine.

No, "stopping immigration" is not what will make you "fine".

Testing, tracking, tracing, isolating and treating (in so far as that is possible) are what will work.

I’m not familiar with the immigration laws in our country but I heard that basically are borders are closed to immigrants.

I think that it is more a case of the so-called "sick people" (latest figures from the CDC - May 15, state that those infected number in excess of 1,4 million, whereas the deaths attributed to Covid-19 come to 85,990) are already "here" (in the US) not that they "can't come".

He stopped the Chinese way early which was an excellent move

Back to blaming the Chinese, again, are we?
