I wonder what they are waiting on? Seems like a longer than usually lead time even for BTO. Anyway, I hope to see "mine shipped early" here soon.

I bought a 3.2 quad with 5870, my online status says ships Aug 24 (and I paid for 2-3 day delivery too). Hoping it ships early, I have an eager buyer wanting my 2.8x8.

Not sure if I can justify switching to a 3.33ghz now . . . tempting, but an extra $700 . . . don't know about it.

I'm still deciding which model to buy. The 3.3 seems like the way to go, but not sure for my use if $700+ is worth it. Do you think the Nehalem 3.2 is the way to go? I have a 256gb ssd waiting to install in my new mac pro. I'm guessing the westmere would hold it's value well. I always sell my last mac pro and upgrade to the latest.

We'll have to wait for the benchmarks to see if the hex lives up to the hype. :p

I like your upgrade approach. I'm guessing you get back ~70% of the original purchase (not including the tax) price doing that approach? I'd be curious to hear how you have done in the past. In a round about way you are just renting the machine for 18-24 months. :D

cheers

2-3 day delivery seems the norm for free standard shipping. You might want to change your order if it doesn't delay it.

I'm doing the same except I skipped the 2009 model. Selling my MP at 85% off the new 2010.

Still not sure on the 3.3ghz, I've already ordered my 3.2 and probably won't have time to change my order if I wait for benchmarks. I'm mainly using PS CS5 and LR3, so I don't need the multiple cores, but if the Westmere is 50% faster then it's a good buy.

i ordered my hexcore on monday, 2 hours after they went online. my payment received today and thats what the order page says:

Voraussichtliche Versandzeit (shipment): 25 Aug, 2010
Voraussichtliche Lieferzeit(delivered): 31 Aug, 2010

so i guess they just add 2 weeks on every order, just to be sure. i'l hope it ships a few days earlier, especially a delivery time of 6 days is pretty cruel:p

but thats another drawback EUler have to deal with.

Well, presumably delivery is 7-10 business days... so 2 weeks :p

I myself have to wait to receive my 6-core Mac Pro on the 30th - this wait is evil.

Ordered a 3.2 quad mac pro, no other upgrades. Wanted just the fast clock speed. The second cpu in my previous 2008 model just spend 99% of it's time idling and burning watts.

On the hex 3.33. vs the quad 3.2 subject.
The 3.33 hex is only marginally faster unless you use software that scales over 4 cores. Then you gain up to 60% performance.
If you use software that can benefit from more then 4 cores (i really almost never do) you should seriously consider the upgrade to the hex core. If not your spending the 800$ on a <10% performance improvement and "future proofing". Which is fine of course but 800$ can also buy a lot of other stuff ;)

Anyway

Ship date: 2010/08/25
Delivery date: 2010/09/03

3rd of september feels far away, ah well maybe it will show up earlier unexpectedly. The last one also came almost week ear lier then the estimated delivery time.

This wait is seriously ridiculous. My AppleCare was "delivered" on the 9th, the same day I ordered the MP. Which means they must have already linked it to the serial number of my system with 5870 BTO option. What else could they be waiting for? Are they waiting for more people to order so their first shipment out will have a butt load of systems and not like a half full shipment? What's going on here?!?!

I don't know, but it's pretty clear none of the models, even the non-BTO base models, are shipping. I don't understand why they didn't just make Aug. 23 the first day for ordering.

And people were initially expecting late August anyways before we heard the 9th. First they announce it and don't give an order date. Then they are available for order on the 9th. Now we have to wait another 2 weeks just for it to ship! Then wait a few more for it to be delivered, thats ridiculous.

The new ones are no different than the MP's they were already assembling. A different CPU in the socket, a different video card in the PCI, a few little things, but their entire assembly and test process essentially works unchanged for the new models. All the "new" parts are actually old parts in mid life-cycle and plentiful supply. It can't possibly take more than 20 minutes to assemble any BTO unit, regardless of the options, on an assembly line. The question is how long they burn them in for once assembled. It can't be more than 48 hours.

Conclusion: they start shipping them out by this Friday.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the Mac Pros were never meant to be ready this early in the first place. The "coming soon" charade was rather unlike Apple. I don't think I've ever seen them do that to their Pro line desktop, let alone any Mac Intel computer (correct me if I'm wrong). Their strategy for generating hype has always been targeted at their iDevices.

I'm inclined to believe that they shared this announcement with the iMac release simply to take the heat off their backs from frustrated and potential Mac Pro customers, and also that the lack of an exact release date in August gave them that 30 day leeway to produce these machines and have them ready for shipping.

All these rumors about "end of summer" were exactly right, because thats exactly when we're getting these Mac Pros delivered. Having the opportunity to finally shop and configure our dream Mac Pros on their online store (on a Monday, which is also rather strange), and enter our credit cards was a nice way for all of us to forget being angry at Apple, and I think that's what their goal was. Short term relief.

Now that we realize our shipping dates are way pushed back, it seems that vented frustration is returning once again though :D

You might be right, but there's nothing in these machines that couldn't have been put in six months ago. Looks like they're just serial procrastinators and reality finally caught up with them.

Can you cancel the order up until shipping or only until they put the hold on your CC? If you're ordering a stock model, maybe they'll get them in stores before ship date...

They will probably ship them to stores the same day they ship to people who ordered.

Thats what Ive been told my the rep in the apple store, and that also was the case pretty much with iphone 4 launch. Stores got them a day before the release, while some people already started receiving them.

Apple put no hype at all on this release and still doesn't. It's not on their home page, not on the Mac page, and a small ad on the store, next to the college free iPod and new iMac. So only people interested in Mac Pros and reading Mac forums know about it.

I think every previous Mac Pro release got a place on the home page. This proves the Mac Pro is not a priority for Apple and this update is probably a small evolutionary update before the next major update. I still bought one because I need it. But otherwise, I'd wait another year for the next one.

yeh next years major update might turn out to be just like this one :D

I disagree. Just because it wasn't on their home page doesn't mean Apple no longer cares about the Mac Pro. If theres a reason it's not on the home page, it's because of iPhone 4. They are a consumer company, trying to sell their products to mostly consumers instead of focusing on the professionals. That is why the Mac Pro is not on the home page. And FYI, the new Mac Mini, iMac, Magic Trackpad, and all that never got on the home page.

I ordered a quad 2.8 with Radeon 5870 today. I choose the expedited 2-3 day shipping, and my confirmation e-mail says ships Aug 25 delivers Aug 30.

I canceled my 3.2 order yesterday. I want to see the review/comparison to the 3.3 hex before I make a final decision. My STRONG suspicion is that the hex will only be ~30% faster but out of deference to the folks claiming a potential 50% difference I decided to wait and see. :). Besides, the dang things aren't shipping for another two weeks anyway.

cheers to the early adopters

They just separately shipped the wireless keyboard.

What do you mean? I chose the wireless keyboard BTO option and I don't see a different SKU in my order for the wireless keyboard. They ship inside the box.

Were you able to cancel your order online or did you have to go through the phone? Just for kicks, I clicked the cancel link on my order, and I was told I could no longer cancel my order and that I had to call Apple to do so.

it should be noted though, that I ordered the iPod touch and Photoshop and I have already received both. I wonder if that's just the case...
