Sorta agree to this, but keep in mind that THIS is for security. They don't want some reckless idiot modifying root files nor a virus that somehow succeeds in changing root files. So, I think that what they're doing on the Mac side is for the best.

Regarding iOS and its lack of downgrade, I TOTALLY agree, I HATE the whole system. Jeez, let us do what we want with our devices. I understand a person who doesn't understand anything, they shouldn't downgrade, but a professional who knows what he's doing? HELL NO. It's ****ing slavery, this whole thing. Part of the reason I don't like iOS.
I have to disagree with you in regards to the Mac. Lots of people here mock us PowerPC users but Leopard still allows me to install what I wish and make the UI look more how I want. The ability to do that after Snow Leopard has been diminishing.

Liberty is often exchanged for the promise of security.

Apple has the most powerful marketing system in the world. They didn't get to the top just because the products are good. Consistently clever and influential Apple can sell anything as long as it has their logo.

You might wish to brush up on reading comprehension. I did _not_ say they "cater to" any certain group.

What I _did_ point out is those personality types are most vulnerable to Apples choice of communicating the message. That style has broad appeal. Many other American Corporations use it, just not as effectively as Apple.
Umm, they got to the top precisely because their products and services are good. Peter drucker 101. If I need to brush up on reading comprehension you need to brush up on innovation. And why there are 500 million "weak minded " Apple customers and do some market research on the internet before making some thinly veiled reference to "isheep".

Well, if this is the case, then iOS does way worse than Windows. This is rather annoying.

However, what I guess is: this 10 min notification may come out if you have downloaded the update software and your phone is ready.

Apple don't roll out new updates like this crazy, I think.
It isn't the case though, at least it isn't for me.

Not all jailbreakers jailbreak for piracy.

I pay for my tweaks and apps and all my appstore apps. I jailbreak to customize my device the way I want, not to rip people off.

No, but the thing is a jailbreak is only possible due to a flaw in the security of the device.

Apple don't care about you running apps that aren't in the app store in particular, but they DO care about being able to maintain a secure device. A jailbreak is a problem from that perspective, because it isn't just "friendly" software that can escape the sandboxing and take over the device.

THIS is why apple fixes the security holes jailbreak software uses. Because it's a security problem.

Sure. I've heard this argument before.

And if the jailbreak devs went out and advertised their security exploits you'd be totally right. But they don't. Why? Because that would be a 'security' issue and would be the end of jailbreaking.

It is a fallacy to think that just because a phone is jailbroken the doors have been flung wide open and that anyone can now access the device and do whatever they please with it.

A jailbroken iPhone is no more or less secure than a stock iPhone. It is what the user does with it after that point that makes it vulnerable. If you are a dumbass, install OpenSSH, don't change the passwords, engage in piracy, visit bad websites and allow people you don't know to walk away with your phone - then yeah, your phone is wide open.

But if you don't do any of that then you are no more insecure than stock.

Sorry, this is an old anti-jailbreak argument that bases it's 'truth' on assumptions not in evidence.

That's not what i'm saying.

I'm saying that the flaw used to jail break (especially one that can be performed via say, safari) can be exploited by non-jailbreak software to own your device- whether it is jailbroken or not.

Its OK, you obviously don't understand security; not many people seem to, whereas it's actually a large part of my day job.

Well that's more clear.

And you're right, I don't understand security - because it's not a large part of my job. But then I'm a Graphic Designer and my work is in InDesign and Photoshop all day so what the hell do I know?
