what difference does it make if you get a redemption code to upgrade or if it comes bundled with it?

You can do a clean install anyway.

IIRC, SSD's can only be written to so many times. Writing Lion, wiping, and rewriting with ML may degrade the life/performance of the SSD to some degree.

But I am not an expert. please correct me if I am wrong. I am also waiting for preinstalled ML.

What is the point in waiting for preinstalled ML?
Instead of getting a rMBP now and spending 15 minutes on installing the new OS, people are willing to wait few days in order "not to waste time on installing the new system". I do not understand the logic...

No logic guy, just an OCD Apple geek thing. When I spend that kinda money, I want to dictate things like that. So if a person is willing to wait a week Vs. just getting the update, let em. It’s their money, let em do what they want ya know. Logic plays no part in this rational.

SSD's actually have a longer life expectancy than a standard HD so worrying about wiping/writing once is ridiculous

The last Apple rep I spoke with said that ALL BTO computers will ship with Mountain L

ME: "Are you aware if I purchase a built-to-order macbook pro with retina display will it ship with Mountain Lion?"

APPLE REP: "Yes, absolutely!"

ME: "Will I need to upgrade from Lion?"

APPLE REP: "No. A built to oder Mac will come with Mac OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)"

Trim and garbage collection should help keep the SSD performing to its best throughout it's life ;)

SSDs are far more durable than people realize. SSDs constantly rotate the space they actually use, and take like 10,000 write cycles before they have even a 50% chance of becoming unwritable.

For all intents and purposes, it really won't matter for an EXCEEDINGLY long time.

Don't let me shatter your hopes, but Apple's track record of knowledgable non-repair representatives isn't exactly the greatest.

EDIT: And for what it matters, this is a big deal for me. I want to break my MBP out of its sealed box, and start plugging away at Lion hassle-free.

I'll probably wait a few days before I order a BTO 15". When you add it to the shopping cart it says software that is still preinstalled with OS X Lion.

I just don't want to go through all the hassle of waiting for a code and upgrading. My internet is very slow so it would take a long time to download and If I decide to sell the computer, I could only sell it with Lion.

When you add a rMBP to your cart in the Apple Store it now shows that it's shipping with "OS X Mountain Lion" instead of "OS X Lion"! Must have changed in the last hour or two.

Don't be play'n around guy!

If you are right ill be :D

Update: Hells Yeahs!! You are right, great news!

Having just received a promotional email from apple, I went straight to the online store and found it is now shipping with mountain lion too!

I'll place my order after work tomorrow. Exciting :)

I'm not a MBP guy, but I'm about to buy a MBA. I'm OCD :apple: like the rest of you and I desperately want to know if, or when, these BTO macs will come with Mountain Lion preinstalled. My credit card has been waiting for 7 years. I'm on a freakin' Powerbook right now.

Well I just chatted with an Apple.com store rep, here is what he said:

Right, there wouldn't be a set date exactly to say when the inventory shifts to Mountain Lion. As of right now, we're told that the Macs will be shipping with Mountain Lion.

I'm still skeptical...Can someone who has a definitive answer PLEASE give us an update when they receive their order?? Thanks!!!

Its not that big of a deal for me. Being a reformed PC user (this will be my first mac) I am use to getting a PC and then having to an update and do a bunch of tweaks before I start using it.

I wanted ML pre installed so I could do what the commercial says

Thats the only reason. I am just tired of the
Turn on the PC, check for updates, uninstall the darn 30 day trial software, uninstall the crapware, Install a better browser, install Anti Virus, Install Anti-malwre etc

There will be some configuring sure, I just wanted to minimize it for my first Mac
:)

Well, there's no crapware installed (well, I suppose you could call the game center "crapware" :p), but there is still a lot of configuring and installing: a better browser :D, dropbox, evernote, gfxCardStatus, 1password, etc., etc..

yeah but that is the fun stuff at least. :)

Thats not the "reboot 12 times to get all the security updates"
or wait 20-40 minutes for the few gigabyte OS update

and all my programs I have stored on my server so there will be very little download time for those.

 I thought you said this is your first mac. Have you been pre-downloading mac software?

I have been planing on getting a Mac for the past 6-7 months and have been getting all the programs ready since then. My wife also has a Macbook (2009) and through her I have gotten a few more of the programs. I wasn't sure if I was getting a MBP or a MBA, so I made sure the bulk of my Programs were non CD/DVD based. I am only missing 1 or 2 so I will be Running Windows through Parallels  until I can 100% make the brake (but I will keep Parallels in case there is a windows only program I want to play with)

I like to be Prepared, but I am really excited for the switch
