If the apps are free, I will buy the latest Gen iPad Pro now, even though I have a 2018 iPad Pro 13” and a iPad Air 2021.

That's what they do to lure everyone to buy their first Mac. Free OS, free office. $199 on logic and $299 on FCP justify enough to buy the premium hardware to use the software.

Now this 🤦🏻‍♂️

I'm not going to buy either one. I already have the Mac version of Logic, and it works fine for my needs. Plus, I don't think the iPad version is compatible with SINE Player or Kontakt atm so I couldn't really use it anyway.

I don't need FCP because I'm already using Resolve on my Mac and it works just fine. imo, there's no need to have a more complicated workflow if I already have an existing one that works well.

If companies go the one-time-purchase route, then everyone will whine about forced obsolescence when new features are reserved for paid updates and support is cut for old versions after a few years. Premium software is going to cost you one way or another. Developer's don’t work for charity.
Yes, that's the one disadvantage to prepaid software, but for me, I almost think the trade-off isn't worth it, unless the paid feature is something I really need—which it rarely is.

I have had excellent luck running iPad software on my M2 Mac Mini. Running IOS software is a standard feature of the M1/M2 Macs and it works on most IOS apps.

The IOS software "thinks" it is running on a high-end iPad Pro with a large 12" screen and there are keyboard shortcuts to simulate multi-touch gestures, swipes, and so on.

So I wonder if I can get the iOS version to run on my Mac? (I already have both Logic and FCP for Mac, so I don't need the IOS apps on my Mac, but still, I wonder...)

I paid for the Pro Apps pack back in college but I’m still receiving free updates.
But I’m still down to pay a yearly fee for the iPad FCP just to be able to edit wherever I please.

Some do. In fact, the UNIX BSD operating system is free and open-source. Steve Jobs and company simply copied the entire OS, put a graphical interface on it, and called it "macOS", or rather "NextStep" and then later changed it to MacOS.

Quite a lot of software is written by people who don't need to be compensated.

But also there is a lot of commercial software written by for-profit companies. It can be either way.

steve was right.

this is a massive failure by Apple. this is why Apple should ignore customer demands when Apple knows they're wrong. customers just don't know what the f they want.
And by this token, Apple should forgo warranty and safety regulations because they know much better than customer do in every way. Your stance strongly reinforces Apple’s laser focus on profit and disregard of everything else, including customers. Why we even Have settings app and App Store then? Apple pre-configure apps for users to use and dictate how each user uses their devices, visit which website, and so on.

I just hope that Logic will support VST at some point. I have so many third part VST loaded into logic it will be hard to use it without them.
Logic hasn’t supported VST for over 20 years; That’s a Steinberg plugin format. Logic Pro uses AudioUnits plugins, since 2003. AUv3 is now cross-platform though between iOS/iPadOS/macOS, so technically one AU plugin could work on all 3 devices, but it would need to be sold and purchased through the App Store.

Ok cool so he changes his mind on things! Which totally invalidates your point

Jesus. Dudes been dead for more than a decade and people still think we should let him dictate to us how we should use our devices

When did Steve ever announce "NO" to the App Store?

In fact, Steve was only against sideloading (internally) because it compromises security. But once the concept of the review process and Apple curation was on the table, Steve was on board it.

Today Apple is still against sideloading.

Try again?

says the release date is May 24th

23rd 1:00 PM Tuesday, Eastern Time (ET) is
24th 2:00 AM Wednesday, in Tokyo, Japan

So, not before 11 AM Eastern (8 AM Pacific) unless they decide to roll out in those eastward territories early.

Australia’s Apple page also says the 24th.

lol at suggesting how one should interface with a device is somehow laser focused on profit.

There’s no “somehow”. Everything a corporation do is for profit first and foremost. If apple can become a $10T company by removing population somehow, they will do it.

that would involve population valuing the idea of disappearing and therefore spending money on that idea.

you seem to be under the impression that Apple is supposed to be a charity?

no. it's:
1. Apple builds what they think are valuable products
2. People buy

it's obvious you're dead set on a misguided view of Apple. no point in continuing. have a good one.

Still curious about plugin support. Their entire sales pitch for this being a companion to desktop rigs hinges on being able to go back and forth seamlessly, which hinges on third party plugins. Otherwise it’s just a toy.
For now you can only export from the iPad to the Mac and not import back to the iPad. I think that will change over time, though. Apple wanted to get these apps out first.

Pro's buy, not rent.
THIS!!

With subscriptions, the company's just trying to get more money off you instead of giving you a VALUABLE PRODUCT. Look at Premiere Pro! Used to be great, now it's really not, I'd say it's almost terrible compared to a one-time license deal like DaVinci Resolve. Look at Pro Tools—used to be WAY BETTER when you didn't have to pay $100/month for it. The same goes for Logic.

So what are the prices? $5 a month or $300 up front? Which means you'd need to subscribe for 5 years to pay $300 for this? If you're an actual professional, using this to make money, then you're not going to be fussed at $5 a month AFTER 5 years of use. I run the IT department of an app development studio - $5 a month for software is nothing.

Conversely, a subscription model opens this up to people who could not use the software before. Until now, the entry level was a MacBook ($1000) and a one time purchase of $300. You had a $1300 entry level to the software. Now, the entry level is an M1 Air ($600) and $5 a month. The up front cost is now less than half. This opens up the software to those on a budget. It also opens up a huge market of students - many of which already have iPads, and will need creative software.

Honestly, the subscription model seems like a win for everybody.

Curious what the icons will look like. Will we get a bit more realism?
