In an online chat with a sales rep yesterday, they told me "historically, it takes 2-3 weeks before new machines start arriving with a new OS preinstalled, and with new boxes, etc."

Is it? OS X 10.7 is Lion - OS X 10.8 is ML - I thought it said ML in my shopping cart yesterday... strange

It definitely said OS X Mountain Lion in the cart yesterday. I just went back and looked again (the MBP was still in the cart) and it indeed just says OS X now.

I'd wait if you're adamant about receiving a machine with ML.

Come on Apple, stop mess'n around!

Mine shipped today. If it has lion what are the steps to getting my free copy of ML?

Like I have always said not a big deal. I'd have liked it there but I couldn't wait any longer I already have been waiting 6 months to order my Mac. I orginal was going to get the iMac but with no update the MacBook pro became my next choice ( which I am super happy I decided on)

Did anybody notice that on the Apple.com/store webpage when you select the Macbook Pro, it says "Included Software: Mountain Lion" now? Was it like this before? Does it mean that every Mac comes with ML because they still have that "up-to-date" information meaning some could have it, some not.

It has been like that since its release. Put it in ur cart, then look at it, clearly says OS X. It use to say Lion and for one day it said Moutain Lion, but now it seams unclear.

Well I took a leap of faith and ordered!!! This is the first Mac I've purchased since my Powerbook in 2005. Worst case, it comes with Lion and I go to the Apple Store to do Personal Set Up. I need to buy a case anyway. :D

I'm so excited....7 years in the making!!!!!!!!!!

I just spoke with Apple Sales Support and she told me that a Retina Macbook Pro ordered today would probably not come with ML pre-installed (but it might since it takes 1-2 weeks to ship). She re-iterated that I would be eligible for a free upgrade.

I have to say I installed ML on my Mac-mini and it was very painless and Safari seems smoking fast after the upgrade.

Apple will have been installing ML on all new builds from at least the 25th, but how long it takes to go from the production line to being prepared for shipment I don't know. I imagine if your ordered an rMBP today you'd definitely get it with ML preinstalled (same can't be said for Air's, Classics etc which are all stockpiled stock with Lion that'll take some weeks to deplete)

I originally thought that, but I was kinda thinking loading the software was one of the last steps. But then I heard the drives come pre-loaded into the assembly process - so I guess it depends on how long it takes these drives to get through the supply chain. Not sure where the drives are manufactured, but even if they print the new drives once the GM is available it might take a little while. But I am only speculating - not really sure how this really works.

Spoke to an Apple customer service representative today about my order (ordered it last night) cause I was curious about this same exact thing. The person said since my computer is custom built, I will likely have Mountain Lion preinstalled. She seemed to suggest that if someone were to order a base model right now, there is a good chance it'll come with Lion til the current stock is cleaned out.

Anyone know how I would go about creating a bootable disc image of ML on a usb drive if my computer comes preinstalled with it?

If it's preinstalled, you probably have to buy something like carbon copy cloner. Alternatively, if a recovery disk is good enough:If it's not preinstalled, you can do this BEFORE upgrading:

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is the difference between recovery disk and say what I did to make a Lion backup using the Lion install package from the App Store, a flash drive and the app Lion Diskmaker?

You asked about a bootable image of ML. A recovery disk is not a bootable copy of ML -- it's a bootable system that can be used to download and reinstall ML. You can also do basic system tasks such as reformatting the disk, which erases all of your data.

The Lion Diskmaker app creates a bootable system that allows you to reinstall ML without having to download (everything's on the USB drive or DVD).
