I love my iPhone XS but there’s no denying competitors cameras in low light situations are better. Here’s an example of the Huawei P30 Pro low light.

I really hope Apple ups its game in the camera department. There is absolutely no reason iPhone shouldn’t be the best smartphone camera, period.

I just want the option for an iPhone that is high end in everything except the camera...

At best, I think Apple will catch up to Samsung S10 in terms of photo quality this year. The P30 Pro is probably two years ahead of what Apple has in mind.

I think Apple has been spreading themselves thin by investing in Animojis, AR, and FaceTime 32.

I’m waiting for Samsung to beat and trounce the iPhone in terms of photo quality. At least one Youtube reviews pitting the galaxy against the max have top rated the max. That said this is a pissing contest and as is usually the case with smartphone cameras the pics have to be good enough.

If it hasn’t been set already, the biggest weak point for the iPhone is low light. Easily without contest, Apple needs to improve that specific area with the iPhone quality. I’m not saying they need to implement something like Google Night Sight, but I do hope the ‘triple lens camera’ can offer some type of improvement with low light.

and the next iPhone camera will be the best, then next Pixel will be the best, then the next Galaxy will be the best, then the next iPhone will be the best ...etc., etc. You can get on the merry-go-round any time you want, but nobody stays on top for long
No this isn’t just the P30 is a newer phone. Apple is behind in low light photography. Even overall it’s hard to make the case iPhone has the best camera. Considering Apple controls the entire stack, iPhone should be blowing away the competition when it comes to photography.

Isn’t Google’s Night Sight mostly software?

I think Huwawei pull ahead in other areas like having a wide angle lens and a 5 x optical zoom on the telephoto lens. I think it will take Apple a few years to get to where Huwawei are now in terms of camera because Huwawei are quite far ahead. Obviously there is more to a phone than a camera.

iPhone hasn’t had the BEST camera for several years now. The pixel 2 camera was better than the max and xs camera this year, even though it was much older.

You’re totally right, it was incredibly foolish for Apple’s camera department to be assigned to FaceTime. /s

Rival? Are you at war or something... This is ridiculous.
People and their paranoia these days... I can't settle for a subpar, more expensive consumer product, because you see, someone is "spying" on me.

I have the Huawei P30 myself, truly love this device. Using it aside with my iPhone.
Battery life is out of this world, easily 2 full days of (heavy) usage and still end with about 10/15%.

The zooming in options of these Leica cameras is so much fun to play with.
Compared to the Huawei P30 series, the cameras of the Xs and Xs Max feel like a camera from 1989.

I allready have text messages from Xi Jinping saying he likes my photos and he als would like to say hello to all of the macrumors members here.

That’s great, tell Pooh bear I’m a big fan. Grew up watching him. (For those who don’t know Xi has been likened to Pooh bear. Chinese media actually censors images of Pooh. Yes this is true) lol.

Have you owned/used a Huawei phone before?
I have the Honor View 10 (Honor is Huawei's sub brand). The night mode is surely interesting and fascinating, but you have to hold your phone still for 5 to 10 seconds. The normal "AI" mode is no better/worse than what an iPhone with smart HDR can deliver.

Let's be honest, I doubt Apple somehow "missed" this. Heck, Apple managed to do what Google did, ie. bokeh via software, on the iPhone XR. What I think is Apple errs on the usability side. Apple's goal is to have a simply point-n-shoot experience. Case in point, their smart HDR. We used to need to hold our phones a few seconds for HDR, but Apple worked so hard on their ISP to the point that it's just automatic with a single shutter press with the A12. And I have a feeling it's the same case with low-light photography. Maybe Apple thinks that having the user to hold their phones for 5 to 10 seconds is not worth it just to get low-light shot, and who knows, maybe with the next iteration of the Ax chip, Apple might be able to produce something close but without the wait by overdriving the ISP.

In short, I wouldn't discount Apple on anything. Another example was panorama mode. Most phones just suck at it, but Apple pretty much perfected theirs.

And for Huawei fans, you should look at the number of analytics EMUI is trying to get from your phone. Even Xiaomi's MIUI becomes less intrusive compared to EMUI.

90% of the job of a VP like Craig Federighi is to ensure resources are available and assigned according to strategic priorities.

According to Apple, the top three iOS 12 features were:
  1. Performance
  2. FaceTime
  3. Messages
Camera was #9.

Either Craig didn't see camera features as important, or the software engineering team is poor at executing.

Well they did improve the camera's significantly with the XS/XS max just not enough to reach the level of huwawei. Huwawei and Google are in a league of their own with their cameras though.

Not keen on the Huwawei UI and I'd heard about the aggressive power management on their phones. Then I saw Mr Mobiles review of the p30 pro. He was saying that he's had the podcast app close during the middle of a podcast due to the power management.

The options and features on these android phones are getting so hard to ignore though. I'm going to get an android phone in a few weeks, probably not a current flagship maybe the S9/note 9 and then use it with my xs max until the next round of flagship phones are released in the fall and decide which branch (ios/android) I want to upgrade. I will still keep whichever one I'm not upgrading.
