No, I’ve never had a monitor that receives periodical software updates, as any other iOS device. That’s why I’m asking if anyone thinks it will have compatibility issues once it stops receiving software updates (I guess, by the time iOS stops running on A13 devices).

Other than that, and and the steep price, I would be happy to purchase it, specially now that I know how to use a PS5 with it.
Compatibility issues affects all monitors if their firmware has bug while processing incoming signals. Issues doesn’t just manifest itself suddenly because firmware update stops. A monitor is built to do very specific tasks so it probably doesn’t need constant bug fixing. It just need to adhere to published and maybe private(Apple?) standards and protocols really really well.

I’m just curious you seem concerned about Apple’s display but not others, as all modern monitors nowadays have to have a CPU/microcontroller built in to process video signals. And that means monitor firmware is required. Apple just marketed the hell out of it, so as to create a perception of a premium product.

Well, without a 27", a Mini and a screen it is. But Apple isn't getting my money for a Studio Display. Samsung for me, I think. $1200-ish is a bargain compared to the ASD.

I have been dying for a proper iMac upgrade for years now. My aging 2013 27-inch model needs to be replaced desperately and I have found no suitable replacement. I don't need the best specs, but what I do need is a large display in a single form factor. I would happily give Apple my money if they just offered that option like they used to...

The iPhone 14 Pro Max 4nm chip has more raw performance than your 2013 22nm or my 2012 22nm iMac 27".

I would have been happy with a 5nm M1 32GB 1TB so long as it was in a 27" 5K.

Apple has really messed up the iMac offering.

The 24" is too small for a single screen solutions. 24" work well if you have dual monitors but Apple obviously doesn't sell a matching 24" monitor.

I think there is a great market for a non-pro single monitor desktop solution, like they had before, but in that case people are going want a 27" and the Studio display is going to be well out of the price of most consumers.

Also, to me, Apple's DNA has always been in the design that offers us a beautiful solution.

Since when is it a spec shop like intel or samsung where the display, or processor, has to technically perform the absolute best of any commercial display? Tim and team seem to have developed performance insecurity and need to get back to their core values.

Edit: {I guess their new vision pro is both of these things, but people will still want beautiful desktops not macos tethered to lg displays.}

24" works fine for 2 page work on a single display. Hey people do two page work on a 16" MBP also. It's just your accustom to staring at dual displays, but not everyone has that much desktop space to utilize in every desktop deployment. ;)

A 3 year turnaround would suit me fine tbh, still using my M1 iMac daily and I don't get the impression it's slowing down, still very efficient, even the 8GB ram isn't really affecting my daily use, but the next time I would like to increase my storage, now 512GB, I would like at least double that, or 2TB would be great (I use two external USB C 2TB drives now, one for storage, the other for 'time machine'.

Obviously you can go smaller.

However, the desktop consumer that has a desk which can only fit a 24" but not a 27" desktop seems a pretty narrow market constraint.

A 3 year cycle is fine - kinda. If the iMac refresh timing matches your personal purchasing cycle, great!

But what if you have an older model now & want to upgrade? Or have never owned a Mac & this is your first one?

Although the M1 iMac may be plenty fast, asking those people to buy a years-old product that *is already years closer* to its inevitable macOS support ending, is no good. I said the same thing when Apple sold the 2014 mac mini until 2018 and the 2013 Mac Pro until 2019. If you aren't buying closer to the product's release, you're getting less value.

I use the top model 2018 Intel i7 Mini with a 2TB SSD in it from Apple and 64GB of OWC RAM as a file server. The reality is most NAS may have a fast USB-C connection, but the actual read/write of the hard drives in the Raid structure is the slow point. I have a 10GB internet hub so the data gets to the Mini faster than it can be written to the NAS. The data cache is usually over 50GB in the on board memory and interestingly enough, the 128GB of ram on my MacStudio has an over 100GB cache waiting to send the data to the Mini.

Yesterday, the initial three year Apple Care on the Mini expired and I renewed it on an annual basis going forward. Apple stopped selling this model in January 2023 so it could have five to seven years of service and support from Apple.

To get the maximum memory for cache in the current "M" series Mini, one is looking at the M2 Pro with only 32GB of shared ram and with the 2TB SSD and 10Gb ethernet, my military price is over $2,400 plus tax. I do not have the space now to install a MacStudio M2 Max in the server cabinet.

So, in a couple of years, the MacStudio will have a M3 or M4 with lots more memory and my current MacStudio could become the file server.

I think Apple has boxed themselves in with their crappy display scaling and as a result is that they are very constrained on panel options. They might not be changing the iMac because they can't get an replacement for the current 24" display or find an economical one at 27".

A 4K 27" monitor or even a 4K 32" monitor have indistinguishable pixels at less than 2ft so the issue is very much not that Apple actually needs 4.5K or 5K displays to look sharp, they just need to fix the software issues with how MacOS handles font rendering and scaling.

I've held off getting an Apple silicon Mac waiting for the "right" iMac to get released, but it looks like I'm going to have to continue waiting for a bit longer.

I’m not sure I agree that 5k at 27” is unnecessary.

The official Apple amazon page has no iMac 24s in stock https://www.amazon.com/2021-Apple-24-inch-8‑core-256GB/dp/B0932HVSYM

Apple is known to off load inventory through Amazon for discounted prices, looks like they are not restocking iMac 24s at the moment...

8/7 CPU-GPU sold out
8/8 CPU-GPU Sold out in everything but green

Only a few configs left sold by 3rd parties...

Imagine... surprise 2023 iMac 24" 4.5K M2 & M2 Pro and 30" 5.5K M2 Pro & M2 Max.

I'd be more than willing to pay up to $3k for a 30" 5.5K.

The bigger iMac IS the: Mini or Studio and an Apple Studio Display

I think the question should be: what's the point of releasing a larger iMac today?
The all on one is a really handy format for certain locations, such as classrooms. The lighter weight (easier to pull over) modern version with no Ethernet at base level kinda wrecked school use, though, if we are honest...

Why would that be a problem with WiFI access points in the ceiling above a classroom? The physical carrying the 24", not having sharper edges vs the previous 27" series is what I like to see in a future larger 27"+ AS iMac. I even said previously that you could have a 29.5" display fit within the older 27" iMac form factor if Apple wanted to go bigger.

In your fantasy world where schools have great wifi, it wouldn't be a problem if there was no Ethernet...

Sadly....

Anyway, regarding the weight... what kind of adult man couldn't lift the old one? The new one is just a bit too easy for a child to clatter into and send flying onto the floor.

For what it's worth, I'm from a family of teachers.

One nice thing about the new iMacs... they didn't get rid of the handy post-it-note-chin.

Downsides obviously include the RAM and SSD no longer being upgradable in Apple's bid to create e-waste, ahem, bid to add a lot of memory bandwidth that benefits a questionable number of users, and the childish and distracting white bezel.

A grown up 27" iMac in a smaller body would be nice, despite the fact it'll be e-waste sooner than it need be.
