So I wonder when they will ship with ML. I see BB has all macbooks, even Retina "on sale" my guess is that they're trying to move all w/o ML. So basically models are being sold at a discount at their competitors. Doesn't make me anxious to order one with Lion at full price...

You get a free upgrade....they're not going to discount it because of that. BB has had them on sale since the week they came out.

This may be a naive question, but does it matter whether or not ML is pre-installed or you have to get it from the app store in terms of the actual performance of the computer (not the convenience of turning it on and having ML ready to go)? I've also seen mentioned various ways of installing ML using flash drives and the like - what's the advantage of that vs simply installing from the app store? Thanks.

Installing from an external drive allows you to do a clean install - which in theory could allow for better performance if you had a lot of crap on the previous install. In the old days (especially with Windows) it made quite a difference. I don't think there's a real difference these days, especially if upgrading from a relatively fresh install.

The only advantage I could think of for a system that *came* with Mountain Lion would be that the recovery partition won't ask you for your app store password.

So....I have to be the guy who asks......

When will MBPs come with ML preinstalled!?!!

(Try to reframe from ripping on me with the oh so trusty “Who cares, it’s a free and easy upgrade”)

Got my rMBP today, and it has Lion, not ML. (Woohoo! I actually want this, as this means that I can create a USB ML install drive, which you can't do if ML comes preinstalled.)

Just "spoke" via online chat with an Apple rep. Asked if rMBP would now come preinstalled with ML. He indicated they still had inventory of the basic models with Lion, but if one ordered a custom model with more power/RAM, it would be built with ML.

Take it for what it's worth. I'll be building custom, so think I'll pull the trigger.

When I ordered my BTO via phone today they stated it will come with ML installed. 2.6/16/256

Based on the Order Status thread it looks like a few new RMBP are comming with ML pre-installed :). Ordered mine last Saturday - can't wait!

I ordered a custom 2.6/16/256 on the 1st, it will deliver today. I'll give a status update about which is installed.

Having Lion pre-installed is better. I was happy that my rMBP came with Lion when I bought it on ML release day.

1. You get a copy of it in the App Store. Then you can download the disk images (and also 10.8.x slipstreams of the OS) and burn it on a USB image. Saves me from downloading/internet access every time if I ever need to do a reinstall.

2. Not part of the license, but I can also upgrade my other Macs that I own (don't see why not, I can't purchase it again on my user account and I'm the sole user).

3. I wouldn't call iLife "crapware" it's very good, however I don't use iPhoto, I use Aperture. I don't use iMovie, I use Final Cut. So I can get a clean install of OS X without iLife from the very beginning. :D

Stop asking this question, all Apple rMBPs haver ML preinstalled now! Kill the thread.

What is your statement based on? I called Apple on August 1st and they told me ML probably would not come preinstalled if I ordered that day. And many others have also stated based on past releases it take a few weeks for the new OS to come pre-installed.

The below is on the Order Status thread today.

Well just received my MacBook Pro! UPS handled it to me almost a 'day' earlier as the scheduled delivery time was today after 7pm and it came just a few minutes ago (11am). Everything was ok but the machine didn't came with Mountain Lion so I'm currently upgrading it, something that is gonna take a while...

Good luck to all of you still waiting for your delivery to arrive :)

Since Apple changed it on Apple.com, it was after Aug. 1st . All MBP have ML on it now.
