Apple regularly refreshes the MacBook Pro models, and a new version that uses M5 series chips is in the works. Apple just finished refreshing most of the Mac lineup with M4 chips, and now it's time for the M5. Rumors suggest that we could see the first M5 MacBook Pro models this fall.

Design

There have been no rumors of a design update for the M5 MacBook Pro models that are coming this fall, so we are expecting the same look as the current models. There might be minor updates, but most of the changes will be internal.

Apple probably won't change the design of the MacBook Pro until it transitions to OLED display technology, and that's not rumored to happen until 2026 at the earliest.

M5 Chips

The MacBook Pro will use M5, M5 Pro, and M5 Max chips. The entry-level 14-inch model will be available with the M5, while the higher-end 14-inch models and 16-inch models will have the more advanced M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

Apple's M5 chips will be manufactured on a 3-nanometer process like the M4 chips, but Apple is planning for new technology that will give the M5 lineup an edge over M4 chips.

Apple manufacturing partner TSMC plans to use a more advanced (System on Integrated Chip) SoIC packaging technology for the M5 chips. SoIC technology allows for the stacking of chips in a 3D structure, for better electrical performance and thermal management. TSMC has developed a next-generation hybrid SoIC package that uses thermoplastic carbon fiber composite molding technology.

The chips are expected to be faster, more power efficient, and better at handling AI and machine learning tasks. Apple also plans to use M5-series chips for the AI servers that power its Apple Intelligence and machine learning features.

Future MacBook Pro Rumors

Apple is working on an OLED MacBook Pro, and that's really the model to wait for. It's supposed to be coming as soon as 2026, and it will bring notable improvements in display quality. OLED offers improved brightness, better contrast with deeper blacks, and improved power efficiency.

The 2026 MacBook Pro could also have a 5G modem, a first for the Mac, and it's expected to have Apple's next-generation 2-nanometer chip.

Release Date

Mass production on M5 chips is expected to start in 2025, so we could see the first Macs with M5 technology somewhere around the fall of 2025. Last year, Apple refreshed the MacBook Pro models in October 2024, so October 2025 would make sense.

Aside from a slightly faster chip, there isn't very much else new coming, by the sound of it.
Me I'm happy with my M3 and unless there are some significant design changes (and I don't mean thinner with lest ports), I'm unlikely to upgrade

It would have been nice to wait for the M5 but the 2012 MBP was on its way out and I couldn't wait any longer. Not regretting my M4 Max purchase at all, it's a wonderful machine and does everything I need it to do.
The M5 won't be that much faster and hardware wise, it will be the same

Even though M4 Pro and M5 Pro MacBooks are much faster than my M1 Pro 14in MBP, I still am very content with the performance of my laptop. Although recently ive been getting into more serious coding and ive noticed that my 16gb of ram is often hitting yellow pressure with 7gb of swap yesterday. So that base model 24gb ram 14in MBP is looking very tempting.

However, I think I can live till when Apple redesigns the MacBook Pro in 2026, hopefully at the same price with OLED.
Oled will definitely not be at the same price, it may not even com in 2026, that's when the new 2nm chip is planned for, so maybe Oled after that in 2027?

At this rate, they'll be "streaming" new releases 24/7, so if you don't sell your current model the nanosecond after you get it, to buy the latest version (which will be at least 5 models further along), you'll lose 99% of it's value and it will be worth dirt, even on eBay. 🤣 I'm now 3 CPU version behind (M1 vs. M4) and I still see no reason to buy one. Particularly because of the power button placement and the ports in the front. Ugh.

I don't know, but it will be built from the ground up for Apple Intelligence. With features that are light years ahead of anything that has come before. Features that won't actually arrive until M7. M5 Pro will be the most pro chip we've ever made. You're going to love it.
But it will still come with WiFi 6E.

I really don’t think Apple honestly expects many people to upgrade from M1, M2 or M3 to upgrade to M4, M5 or M6 just for the sake of keeping up with the latest. I think it’s more about undermining the competition and staying ahead of them.

When i bought M1 Max i thought i would replace it when M5 comes out. But frankly speaking, this M1 Max just chews anything i throw at it. Just wondering what would be the benefit. I guess for me the GPU would be the only thing.

