I applied the 7.3.1 firmware yesterday, restarted, and it hasn't disconnected since. Was dropping every couple hours before. Crossing my fingers....

Aloha everyone,

I updated the firmware of my router, a Linksys WRT54G, and now I can connect via both ethernet and WiFi. I didn't have a problem, ethernet-wise, until today. BTW, I'm running Mac X 10.5.2 on my MacBook Pro. I also had an issue with wireless on my iMac, but that was also apparently solved with the firmware update. Of course, it's only been a few minutes .....

Thanks, I have just tried that out. It does not work for me, though.

It has been five months since Leopard was released and still there is no fix addressing this issue. It drives me nuts.

I feel for your troubles. I have been having dropped connections since going to Leopard as well but since adding those other DNS servers addresses, my connection has been rock solid for 3 days. My internet has never been so fast. I am extremely happy with the results.

what dns addresses??? how? help!

yeah, sorry... i just found them but i'm not gona add them because i think i'm having a different problem to some people, however i'm also having the same problem as lots of others...

it seems that there are a lot of problems with the wireless, as i say, i have an iMac here which was one of the last Tiger machines to be made and it connects fine. My new MacBook with Leopard SHOULD work!

HOWEVER!!! when i boot up in windows boot camp partition, i get a similar sort of thing, cant connect to the wireless router. obviously the wireless client doesnt say 'connection timeout' however it still doesnt bloody connect!!

GRRRR

That is strange, as for most people the wireless issue is only affiliated with Leopard. I can wirelessly access the Internet using Tiger or Vista without limitations of any kind.

hey dude, thats just the impression i've got. sometimes it connects - like sometimes leopard connects. maybe i'll just take it to the apple store and see if they'll change my airport card...

and btw, on the same router, i've got 2 vista machines, 2 xp machines, 1 tiger machine, a linux machine and an xbox360 all working fine and dandy!!!! drives me up the wall!

Go to System Preferences->Network->Airport->Advanced->DNS->Add 4.2.2.2
Correct but you also want to add 4.2.2.1

As mentioned, steps can be found on page 15 of this thread, post #373. If anybody needs any more help setting this up, PM/Email me and I will try to assist. I know first hand how frustrating this issues is and hope this alleviates the headache for some.

Credit should go to Apple support after a troubleshooting and talking to several technicians. One of which suggested this solution and I have been more than ecstatic with the results.

Again, my set-up: Linksys WRT-54G & iMac 2.8GHz (10.5.2)

I'm curious, what airport firmware version are gonna used here?

Card: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x87)
Firmware: 1.3.4

MBP 15", 2.2, Nov. 07

Just updated my software for airport + the firmware and hey presto! Everything now works, even in the mornings. Hell, it only took them 5 months. I guess that shows that Apple are just as stupid as any other company sometimes, and that my/our blind devotion to them shouldn't be quite so messianic.

and how long has microsoft taken to update all of vistas problems with SP1... what a year?

I added DNS addresses 4.2.2.2 and 4.2.2.1. Not only did it not work, but it started dropping in even faster succession than usual (less than 10 seconds between drops). While the more frequent drops were likely a coincidence, it's not The Final Solution.

this is crazyness! my alu imac works seamlessly on wiresless and i switch between my belkin router (which has the latest firmware i'll add..) and the neighbours linksys as i think they have a faster connection than me.. huhar

My friend had tiger on a macbook about a year old then upgraded to leopard and its fine and my housemate has a macbook which already had leopard on... and his is fine?? all the alu imacs at uni are connected wireless (about 30 of them!) and they run leopard fine

why are some people suffering and some not?! i feel sorry for you guys!

I can say without a doubt (5 days for me) this solution is what worked for me. What brand of router are you using?

Linksys WRT150N.

I downgraded, finally, to Tiger last night anyway. The 10 second drops put me over the edge, and it was either the OS went, or the macbook was going to get angrily thrown on the subway tracks.

dear god, thats quite drastic!!! i'm gona take it to apple next weekend if i get a chance... hopefully they can suggest something that the bloke on the phone couldnt (also, bit annoyed that they say complimentary service yet i still paid £3 for my phone call!!! and i called them twice and got exactly the same response both times!!!)

if all else fails, i've got a copy of Tiger if the worst gets worse...

I am on a very first generation MBP (Tiger "native"), but also got a new MPB (Leopard "native") lately. I have tried the following steps (on both machines) to get rid of this enigmatic phenomena:

1. Clean install of Leopard
2. Router firmware upgrade
3. Router reset to factory settings
3. Change of channels on both router and MBP
4. Adding of the DNS addresses 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2
5. SSID made visible
6. Wireless encryption turned off
6. Install of any software updates available thru software update

I am able to wirelessly connect to the Internet with both MBPs using either Tiger or Vista.

Leopard gives me constant drops. Makes it very nasty to chat with people using instant messengers, as you can imagine.

I have called up Apple support, I have dragged my portables to the closest service provider. Nothing.

I have searched for help documents in Apple's support section online: Nothing.

i totally sympathize for you man!
I just dont understand why its working fine for others and not for some..
I remeber the internet started dropping but i rang my isp and it turned out it was a problem with their service and the type of router i had (belkin fd7005uk or something.. the cable one)
i updated its firmware and all was fine..

still virgin media are **** - like i said i use linksys off my neighbours.. and its fine

My early fix did not work

I had previously posted no drops when setting my airport express basestation to wireless G only instead of B+G. Unfortunately, when trying to download a video (around 1gb) from the iTunes store last night, the connection dropped after days of working and I had to restart my router. This is unbelievable!

DNS solution - it worked for us

We have been having trouble with our network dropping out randomly on us for the last couple of weeks. We have an iMac 2CD 10.5.2 and a trusty PBG4 10.4.11, both connected to an Airport Extreme.

The solution? Add OpenDNS server numbers to your set-up (someone has suggested a similar workaround, which worked for Leopard but not Tiger. This one worked for both).

System Prefs/Network/Aiport/Advanced/DNS

Then click on the + and type
208.67.222.222
Do the same again and type
208.67.220.220

Click OK. then Apply. If it's still dropping turn everything off and on and again. Let us all know if it works.

If you want to know who those numbers relate to, its all available here
