I don't know, but it will be built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence. With features that are light years ahead of anything that has come before. Features that won't actually arrive until M7. M5 Pro will be the most pro chip we've ever made. You're going to love it.
I’m so tired of things being built from the ground up. Let me know when we finally get a chip built from the sky down.

Remember back when they didn't release a G5 PowerBook ? Pepperidge Farm remembers. 5 is a cool number, this macbook M5 is bound to be the best Apple have ever made.

Sure, right after the G5 PowerBook.
If SJ were still around I could totally see him onstage intro’ing their newest pro laptop saying, “and we’re calling it the PowerBook G5” *crowd laughs* “no, no, it’s the new M5 MacBook Pro!”

Unfortunately TC has the charisma of an old pair of slippers so we’ll never get a wink and a nod like that.

The annual hardware refresh gravy train, done for year on year profit for people who always upgrade even if they don’t need to. It’s the same with the iPhone.

As someone has already pointed out, the actual gains are only really useful to a very small number of users.
I don't think they are expecting anyone to upgrade yearly. But it's a LOT better than the old days were you would wait 3 years for a small cpu bump. It gives you more buying confidence knowing that you're not buying something thats more than a year out of date when it does come time to buy. You're no longer waiting a year to buy because the current model being sold hasn't changed in years

I wonder if they'll mess up with the core counts again like with M3, or they've finally settled to something sensible with M4, and stopped cutting back on certain specs like they did with M2 and M3.

You mean binning the chips? The thing that everyone does? Yes, they’ll still do that.

The biggest advancement will come, when Apple will bring the MBP with 2nm chip and oled display. So this period with M5 will not be so interesting. And I hope that they will integrate finally SSDs with PCIe 5.0 Speed. This is really overdue, because you can buy them since 2 years and Apple is still selling the old ones with high prices.....

Apple produced too good a product in the first round with M1 Pro + Max chips. Guess I'll be waiting until Fall 2026 to upgrade that guy, making it a five year cycle.

Honestly, who cares they just released the M4s which are highly competent machines. Let’s move onto something new and relevant.
I think it’s pretty relevant. They are the 2nd most popular Mac behind the Air. Site is based around Mac rumors. M4s are nearly 6 months old which could be half way through their lifecycle. Maybe not exciting, sure. Very relevant though.

M1s are still pretty fantastic. 5+ years is probably the normal life cycle for many buyers. I will say the M4 Air does feel noticeably quicker than my M1 Pro for most tasks, but you get pretty used to the new baseline after a week or so, just like any other tech product.

Remember waiting years for maybe a 5% increase in performance. Now yearly you’re seeing 15% increases in performance.

At this point it doesn’t really matter what machine you get—you’re covered.

I do not mind the notch a lot, but I will keep my 16" M3 Pro until the notch is gone.
I just got a M2 15" MacBook Air. The notch was absolutely intolerable. I set the resolution to 1710 x 1068, just slightly below the default 1710 x 1107, and the notch is GONE.

All Apple laptops used to have an anti-glare display. I wish nano-texturing came standard on all laptops. I'm thinking about trying out some cheap anti-glare display covers to see if they're any good.

I'm still using 2012 MBP with 8GB of RAM and 128GB SSD. I hate the limited RAM and storage, but it still works. The display gets a green tint if I don't use it for a week, though, but it returns to normal after maybe 30-60 minutes of usage.
Why would you not upgrade that?

My 2012 MBP that I still use pretty regularly has 16GB RAM and 4TB SSD.

I do wish the newer machines still had antiglare screens. Steve Jobs was an idiot, shiny glass is worse.

If you weren't around in the last few years, just look up the entries about M1->M4 on wikipedia, thanks. No, it's not binning that everyone does, but repositioning product segments (Pro, Max), that almost nobody does on a yearly basis.

Yep. Apple has never been able to do adequate thermal management, why would they start now?
They couldn't with the IntelBooks, but the current MBPs do pretty well even with the M# Max. If you look at the high performance Intel Windows laptops they run hot and have crappy battery life when pushed hard.

No one could thermally manage the M# Ultra in a laptop like the MBP. You'd need something like this:

My daughter just bought the 15" M4 Air and it's great, but she's bummed she can't have the nano-texture. Also would really like the pro motion 120Hz. Otherwise she thinks the system is perfect for what she does. I get that Apple is trying to reserve some features for the MacBook Pro, but I'm not so sure that using the Pro form factor to gatekeep certain things is that great of a concept. My daughter considered the 14" MBP, but the 15" is a better overall size fit for her. Anyway, just ruminating on this... There is value in the thinner Air form factor where people would rather pay to upgrade to the better display vs. having the thicker/heavier MBP.
You do realise the MacBook Pro 14" is only 1.6 ounces heavier than the 15" Air?