Same, I got lucky that my work laptop upgrade coincided with the M1 Max release and I was able to get one. I'm up for a new machine next year and not sure I have any reason to upgrade unless it has a better screen (product designer)

I feel like we are all hamsters on a spinning wheel

When X comes out, we immediately need to start talking about when Y will come out and even what is rumored for Z

Over and over and over and over, with zero regard for if anyone even needs Y or Z ... of needed to upgrade to X for that matter

Maybe September with an iPad Pro. Apple releases in August releases are pretty sparse. I think M5s in Pro line October-November. Hard to image much excitement around these releases though.
The base M5 doesn’t seem to be very exciting, but the higher end versions could be significant.

It does seem like we’re going to be waiting until the M6 for something revolutionary, however, the M5 will be very significant for someone coming from an M1 machine, possibly M2 as well.

Then don’t rely on what they tell you, but use your own judgement.

There are always updates and upgrades coming down the line. No way you can afford to stay ahead of it. So if you need something then get it and don’t worry about whats coming next.

Since M1 these devices are now so good it doesn’t really matter which one you have unless you care about bragging rights. An M1 would have satisfied my needs, but I was able to wait because I wasn’t desperate for a new machine. Now I have an M3 which I got some months before M4 was released (which I knew was coming eventually). I don’t feel cheated because my M3 is more than sufficient for my needs. M4 or M5 wouldn’t really do much more for what I’m doing.

I bought an iPhone 14 shortly before the 15 was released because the upgrades of the 15 were incremental and didn’t justify paying more for what I needed from a phone. I’m still using Lightning instead of USB-C—Horrors! I should be ashamed and embarrassed! 😆

If you’re always chasing the next thing you’ll never catch it.
Thats exactly what I'm saying I do. I've said multiple times they've proven to have zero track record on being right, so I'm unsure what our disagreement is?

I really do very little video work. Little enough that I remember how arduous it was on my for the time top end windows PC.

On my i9 MacBook the experience was MUCH better. Still took a long time, but not the glacierly slow process with weird artifacts and skips that were common on the PC.

Fast forward I just did some last month. My M3 Max MacBook made it effortlessly. I could do multiple streams at once and watch Activity Manager calmly and orderly go to 800% CPU utilization.

I even got the fan to come on - a first! The i9 sounded like an F-18 sitting in a catapult when I was browsing the internet. This was the first time I have proven the fans in the M3 were even installed properly.

Apple’s problem at this point is going to be convincing existing customers to upgrade. It seems even M3 Max is everything a single user computer will ever need for the foreseeable future.

And that absolutely includes all the AI vaporware. Why? Because AI is going to be enormously constrained by

1. The monetization model - like all Silicon Valley unicorns sooner or later it has to generate a profit.

2. The problem domain. For all the hype the use cases are not as unlimited as the glossies imply.

3. The base programming. While what AI can generate is impressive it is also limited in scope. To fulfill the stated goals it needs to be more than the best internet aggregator ever imagined. But all the models seem to be exactly that. This while impressive it may ultimately be an evolutionary dead end.

4. Accuracy. AI needs to stop spouting nonsense and Swearing it is fact. This is undoubtedly an effect of the 1950s principle of GIGO - garbage in garbage out: an early admonishment to validate your inputs. But by training the model on the internet and then compounding the problem by putting political filters on the output AI becomes at best unreliable and at worst a source of disinformation on every subject that could be politicized.

5. Storage. Back to the MacBook example the aspirational on device processing cannot extend to something that requires 12TB of source data. At least not at the current order of magnitude price point.

6. Bandwidth. The antonym of storage is bandwidth. Many people have said self driving cars will be easy once every car has 5G internet and the equivalent of TCAS II. Sure. Sure it will. I for one am not eager to bet my life on network latency and 6GHz signal propagation through that new Amazon distribution center they just built next to the interstate. And once again circling back to the MacBook, 1Gb fiber service turns into 400Mb on the best WiFi available. Put a few users on it that are using for core functions where “the cloud” becomes an extension of the OS, and everything grinds to a halt.

All these things CAN be fixed. Will they be fixed before the consumer honeymoon is over and the current crop of AI vendors file for bankruptcy? The answer is almost a mathematical certainty of No.

The MacBook Pro doesn't need anything to be built-up from any point other than the SoC data throughput and more efficient vents that continue to blow out the back and sides :D Even then its perfect!

Its Apple Intelligence and their entire leadership in that division needs to be built from the ground up. Moving Mike Rockwell, the Vision Pro lead to Ai ... to save John Giannandrea's arse is a ridiculous move! HIM Alone should face false adertisement regulations lol.
