What do you mean by a separate wifi chip? The Apple Watch is already capable of connecting to wifi...

Ummm... as a bridge to connect to the iPhone. It doesn't use a wifi network to send or receive data, so basically without a nearby iPhone all the Apple Watch is capable of is activity monitoring, telling time, and like mobile payments. The second gen is rumored to be able to send and receive data without an iPhone.

A few hours extra battery life on something you'll still probably have to charge daily - well, your definition of significant is... Significantly different to mine.

Because my fiancee won't charge it daily most likely. I'm hoping with her light use of the device, getting it to last 2 days at a time.

Also, the cost of entry is nowhere near $600 and the point of buying it now is to use it now and not in a few months time? If you don't need it now you probably won't need it then. Waiting to spend $600+ on something you don't need is irresponsible AND ridiculous...

Like I had said, I would be purchasing this device for my fiancee as a wedding gift.... which is in 3.5 months.... so... yeah I don't need it now but I would need it by then.

Does she usually sleep with a watch on? If she wouldn't wear it 24/7 the battery is really not an issue, in my experience. I sleep in mine but just charge it a little before I go to bed.

Nope. Completely incorrect.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/apple-watch-cruise-ship.1951161/ as an example of what's possible.

Native apps can send and receive data without an iPhone over a known wifi network already. In the US it seems some cell networks even let you make phone calls over wifi completely independently of the phone already.

Ok you didn't say when it was though. 3 ½ months is May? It definitely wouldn't make sense to buy one now in your case, if only for the warranties and such.

It seems you are correct, it just cannot configure new networks without an iPhone. This is very good to know and gives me something to consider as May approaches. FaceTime camera and GPS (so she could use when she runs without an iPhone) would be super clutch though. Time will tell.

She would fall asleep wearing it or take it off and not charge it probably. She's terrible with her iPhone battery as it is, not charging it for a few days and letting it die (even though she has a car charger and a wall charger at work). Adding ANOTHER device she has to remember to charge at night seems like a burden she doesn't currently have.

Then I'll repeat my earlier recommendation of an automatic mechanical watch (doesn't have to be a Rolex; I've got a $200 Seiko which runs great) or a solar-powered quartz watch.

An automatic "self-winding" watch will run down if not worn for a couple days (some nice-priced new models can do almost four days), but it never needs a battery, only a clean-n-lube "service" every five years or so (if that; some people just run theirs into the ground). Solar watches will stay charged by indoor lighting as long as they're left on the table or on top of the dresser.

Don't think we'll see a new one for a little while. Thinking I might get my SS polished and buffed, in the meantime. Just trying to find a jewellers who might do it.

Rumors that I am hearing are that we will get some new bands and a new Air 3 iPad along with the iPhone 5 mine this March and no new watch till fall. They do say there will be a new watch OS update which will be a let down if you are wanting a new watch.

Those are the most common and recent rumors for March. They did say that would add more colors/material watches in March. Not sure that is other versions of gold or maybe a titanium or what, but that was the only thing you missed in the most recent rumors. They will try to get he most out of version 1 and to sell inventory.

Oh yea, they also mentioned some new Hermes in the rumor. Not sure what that means.

Sounds like good business sense to me.
